Last Weekend's Final Financial Numbers.

One week later, all the numbers are finally in. Here’s the financial stats regarding last weekend’s DFOK Fundraising Disc Golf Tournament. $295 raised in player entry fees (59 players x $5 per player = $295) $125 raised in optional “dot dollar” mulligan donations (23 players X $5 per player = $115) $ 20 donation in kind from a player. -------- $430 dollars raised by the DFOK Fundraising Disc Golf Tournament! One week later, all the numbers are finally in.

Here’s the financial stats regarding last weekend’s DFOK Fundraising Disc Golf Tournament.
$295 raised in player entry fees (59 players x $5 per player = $295)
$125 raised in optional “dot dollar” mulligan donations (23 players X $5 per player = $115)
$ 20 donation in kind from a player.

$430 dollars raised by the DFOK Fundraising Disc Golf Tournament!

Also newsworthy on Saturday was the presentation of the funds generated by this winter’s DFOK Glow League. Each player at this winter's glow league was encouraged to donate $1, per round attended, to further disc golf in the area. The result of these donations totaled $61.

When all added up, the weekend resulted in raising a total of $491 for the Fairmont Park Disc Golf Expansion Project!

Thank you to all who participated in last weekend’s DFOK tournament, and this winter’s DFOK glow league!

Serve Thunderstorm WARNING Reminder

Here we are again with a potential of thunderstorms in the forecast for tonight.

Remember, the usual Warner Wednesday league activities will be CANCELED if the following occurs
1. National Weather Service issues a Severe Weather WARNING.
2. Notable lightning in the area.
Both of these apply if they occur just prior to the normal start to, or during, the league round.

However, if it's only rain the league events will be played as scheduled.

This week the Fairmont Park Disc Golf Course Expansion Project took a very important step forward. The Riley County Commission officially approved us to begin our Sponsorship Fundraising Campaign for the project.

Here are the basics of our Sponsorship Fundraising Campaign.
Riley County Parks and the Disc Fanatics of Kansas are both going to be purchasing equipment for the expansion project. Our club is responsible for raising $4500 in order to cover what we’ve agreed to fund.

In order to raise the $4500 amount, we are offering Fairway Sponsorship opportunities.
Depending on the sponsorship amount, contributors may be recognized on our new main course sign and on a tee sign for one fairway. The fee to sponsor a “full fairway” is $500, the fee to sponsor a “half fairway” is $250. Recognition of other sponsorship levels will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Checks will be made payable to “Riley County Parks”, with "Disc Golf" on the memo line. Sponsorship opportunities are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Organizations and individuals can be Fairway Sponsors. It is our responsibility to find them. If you identify an organization or individual who is seriously interested in being a Fairway Sponsor, please contact me (Rick Petrie) ASAP, so I can get a copy of our project Information Sheet & the Sponsorship Form to you.

Sorry for the short notice, but if you are willing & able, more work can be done at Fairmont Park... Thursday night!

The weather is going to be great, the Riley County Parks department has approved what we're doing there (with direction), so we can get on it again now.

Here's the details.
- Thursday Night from 5:00pm until 8:00pm (approx.). Come & go as you can, any time amount will be helpful!
- Bring gloves & plenty of water.
- Park in the large (west) parking lot, then walk straight south down the tunnel fairway to the wooded fairways at the other end. Just look for the other disc golfers/workers. (send me a message if you need better directions).
- Not into heavy lifting? Don't worry, we're just going to be tackling some small light weight stuff tomorrow night. We wouldn't want to overdo ourselves before the Discs Unlimited tournament.

This will be the first official workday for the Fairmont Park Course Expansion Project. The focus will be to clean out the dead, small & otherwise unwanted material in the wooded fairway (known as #4 or #5). If you want to help, all you need to bring are work gloves & plenty of water. If available, but not required, feel free to bring any lawn maintenance hand tools (non-powered) that you may have. It is a come & go as you can event. Any amount of time will be helpful.

COURSE DESIGN MEETING - MARCH 25TH 5:30PM - LUTHERAN CAMPUS MINISTRY BLDG. 1745 ANDERSON AVE:
This will be the meeting in which we finalize the Fairmont Course Expansion layout, and any changes to the current course. All of the recently displayed fairways will be analyzed & considered, then a hybrid layout will be created containing the best elements of the above mentioned fairways. After our final layout is agreed upon, it will be submitted to the Riley County Parks Dept. for their review & comments/adjustment(s).

MILLENNIUM GOLF DISCS - 3 DISC CHALLENGE TOURNAMENT - FAIRMONT PARK FUNDRAISER - SATURDAY MAY 4TH:
Discs Unlimited & Disc Fanatics of Kansas will be co-hosting a Millennium Discs “3 Disc Challenge” Tournament as a fund raiser for our Fairmont Park course expansion project. The details of this event are still being formulated, but the basics are as follows. For an entry fee of $25, each player will receive 3 new Millennium discs of their choice (mold & weight) in which they must use during this fund raising tournament. Two rounds of 18 holes will be played at Fairmont Park. One round will be a singles round, the other round will be a triples round (3 person teams), while incorporating some unique rules to add to the fun. Stay tuned for additional tournament details.

In order to maximize the number of conceptual layouts we can “test” on site, earlier today I obtained permission from Riley County to move forward in a different manner than we have been.

Assuming more layouts are forthcoming from players, the following change in our process is going to be implemented. This basic process worked well to design the existing Warner Park course and should work well at Fairmont Park too. Especially if people submit their concepts in time to be installed for testing (see below).

Each Saturday morning, for the next 6 weeks or so, a new course concept will be “installed” by placing our large “basket” and “tee” signs. No baskets should be necessary for analyzing these preliminary course designs. The signs will remain in place for each layout for an entire week… then moved to a new proposed layout on the following Saturday morning. (Of course, the Saturday of the LCM Ice Bowl we will defer to that layout).

Once we have exhausted all the layouts that have been proposed, presumably by the first week of March, we will then set down as a group in a meeting format to create a hybrid course that contains the best elements as possible. The exact date & time of this meeting is not yet set. After we as a group establish our preferred layout, it will then need to be submitted to Riley County for their review, comments & alterations.

Considering daylight is now lasting to approx. 6pm each night, one week should provide everyone with time to see/play each conceptual layout at their convenience… in large or small groups... maybe even multiple times during those weeks.

Please be mindful that these signs will be left un-attended. Therefore DFOK members that find them out of place will need help by putting them back in their designated place for that week.

To find out the parameters & limitations Riley County has set for our expansion area, plus to reserve a week for your concept to be installed, contact myself (Rick Petrie).

In closing, YES course design takes time & can be frustrating. However, it will be worth it in the end.

Fairmont Design Day Reminder

Despite the overnight rain, and continued overcast weather, today's Design Day is still scheduled to take place today (Jan. 27th).

So, please consider coming out to Fairmont Park and help us consider multiple course expansion options. It is an "open house" style event, so feel free to come & go as you wish throughout the afternoon as there will be a temp course layout set-up all afternoon.

Many of the regular glow league players have conflicts tomorrow night. Austin and I decided to remove Tuesday the 18th from the schedule. Next Tuesday is Christmas and is also off the schedule. See you for the first glow round of the year on January 1 2013.

Glow League Update

Since the Glow League is all about having fun, the group had a discussion tonight about what weather conditions are not fun.

It was decided that if the wind chill is below 0 degrees Fahrenheit we will pass on the golf. In addition rain or freezing rain cancels glow league because neither one are fun when it is dark and cold.

Snow is ok. It should be really fun in the snow.

If in doubt, check Disc Golf Scene. If league is canceled it will be on the DFOK talk page by 5:00pm.

Warner & Fairmont Project Updates.

The last few weeks have been eventful for both the Warner Park and Fairmont Park projects. WARNER PARK (City): A leadership contingency from this club has been working towards obtaining approval to proceed with Phase II of the Warner Park course. This Phase II would amount to adding 9 more holes to the Warner Park course. No specific course layouts have been proposed, primarily because we first need to get the City comfortable with the general concept of using more of the park for disc golf. ... more

This Phase II would amount to adding 9 more holes to the Warner Park course. No specific course layouts have been proposed, primarily because we first need to get the City comfortable with the general concept of using more of the park for disc golf.
After making a presentation at the November Parks & Recreation Advisory Board meeting, plus discussing the subject at both the November and December meetings, getting the City comfortable with more disc golf in the park is not going to go quickly. Good news is the board and the City believe disc golf is a positive thing in Warner Park, however some additional public process steps will need to be taken before anything else can be constructed in that park. Stay tuned for additional project information as it becomes available.

FAIRMONT PARK (Riley Co.): Last week I met with a Riley County representative to walk the expected expansion area of Fairmont Park. This was the first on-site meeting with a county official to view the expansion area. Like above, no proposed course layout has been submitted to the governing body of this park. This meeting was used to take very close looks at property boundaries, general fairway angles, and the possibility of building in some of the parks heavily wooded areas. This meeting proved to be very productive for both parties.
The next steps on this project are as follows. The County will discuss the project at the next Riley County Parks Board meeting, plus they will discuss the potential fairway areas with the adjoining property owners. I was told no disc golfers need to attend that board meeting. After we hear back from them we will be able use their feedback to to begin our work in finalizing our course layout... We may, or may not, be required to present our course proposal to the Riley County Commission. Stay tuned for additional project information as it becomes available.

The strong showing of disc golf supporters at the November meeting certainly made an impact. As an example, the board chairperson welcomed us while smiling and saying “We have a large audience today. More than I think I have ever seen here. I understand it has to do with disc golf.” With that in mind, it would be wise to once again have a strong showing at the next meeting. It would be even better if we could have MORE in attendance than last month. Please attend if you can.

For those of you who did not attend, a brief summary of the meeting is that we are not yet in the clear to proceed building Phase II. Nor did we expect to achieve that sort of go ahead tonight. Rather we expected to make a strong case for all the positives surrounding disc golf in Warner Park, plus in the Manhattan area.

The Parks & Recreation board was very impressed with our attendance and received our multi-prong message well. Of course they also had some questions, then stated they needed some additional time to think about the topic. With that in mind, we will be going back before this board again in an upcoming month to further address any questions or concerns.

Ace Race & Swap Meet Post Event Thanks!

Thanks again to all volunteers and participants involved in yesterday's Swap Meet & Ace Race event. Your hard work & participation made this event fun for all. There was a very solid turnout of players / club members participating in the Swap Meet. Countless trades & sales were made, getting unwanted discs in the hands of people who want them. Considering the popularity of the Swap Meet, might we need two per year? We'll see. Of course there was the actual Ace Race course. The list of part ... more

Thanks again to all volunteers and participants involved in yesterday's Swap Meet & Ace Race event. Your hard work & participation made this event fun for all.

There was a very solid turnout of players / club members participating in the Swap Meet. Countless trades & sales were made, getting unwanted discs in the hands of people who want them. Considering the popularity of the Swap Meet, might we need two per year? We'll see.

Of course there was the actual Ace Race course. The list of participants contained 48 people, including players from Kansas City, Overland Park, Lenexa, McPherson, Fort Riley, Wamego, and of course Manhattan. Thanks to the flexible rules of the Discraft Ace Race format, the temp. course came together nicely including some very fun and "Aceable" holes. Thank You to ALL players who brought their basket(s). It was much appreciated! Because these gracious players, the course included one ground level basket, one hanging basket, one 8' tall basket, and a big finish 18th hole with a bank of 7 baskets in front of a baseball backstop! Also because of the flexible format, participants were encouraged to request who they wanted to play with. Thanks to the friendly nature of all participants in attendance, 8 groups of 6 people were easily assembled to take on the course.

Fairmont Park Expansion in the Local News!

This is DFOK News about News, so to speak. If you listen to the local radio news station (1350am KMAN) in the mornings, this week you heard two segments that involve Fairmont Park, and even mentioned us (but they didn't name us by name). If you listen to the local radio news station (1350am KMAN) in the mornings, this week you heard two segments that involve Fairmont Park, and even mentioned us (but they didn't name us by name).

BACK STORY: As you may already have heard, the person in charge of the Riley County Parks system, assistant Public Works Director Rod Meredith, retired Friday. If you've ever spoken to him you'd know that he is (was) pleased with, maybe even "proud" to have, a disc golf course at Fairmont Park. So it is probably no surprise that he is (was) working with us to create an additional 9 holes, thus making it a full 18 hole course.

NEWS STORY: When the local news radio station, KMAN 1350am, covered the retirement of Mr. Meredith they discussed many of the Riley County Parks Dept. ongoing & future projects with him. Much to my surprise, the subject of us expanding the course at Fairmont Park was covered in greater detail than anything else at Fairmont Park.

On Tuesday the 14th, Mr. Meredith, plus one county commissioner, were guests on KMAN to talk about Riley County governmental issues. Predictably, they spent a considerable amount of time talking about Mr. Meredith's accomplishments & visions for the future. When he got to the subject of Fairmont Park, he specifically stated that they are in the process of expanding the disc golf course from 9 holes to 18 holes. That was exciting to hear, but nothing more was said. The name of that radio show is In-Focus, here's a link to their on-demand audio ( http://1350kman.com/?p=20669 ).

Then came the KMAN News on Friday the 17th. The interviewer (Cathy Dawes) listed a few potential improvements for Fairmont Park, but the only one she provided any detail about was the disc golf course expansion. She described the current course as "popular with all levels of players, because it's beginner friendly but still provides some challenges for more expireanced players". She then stated that an addition of 9 holes, to make it an 18 hole course, has been approved and is now in the design stage. Then they played an audio clip from Mr. Meredith. In the clip he talked about, (1) working with the local disc golf organization to get an additional 9 holes designed, (2) described the general area of the park we will be using, plus (3) stated that the disc golfers are staking the course layout and practicing it to make sure it plays well.

It was especially nice of Mr. Meredith to make a point of mentioning our project as he approached his retirement, thus setting the stage for us to finish what we've started.

All & all it was a nicely done news segment demonstrating that disc golf is still on the rise in Manhattan.

Attention Disc Fanatics of Kansas!

Thanks to a lot of hard work and determination by the Ft. Riley contingency of Disc Fanatics of Kansas (DFOK), this Saturday is going to be a big day for disc golf at Ft. Riley.

For those of you who have not already heard, a handful of players have received approval for, plus designed, a new disc golf course for Ft. Riley's Moon Lake. This plan came about due to some re-occurring problems with the current disc golf course at the Riley Conference Center. Thus approval has been granted to "move" the course from the Riley Conference Center to the Moon Lake park.

Here's where you come in. This Saturday, July 14th a work day is being held by your fellow area disc golfers to remove and re-install the baskets (Conference Center to Moon Lake). So, if you have some free time Saturday and are willing to volunteer some sweat equity for a local course, here's your chance. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Who: Anyone
What: Move Disc Golf Baskets
When: Saturday July 14th, 9:00am - Until ?? (come & go as you need)
Where: Riley Conference Center, 9:00am. If you can't get there at 9:00am sharp, when you arrive just look for people removing baskets.
How: Disc Golfers will be removing the baskets, placing them into pick-up trucks, then hauling them & re-installing them at their new locations.

9am Independence Day Bag Tag Round

For those of you who want to get in some disc golf, prior to your Independence Day picnics & fireworks, Warner Park will be the place to be.

Who: Players of all skill levels, Men & Women.
What: Bag Tag League (only), no Points. However, players can get signed up for both the 2012-2013 Bag Tag League, and the Points League.
When: 9am Check-In, tee time to follow ASAP.
Where: Warner Park.

Misc: Considering it is a national holiday that a lot of people spend with family, the Independence Day round will not be an Official Points League round.

DFOK at Abilene Shootout, Plus Progress at Fairmont Park

Shout out to all the DFOK members who played in today's Abilene Shootout. DFOK was well represented by being 25% of the participants in attendance, including many taking home winnings. Everyone seemed to have a great time, but unfortunately nobody remembered to take a group photo... oh well. On a different DFOK Club note, it was easy to see on the way out of town (on K-177 to Abilene) that the expansion area of Fairmont Park is looking really nice. My phone call to Riley County earlier in the week has already resulted in getting our expansion area mowed! That's right, no more waist tall grass down in those wooded meadows! This will help us play our TEMPORARY 9 layout, and more importantly make it much easier to design the PERMANENT 9 layout... Resulting in Fairmont being a full 18 hole course.

2012-2013 BAG TAG & POINTS LEAGUE NEWS

Thursday night’s DFOK meeting was very productive. The meeting was the third in a series of meetings held this spring. A total of 14 local disc golfers have attended these meetings, averaging 9 players per meeting. On Thursday night, all types of great ideas were further discussed. Most importantly, the DFOK members in attendance decided (by vote) on many important decisions for the upcoming Bag Tag & Points Leagues. On Thursday night, all types of great ideas were further discussed. Most importantly, the DFOK members in attendance decided (by vote) on many important decisions for the upcoming Bag Tag & Points Leagues.


The following summarizes the league related results of the meeting.

2012-2013 BAG TAG LEAGUE - $5 One-Time Player Fee for this League

1. First Batch Funding: Thanks to the generosity of the following players, the required funds have been raised to purchase the first batch of tags for this season.

$30 – Rob Adams
$20 – Mark Kewley
$20 – Jon Tveite
$20 – Rick Petrie
$20 - Adam Jonhson
$5 - Bill Pryor
$5 - Kirsten Hoogstraten
$5 - Elliot Arpin
Each of these players will be reimbursed by the club, minus their $5 entry fee, as the season progresses.
(Tom Lowman pledged $35 but was not needed. Thanks for offering, Tom!)

2. Bag Tag Artwork: This year’s tags will be high quality one piece tags which are mass produced by a company in Illinois. Once again this year, Mark Kewley provided multiple graphic/artwork options. The artwork for this year’s tag was finalized at Thursday night’s DFOK meeting. Our artwork and bag tag order will be sent to the manufacture this week. We expect to receive our first batch of tags later this month.

3. Bag Tag Schedule: There will be no major changes to the Bag Tag league schedule for this season. (Not to be confused with the Points League). The season will start in late June 2012, ending in late May 2013. Thus including many months of winter play too.

4. Bag Tag Challenge Rules: There are only minor, but important changes to the 2012-2013 Bag Tag league rules. These rules will apply to situations when “reasonable” Challenges for Top 10 tags are not being honored. Further details will be provided soon, plus in the official league rules.

5. Numberless “Casual” Tags: This may be an option for those of you who don’t get into playing for the standard sequentially numbered tags, but otherwise enjoy the Warner league experience. If you are interested in a numberless tag please contact Rick (me) ASAP, because there will be a limited supply of numberless tags.


2012-2013 POINTS LEAGUE - $5 Bag Tag League Membership Required.

1. Points League Schedule: There will be three "short” & separate back-to-back-to-back Points League seasons this time around, rather than only one long Points League season. These seasons will start/finish with the changes of daylight savings time. Thus there will be “Summer”, “Winter” & “Spring” Points League seasons. The final Spring season will end in late May (in sync with the Bag Tag league schedule).

2. Points League Divisions: With this season’s Points Leagues, there will be four divisions for players to choose from, rather than just Men’s & Women’s divisions in the previous years. The divisions to chose from will be Advanced, Intermediate, Recreational, and Women's.

3. Points League Point Structure: Points will be earned according to divisions, rather than according to all players in attendance at an event. For example; If a total of 5 Intermediate Division players are competing at an official league night, the maximum points those Intermediate Division players can earn that night is 5 points (unless he/she hits an ace too).

4. NOT Handicapping the Points League: Handicapping the Points League has been discussed at great length at all three of the DFOK meetings this spring. It was decided at Thursday’s meeting that having three short seasons, plus divisions to choose from, would be simpler & more widely supported than a handicapped league.

With that in mind, you can look forward to starting the 2012-2013 DFOK Bag Tag League and Points League sometime in late June. With the changes described above, it is sure to be a more enjoyable & exciting season.

The first order of business in this DFOK news flash is to recognize Thad & Austin for their maximum effort today. DISC GOLF CLINIC
There are two more sessions of the disc golf clinic at the Tuttle Creek State Park River Pond course. This effort directly benefits kids from all but two Kansas counties who are visiting Manhattan for the week. These visitors are in town as part of the 4-H Discovery Days annual event.
To pitch in & help host, just head out to the Tuttle Creek course during any of these time blocks. If you only have a few minutes, it would still be helpful.

Tomorrow night is the 3rd in a series of meetings with the intention of becoming more organized.

Volunteers: Teach Disc Golf and/or Loan Discs?

Hello fellow Disc Fanatics of Kansas. On Wednesday & Thursday of next week, the Tuttle Creek State Park staff will be hosting mini day camps for high school age 4Hers. During these day camps, they will be teaching the camp goers about some of the activities the Tuttle Creek State Park has to offer. Among those activities are disc golf. Here's where you come in. Hello fellow Disc Fanatics of Kansas.

On Wednesday & Thursday of next week, the Tuttle Creek State Park staff will be hosting mini day camps for high school age 4Hers. During these day camps, they will be teaching the camp goers about some of the activities the Tuttle Creek State Park has to offer. Among those activities are disc golf.

Here's where you come in. I have been contacted to find out is any local disc golfers are interested teaching the basics of our sport to these day campers. At the very least the Tuttle Creek staff would like to borrow some discs from us to use for these day camps.

So, if you have some discs you would loan for the cause, please contact me. Of course, be sure the loaner discs are "disposable" because there's a chance some discs might get lost. I'll do my best to minimize the lost disc scenario... (keep reading) but there will be no gurartees you'll get all of your discs back.

Also, if you want to host/teach one or more of the sessions , here's the details.
The camps will take place on
Wed. May 30: 9:30a thru 11:30a, & 1:30a thru 3:30p.
Plus
Thur. May 31: 9:30a thru 11:30a, & 1:30a thru 3:30p

During those 2 hour sessions the State Parks people will rotate 4 different groups of approx. 12 kids through your station. In other words, you'll see 12 kids for 30 minutes, then 12 new kids for 30 minutes, so on & so on. Thus you will teach disc golf to
approx. 50 kids per session.

You don't have to work all four sessions to help. If you can only work one, or two, that is fine. All volunteers of all levels will help us put our best foot foreword.

If you're interested in volunteering your time, or just some old discs, please contact me (on the site or in person) ASAP. We'll work out the details from there.

The START of the 2012-2013 Disc Fanatics of Kansas Bag Tag League & Points League season is right around the corner. It will be a fresh start, with new tags & a new points race! As you may or may not know, the previous bag tag seasons have started in June, ran through the fall, winter & spring, then ended in May. YES, some minor tweaks are being made to improve the overall player experience; however the format of the upcoming season will be similar to previous season’s. Stay tuned for more ... more

The one time entry fee for the 2012-2013 season has been set at $5. With that in mind, this weekend the Disc Fanatics of Kansas will begin accepting pre-pay registrations for the upcoming season. (The actual tags will be issued at the first Warner Wednesday league round. Date, TBD.)

Warner Wednesday Tag & Points SEASON FINALE! Tomorrow 6pm!

Tomorrow is the final day of the SEASON for the DFOK 2011-2012 Flint Hills Bag Tag League & Points League. With that in mind, tomorrow night's “WARNER WEDNESDAY” will be a big night with final tag numbers and points standings on the line.

In order to facilitate as many league members as possible, the tee time has been pushed back to 6pm (sharp).

DFOK Tuttle Creek Work Day - Great Success

Today was the day of the disc golf course work day at Manhattan's Tuttle Creek State Park River Pond course. Many needed improvements & maintenance issues were addressed by DFOK members today. The issues addressed during today's work day were as follows: The addition and/or restoring of many alternate pin placements. - - New (or long lost) pin placements were set in new concrete. - - Existing pin placements were re-set in new concrete. - - Cleaning out the existing "muck" in many p ... more

Today was the day of the disc golf course work day at Manhattan's Tuttle Creek State Park River Pond course. Many needed improvements & maintenance issues were addressed by DFOK members today.

The issues addressed during today's work day were as follows:
The addition and/or restoring of many alternate pin placements.
- - New (or long lost) pin placements were set in new concrete.
- - Existing pin placements were re-set in new concrete.
- - Cleaning out the existing "muck" in many pin placements.
- - Repainting the bases in bright colors in hopes of them not being damaged (when not in use).
The installation of wood chips / mulch around the baskets & tee boxes.
The much needed total renovation of basket #3.
- - New properly sized chains
- - Pipe cut so the basket sets at the proper height
- - Converted from yellow to black color.
Repainted all the baskets with a new coat of black paint.
Repairs & improvements to all of the existing baskets.
- - Closed the infamous gaps in baskets by welding in additional bars.
- - Removed the wobble in the chain racks & baskets by welding them to then center pipe.
- - Either cut down in height, or adding a "bead" on the center pipe, to prevent them from setting too high or low.

Many area disc golfers pitched in at today's work day. The work started at approx. 8:30a & lasted until approx. 4:00p. Thanks to all the hard work by the members listed below, the Tuttle Creek River Pond Course is now in great condition, plus the spirit of the Disc Fanatics of Kansas is greater than ever. Well done everyone!

1&2. By now, you know all about these leagues. Come play with & against your friends in these two leagues.

3. On Thursday evening, Manhattan's Convention & Visitors Bureau is hosting the 4th annual "Get Around 2 It" expo. The event takes place at the Blue Earth Plaza, south of the Flint Hills Discovery Center (at 4th & Colorado). This event is designed to help residents find out about many of the interesting activities the area has to offer. More than 50 area attractions, organizations, and businesses will be represented at this expo. The event will also include activities, prize drawings and live music!
Yes, the Disc Fanatics of Kansas will be at this years Get Around 2 It (again). We have arranged to set-up an information table, plus a putting station. Of course we will be introducing our sport to many (potential) players and or club members. In addition this will be a great venue to educate the public about the positive impacts courses have on parks, while having minimal impacts on neighboring properties...
Come on down & check out the entire event, plus feel free to stop by the DFOK table to help out for a while or at least try to earn a highly sought after event "token" at the putting station.

4. Saturday Morning has been designated by the DFOK club as a Tuttle Creek Disc Golf Work Day. There will be many projects taking place. Some of which include; the delivery of and the spreading of mulch / wood chips, making repairs to the baskets, repairing existing & installing new pin placements, plus a few other tasks if time permits. The start time is set for 8:30am, however feel free to come and go as needed. So, find a pair of gloves plus a rake or shovel then head to the Tuttle Course Saturday morning.

5. As you might not already know there is a weekly league, on Sunday's, at the Ft. Riley Conference Center. The league is called the BRO League (Big Red One), which is hosted each week by many of the on-post disc golfers.

WORK DAY

Yes, someone was kind enough to take notes (some would call minutes) of the items discussed in the meeting. We are in the process of setting up a web site that will be able to display our meeting notes & agendas in chronological order. In the mean time, I will try to post them on this site.

The wait for information about getting your DFOK shirt(s) is over! Yes, arrangements have been finalized for people to start purchasing DFOK shirts.

Here’s the process:
You go to the GTM Sportswear store on McCall Road (in Manhattan, KS)
You see the color & style options that have been arranged.
You try on sample shirts for size (if needed).
You place your order for your shirt & you pay GTM for your shirt.
GTM will embroider the approved DFOK logo onto your shirt (probably not while you wait though).
GTM will notify you when your shirt will be ready for pick up.

Here’s the details:
WHO: Any DFOK league member can purchase a shirt.
WHAT: Performance “dri” wicking polo style shirts (see link below), with a DFOK logo on the front.
WHEN: Order your shirt(s) starting Tuesday, April 3rd.

Ordering online may not be an option. Contact GTM for details.
WHY: Because a lot of DFOK members have expressed interest in getting a “DFOK shirt”.

WHAT’S A GLOW ROUND?
For those of you who do not know, some people play disc golf in the dark. It is possible by throwing "glow" discs (plastic that’s made to glow in the dark) and/or by attaching glowing devices to baskets & discs. Mark Kewley has graciously already purchased glow sticks to light up the baskets, so all you have to do is get your disc(s) to glow. Many local stores sell glow items that you can attach to discs (see examples below), so it’s not too late for you to gear up for this glow round.

Disc Golf in K-State Newspaper

Last nights Warner Wednesday drew the attention of more than just disc golfers. The Kansas State Collegian, which is the K-State student newspaper, sent Evert Nelson to Warner Park to cover our sport. The result was a nice looking disc golf reference across the top of the front page, plus a full page spread in the middle of the paper. New Mowing Pattern at Warner Park!

The SHORT version is as follows: YESTERDAY, the City of Manhattan Parks & Rec. department mowed a large part of the Warner Park disc golf course. No, not all the tall grass has been cut. The LONG version is as follows: As you may know, until this year the current disc golf course area, also known as "Little Warner" has been cut & bailed for hay in late summer each year (for many, many years). Unfortunately, this year that local farmer decided that he was no longer interested in this hay. Presumably because there is not as much hay as there was prior to installing the disc golf course. This change in mowing/haying determination did not develop until early August.

Since the determination was made to no longer cut the hay, Mark and I have been "negotiating" with the Parks & Rec. staff to get a new (more disc golf friendly) mowing pattern/design. No it is not exactly as we requested, however it is very nice and we suspect disc golfers of all levels will enjoy this new mowing pattern/design.

So, feel free to spread the word "They Mowed Warner".

Mayors Award for Disc Golf - Tues, Aug. 2nd at 7pm - 1101 Poyntz Ave.

I apologize if this comes across as Mark and I just self promoting, patting ourselves on the back, etc. We decided to accept this award because we thought it would improve our chances of getting the "next nine" rolling at Warner Park. I apologize if this comes across as Mark and I just self promoting, patting ourselves on the back, etc. We decided to accept this award because we thought it would improve our chances of getting the "next nine" rolling at Warner Park.

More specifically, our reason for posting this on DiscGolfScene.com is to try to get as many disc golfers as possible to attend this meeting to show their support for Disc Golf in Warner Park. We have a good thing going right now, with all the right people on board, so we want to use this positive momentum to our advantage and get the Warner Park "next nine" approved ASAP.

So, I hope to see you at this weeks Manhattan City Commission Meeting, which will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 2nd at 1101 Poyntz Avenue (City Hall). The meeting starts at 7pm and Mark and I will receive the award just minutes after the meeting starts. IT WILL ONLY TAKE 30 MINUTES OR SO TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT. Just show up at approx. 6:50 +/-, set in the back of the room with the other disc golf supporters, set through the award presentation a few minutes later, then leave. If we get enough people there it will be very noticeable.

Community Service Award = Positive Publicity for Warner Park Course

On July 28, 2011, Mark Kewley and I found out that we had been nominated for, and have been selected to receive, a Community Service Award from the City of Manhattan, KS. On July 28, 2011, Mark Kewley and I found out that we had been nominated for, and have been selected to receive, a Community Service Award from the City of Manhattan, KS. We will be receiving this award because of all the volunteer work we put into proposing, fund raising, designing, installing, maintaining, etc. the Warner Park disc golf course.

Mark and I are looking at this award in a broader sense. More specifically, we're looking at it as an indication that the Warner Park Disc Golf Course, and it's users (YOU), are effecting the the community in a positive way... and maybe most appealing to you, we think it's now time to start a move toward getting the "next nine" holes approved at Warner Park.

Here's where it gets interesting.

It is my understanding that he and I will be recognized at the next Manhattan City Commission meeting, which is scheduled for Tuesday evening, August 2nd. I will post the specific time ASAP. So, what we would like to do is have as many disc golfers in the audience as possible in order to display the public interest in our beloved sport of Disc Golf! This is the sort of public display that makes impressions in meetings (on decision makers)... which should help our goal of eventually expanding Warner Park to an 18 hole course.

So, please consider coming to City Hall (at 1101 Poyntz Ave.) on Tuesday evening August 2nd to set through this brief presentation. By doing so, you'll help get the ball (or disc) rolling for the "next nine" at Warner Park.

Today's Weather Situation 5/11 (waiting it out)

Just in case you did not know, we are currently in a Severe Thunderstorm WATCH, until 5pm this evening.

SO,
If it is allowed to expire at 5pm, and there are no new WATCHES or WARNINGS, we will play a full 18 (provided it's not too dark to see). Yes, even if is raining.

If they extend the WATCH past 5:30, we will only play 9 tonight.

If they issue a WARNING, tonight's round will be completely CANCELED!

Is this confusing? What does that mean?

Our bag tag "seasons" are set up to run from June to May each year, partially due to so many students leaving town after each school year ends. With that in mind, there are only three (3) more Warner Wednesday league nights left in the current “2010-2011 SEASON”. I'm expecting an exciting finish as people try to jockey for the best ending bag tag number as possible, and of course for important league points. So that means if you want to finish this season with a great tag number, and as high as possible in the points standings, CRUNCH TIME IS HERE!

So, good luck to all competitors as this season comes to an exciting finish, plus I look forward to seeing you back in the bag tag & points leagues next season (starting in about a month).

Terrific Tuttle Tuesday

The weather was terrific, the competition was torrid! Ten players attended this week’s Tuttle Tuesday. Yes that means there were five doubles teams. For many it was their first round of doubles play for the season, but you sure couldn’t tell because there was a lot of good strategy on display. The scores of the night ranged from two strokes under par to a whopping ten strokes under par! The winning doubles team of the night was the team of Mr. Clouse & Mr. Ellis, who won by a slim margin of one stroke. Good job guys!

Tonight’s round was enjoyed by all, including one soul who had been AWOL from the Manhattan disc golf scene since last fall. Welcome back Toe Joe!

So, if you’re looking for a fun night of disc golf and you’ve never played doubles, you might consider giving the Tuttle Tuesday a try.

Severe Weather Rules

As you might have heard at the closing of last weeks round, we've established some "Severe Weather Cancellation" rules for league nights at Warner Park. Weather WARNING = League Night CANCELED. Weather WATCH = League Night SHORTENED (only 9 holes). The above described rules will apply if a Severe Thunderstorm Warning OR a Tornado Warning is in effect in Riley or Geary County, at league start time (5:30pm). If the National Weather Service allows an alert to officially "expire" by the leag ... more

Tom Oldfather, known as Tom Old on this site, asked to use the DFoK Club profile on this site to help coordinate a league at Manhattan's Tuttle Creek State Park (River Pond Course). In order to do that he needed to be added as Admin on this site for the DFoK Club.
