It started out as an idea to try some different formats during disc golf leagues in season 1 (Spring). Then I decided to take the ideas to a whole new level in Summer. I went from 5 formats to 10 formats . . . and I even added Match Play as an additional format to settle who the winners were. Not only did you need to play 6 weeks of the league . . . you also needed to finish in the top 8 in your division . . . then you needed to beat others in head to head matchups in order to take home the divisional title. In the end I am very happy with how things played out with this league setup and I am sure hopeful that you enjoyed yourself throughout. I know not every format was everyones favorite but I do think that everyone can learn from the different formats. You have to remember that disc golf is not all 100% physical . . . you have to have a strong mental game just like in golf. I am hopeful these formats all contributed to your games throughout the year! In the end it seemed enjoyable for everyone . . . thanks again for being loyal attendees . . . I appreciate it more than you can imagine. It makes it a lot easier to know there will always be a core group of people coming to league each week . . . sometimes even regardless of the weather.

SO . . . The Match Play Finals and Consolation matches completed today:

In Open . . . Scott Slauson (#1 seed) defeated Brad Weber (#2 seed) to win the Open Division. I found it interesting that there was only 1 upset in the division . . . with Joel Kamoske (#4 seed) defeating TJ Webber (#3 seed) in the Consolation Match. Take into consideration that the average scores from the #1 seed to the #8 seed had a differential of about 5 throws per round . . . that is not surprising at all. The #2 seed through the #5 seed were only a differential of 1.5 or so. That is a tight grouping of abilities.

In Intermediate . . . Patrick Brah (#1 seed) defeated the Cinderella story of Manic Mondays Match Play Dan Bertzyk (#7 seed) 2 UP to take down the Intermediate Division. Dan had beaten Greg Klein (#2 seed) as well as Aaron Zittnan (#6 seed) to advance to the finals . . .and showed he can compete with the best of the division. He definitely rose to the occasion during the Match Play. The Consolation Match saw Chris Daskam (#4 seed) defeating Aaron Zittnan (#6 seed) 3 & 2. This scenario seemed best suited to this division since there was only a 3 throw differential between the #1 and #8 seed. Anyone on a hot streak had a chance to make a move in the playoffs . . . while anyone struggling might not be so fortunate.

In Recreational . . . Mark Olver (#3 seed) defeated Greg Weber (#1 seed) on Saturday since Greg was unable to play tonight. The lower seed Disc Dog (#4) also defeated Nick Williams (#2 seed). Not that I question anyone's abilities in this division . . . but it doesn't surprise me that it played out the way it did. All 4 of these players who made the match play had averages within 1 throw of each other and that proves that anyone can win at any time in Match Play.

When playing in flighted divisions . .. I think this idea brings a whole new element to the game of disc golf leagues. It isn't just about attending the most leagues . . . or having the best scoring average . . . sometimes you have to elevate your game . . . sometimes you have to play through injury . . . sometimes you have to play the opponent and not just against yourself. I think it showed up in more than one occasion where someone had their personal bests at the most crucial time of the league.

I would like to think that the league actually made many of you better players . . . and I look forward to seeing your further advancement. Some of you have already indicated you want to move up . . . that is a positive thing to hear . . . because that means you want to play against better players. You will learn from watching them . . . you will learn from losing to them multiple weeks on what shots you need to add to your arsenal. However, you are not required to move up if your average places you in a particular division . . . but I will not stop anyone from wanting to move up to compete against the next level of players.

While my other league is wrapping up in 2 weeks . . . we head into the glow season . . . a time to truly just have fun. If you have not played in a glow league in the past I highly recommend it. Throw out your competitive spirit and just hope to survive the round. We will all make stupid mistakes and we will all hit branches we did not see .. . just continue to play disc golf in the fall despite the earlier sunsets and come out and have some fun. DISCIN IN THE DARK was my travelling league last season but I decided to focus my efforts at 1 course . . . Valley View. This league will be taking place on Mondays. I also continued with the travelling theme and am running Travelling Glow Throwers this fall on Thursdays. Both leagues start the week of September 8th and will run through November. I am excited to play some glow DG since fall is my favorite time of year in WI!!!!

Well everyone . . . we already have one divisional winner decided because they would have been unable to play their match tomorrow. I have the trophies all put together and ready for you to customize them again . . . I hope to see some of you who have already been knocked out of the Match Play Finals tomorrow to spectate and put the pressure on the finalists. I do not want noise or heckling but I want extra eyes on everyone to make them feel like they are in a big tournament. That will truly decide who is the most rounded player . . . who has the mental fortitude and physical ability to rise to the occasion?

In Intermediate we will have Patrick Brah against Dan Bertzyk for the Divisional Winner while Chris Daskam will try to defeat Aaron Zittnan for 3rd place.

The Recreational division has been decided in terms of first and second but Disc Dog and Nick Williams will be playing for the 3rd place trophy.

If you cannot come out for the match play portion tomorrow (6PM start), I will be doing the trophy ceremony in the Valley View Parking Lot immediately after all of the matches complete. I will be putting out all of my inventory after the trophy ceremony to give everyone a chance to redeem any funny money or pick up a nice disc they have been waiting to get. Then we will head up to Quaker Steak and Lube to celebrate and discuss the season. I think it went pretty well but am always open to suggestions.

All of the top seeds won each match leaving the #1 seed to play the #2 seed for the divisional win.

The #1 seed Scott Slauson defeated the #8 seed Dustin Skorupinski by a narrow margin. Dustin shot his best league round in match play which shows he rose to the occasion and focussed on playing his best. Scott won the match 3 and 2 (meaning he was up 3 holes with only 2 hole to play).

The #4 seed Joel Kamoske defeated me (the #5 seed) fairly easily winning 4 and 3. Joel was up the entire match and I only won 2 holes outright.

The #3 seed TJ Webber defeated the #6 seed Dave Olson 3 and 2.

The #2 seed Brad Weber defeated the #7 seed Bob Bawden in a roller coaster of a match. Brad had the early lead getting to 3 up but Bob fought back winning 3 holes in a row to get back to All Square but he lost the match 2 and 1.

ROUND 1 INTERMEDIATE
The #8 seed could not make it so the #1 seed Patrick Brah ended up with the first forfeit.

The #4 seed Chris Daskam defeated the #5 seed Shaun Kirchner in their Sunday match. Chris and Shaun went back and forth the whole match until Chris went up 2 with only 3 holes to play to ultimately win the next hole and the match 3 and 1.

The #6 seed Aaron Zittnan upset the #3 seed Jared Jacobson. Looking at the scorecard Aaron also wrote that he had shot a (-10) so he came prepared for this match.

The #7 seed Dan Bertzyk also upset the #2 seed Greg Klein. They went back and forth a few times in the match but Dan pulled away winning 3 of the last 6 holes to finish 2 and 1.

ROUND 1 RECREATIONAL
The #1 seed Greg Weber took down the #4 seed Disc Dog winning 4 of the 8 final holes to finish 3 and 2.

The #2 seed Nick Williams and the #3 seed Mark Olver need to do a sudden death playoff to determine who plays for the divisional win and who plays for 3rd place.


ROUND 2 OPEN
The #1 seed Scott Slauson defeated the #4 seed Joel Kamoske pushing the first 9 holes ultimately winning the match 2 and 1.

The #2 seed Brad Weber took down the #3 seed TJ Webber highlighting his win with an ace on #13 . . . which I am thrilled to have run up to the basket to catch on film. Brad won the match 5 and 3 and moves onto the Finals while TJ will play for 3rd place.

ROUND 2 INTERMEDIATE
The #1 seed Patrick Brah took down the #4 seed Chris Daskam winning the match 2 and 1.

The #7 seed Dan Bertzyk was the story of the match play so far by also defeating the #6 seed Aaron Zittnan winning 4 holes in a row on 10-13 to finish the match 5 and 3.

Well there were a few glitches and circumstances that occurred on this first attempt at making Match Play a factor in Manic Mondays. I will learn from these issues and make sure it is better planned out for next year.

1) One person could not come which lead to a forfeit also causing a need to alter my already figured out payouts.
2) One match did not completely understand the scoring. They thought someone had won the match because one person had a better score but in fact they were tied after 18 holes in Match Play scoring. They will have to meet up to do a sudden death playoff (first person to win a hole outright wins the match) to determine the winner.
3) One person in the finals cannot be here next week so they will have to try and arrange the finals on their own . . . I am completely fine with that but now they have to wait on the match that wasn't completed. Perhaps the finals could be a completely play on your own time so that it gives everyone a fair chance to play their matches in the event of a schedule conflict.
4) A couple people showed up wanting to play a match with someone but I was out playing my match. This was made necessary because we had to play two matches and better planning would have helped me realize the ramifications of that better.
5) There was no ace pool . . . and someone hit an ace! The reason there was no ace pool is because not everyone was playing the same number of holes and it wouldn't really be fair to charge everyone for the ace pool and someone who happens to play more holes has more chances at an ace.
6) The basket on #13 was less than ideal but I did what I could to make it fair. I hope it didn't cost anyone a match. I hope to have them (9 and 13) repaired by next week . . . but the parks department hasn't called me back today about bringing them in for welding like we had planned. Brad Weber did get his ace to stick on the broken basket so it couldn't have been too bad.

All in all I feel like this format is something I need to keep a part of this league. It is intense and a whole different strategy. What do you think . . . please post comments below or on facebook. I fixed up the basket on #13 temporarily and I just hope people can be respectful for 48 hours). If Hole #13 is broken and unacceptable for putting . . . each match can determine what they want to do . . . play an additional hole instead of 13, play the basket as is, play if it hits chains it counts . . . it does not matter as long as both of you are in agreement with what to do if the basket is in an unusable condition. Please decide what you are going to do before you throw the hole because if someone parks it while the other person leaves themselves a 60' putt . . . I know what each of their opinions are going to be.

Well . . . 10 weeks have passed and we have ended the beginning of this league. This is just like any other league or sporting event that has qualifying and a bracket placement based on how you qualified.

Basically . .. everyone played 10 hard weeks to fight for points which determine who you play in the Match Play. These points determine where you are placed in your division. The only difference between this league and any other event is that you needed to play 6 weeks (minimum) to qualify for the Match Play Portion of this league. Since noone qualified by playing 6 weeks that didn't have enough points earned and only 2 persons (that didn't qualify) had more points than those who did qualify . . . my 6 week minimum criteria did it's job by keeping those out of the match play that perhaps played better than their individual point totals (those inappropriately placed in a specific division). . . but it also means that those who played a minimum of 6 weeks in the league . . . also made the finals (which I whole-heartedly intended). This goes two ways . . . those loyal league attendees make the match play . .. while those who seem to be placed in the wrong division . . . do not make the match play portion. I expect those people to move up a division and challenge for the division in the upcoming season.

Open Division:
Scott Slauson played a practice round with Greg Klein before league tonight because he happened to be earlier than he expected. In that practice round he shot (-17) A PERSONAL BEST BY 2 THROWS! Well, that was not all he had in store for VV tonight. . . he bettered his personal best during the league round also . . . meaning he shot the "Elusive (-18)". I also heard (because I was in the group behind his group) how he smashed chains on #14 with a lazer beam but it did not stick. In case you had not noticed . . . #14 is one of the baskets needing repair and it has for about 1 year. There is no outer ring on the chains so a hard shot is more proned to kicking out. I will be putting that ring on my immediate To Do List because I hate to think I cost someone such an incredible round. No matter how you look at it Scott had what can be considered a "Perfect Round" tonight. He is a great guy, a good friend, and one heck of a player as he showed tonight, I know Terry Miller and Kyle Dolezar have claims at (-18) in the past and I heard a rumor of Mike Kobach shooting a (-19) before with a perfect round with an ACE but this at the very least equals the best round I have personally experienced at VV.

Outside of Scott's achievements tonight . . .there was a 3 way tie with (-12) between Brad Weber, Dave Olson, and last weeks newcomer Derek Radtke. I took the last of the cash with my round of (-11).

Intermediate Division:
Tonight the Intermediate division was a little more tame than previous nights.The hot round on the night was Tim Jensen (who has only played the course a handful of times has shot the hot round on either night). Tim shot (-9) tonight to beat the field by 2 while last week he tied for the divisional win with Chris Daskam but won in the playoff.

Behind Tim . . . there was a three way tie for 2nd with (-7) between Pat Brah, Chris Daskam, and Dan Bertzyk . . .and a 3 way tie for 5th at (-6) between Greg Klein, Jared Jacobson, and Shaun Kirchner The match play format could have played out so differently if any one of these league attendees play particularly well or poorly. As it was . .. these gentleman pretty much held their ground.

In the Recreational Division we saw that the leader didn't lose positioning despite being injured with a work-related back injury. Greg Weber did not play the last two weeks of league because he was injured . . but also resting up for the match play. He was confident he would not get passed in the overall standings and he was correct since the standings did not change despite outside interference. .Semifinals:

There will be no playoffs for the Women's or Junior Division . . .but Ethan is eligible for a small trophy and Cassandra has won herself some Funny Money for being the highest point getter. One day I hope to have a consistent women's turnout despite the fact that women have shied away from league in the past.

Monday August 12th will be the 10th and final week of Manic Mondays Divisional formats before we move into Match Play to decide the divisional placement.

If the ace pool is not hit I will be breaking it up by division and giving away a portion of the money to each division. I do not want to carry the ace pool money into the match play because it is likely some of those who don't make the match play will not be attending those weeks. I feel like the Match Play weeks could have their own ace pool.

The Stableford format is a unique format in that it isn't your overall score that determines how you finish on the night. . . it is points earned from each individual hole. It is one instance where an inconsistent player can do well as long as they capitalize on the birdie and ace chances. Since there were no aces it came down to who was slightly more aggressive to really go for that one putt that made the difference. There were also a couple instances where one person (with a higher score) actually beat out someone with a better score because they had more birdies despite having more bogies or double bogies. It rewards aggressiveness because a birdie and a bogey are worth 1 more point than 2 pars. Playing safe . . . doesn't benefit anyone in this format. I think most people understood that and can see the real world differences.

In Open we had a newcomer Derek Radtke prove he is in the correct division for sure shooting only his 3rd round at VV (-14) which was bogey free for 46 points. There were three disappointed people (Me, TJ Webber, and Todd Farnham) waiting anxiously in the parking lot for Derek, Joel, and Brad to finish so we would know if we needed to settle out 3 way tie (-12) in a playoff for the divisional win. Each of us had a bogey and 13 birdies so we still ended in a 3 way tie for 2nd with 43 points. It turned out Derek stole our excitement by beating us . . . and by 2 throws none the less. Nice shooting Derek, we all hope to see you come back to challenge us all to do better next time. Dave Olson had the only other double digit round (-11) to take 5th place and get the last of the cash with his 40 points.

In Intermediate we saw the top of the division drop slightly in the overall points standings and the middle of the pack in the division as well as two newcomers stealing some of their points away. One Newcomer Tim Jensen (-8) ended up beating out Chris Daskam because Tim had one more birdie but despite a bogey (for 35 points) he beat out Chris with one less birdie but no bogey on the card (who ended with 34 points). They shot the same score, but the extra birdie helped propel Tim to the 1 point win. That was the difference maker in this division tonight.Following close behind with good scores of (-7) and 33 points were Aaron Zittnan and Gordon Frater. Following close behind was Jared Jacobson who just last Wednesday aced 2 holes in the same round (a feat I have only ever heard of happening once before) who shot (-6) for 32 points. Shaun Kirchner also had a (-6) but fell short in points because Jared had more birdies despite a few bogies. Again . . . the aggressiveness of making the extra birdies proves to decide part of this division tonight. I hate to discourage consistency, but in this format . . . the bogies hurt less than the birdies help so GO FOR THOSE BIRDIES!

In Recreational we had the top two contenders not come this week . . . Greg Weber (back issue) and Disc Dog (wore out from weekend get-away) but unfortunately for Mark and Nick who were hoping for more points, only one other person showed up this week and. Keegan Wenzler returned after a few weeks away to shot (-6) for 31 points while Nick Williams pulled out a solid (-5) for 29 points and second place. Mark does add a point to his total however because he had already missed two weeks.

As it stands right now . . .

Open: We may have 8 people in the divisional match play if Dave Olson and Dustin Skorupinski come in week 10. It doesn't matter where they finish on the night, they just need to play to qualify and they are in the Match Play where ANYONE CAN WIN THE WHOLE THING! If either or both of them do not come in Week #10 then the #1 and/or #2 seed will end up with a first round bye allowing the lower seeds to battle out who will be playing in the Semifinals (4 players) and eventually the Finals (2 players).

Intermediate: We have 7 people already qualified . . . but one of the players has not shown up the last 3 weeks and I have not heard from him since. I hope he can make it to the match play portion of the league but if not there will be the potential for two other people who need to play the final week (Dan Bertzyk and Collin Kingsbury) to squeeze into the divisional match play. Collin is not guaranteed a spot if Joe B. wants to play in the playoffs because he has a higher point total than is likely reachable, but if Joe B. cannot play or Dan B doesn't show, Collin could be in if he just shows up.

Recreational: The current top 2 seeds (Greg Weber and Disc Dog) decided they were comfortable with wherever they get placed in the match play bracket and did not come this week (although they both did give valid reasons (Bad Back and a long roadtrip weekend). Either way this will be a 4 person divisional match play event where the #1 seed will play the #4 seed and the #2 and #3 will go head to head in week #11 (August 19th). In Week #12 (August 26th) the winners will be battling for the divisional win while the players who lose in the first week will be battling for the third spot and a trophy. Either way this group is very closely concentrated in points and double points night might determine who they play in their matches. It should be interesting!

We had a guest spinner of the wheel of disc-fortune tonight. Steve Taylor took a few spins on the wheel and finally ended on CTP Week. That means next week is Stableford and Week #10 is DOUBLE POINTS SINGLES. You do not want to miss the last week if you are jockeying for position in the bracket for the Match Play portion of the league. Just remember anyone who makes the Match Play Bracket can win their entire division. Even if you are the 8 seed you can take down the top spot, you just have to out strategize and out play your opponents.

As I said before, even if you do not make it to the match play bracket I encourage you to still show up in Weeks 11 and 12 *August 19th and 26th) and I will get you paired up with someone else who wants to see what Match Play is all about.

In Open this week the top card was a heated battle. There was a 3 way tie for first at (-13) between Scott Slauson, Brad Weber, and TJ Webber. TJ Missed his birdie on #1 so he ended up in 3rd and Scott ended up beating Brad to take first this week. Oddly enough Scott ended up with only $3 in CTP's which if you examine that closely that means he made a lot of birdies but was forced to make longer putts than others. If you have not played with Scott before I recommend watching him putt from 35+ feet. He is by far one of the better jump putters around and seemingly is more likely to make a 40' putt than a 30' putt. That might be an exaggeration but I have seen him make so many long jump putts in all of my rounds with him, that it certainly feels like that is the case. Brad and TJ both ended up with $4 in CTP's while Joel Kamoske (-12) ended up with the most CTP's with $5. On the second card Dustin Skorupinski (-8) ended up with 6 CTP's for $4, Bob Bawden (-7) had the most CTP's (7) for $5 and I had a rough night (-5) but still managed to get 5 CTP's for $3.

Scott, Brad, TJ, Joel, Me, and Bob are qualified for the Match Play while Dustin S., Aaron S., Dave O. all need to play the last 2 weeks to qualify for the match play otherwise the bracket will be just us 6 players. That means the #1 and #2 seeds will get first round byes.

In Intermediate the top card saw Greg Klein shoot the hot round again (-9) while taking home $3.50 in CTP's. Jared Jacobson cleaned house on the CTP's with $7 while shooting a (-6). Pat Brah also shot (-6) but ended up with $5.50 in CTP's. Shaun Kirchner shot a (-5) for $3.50 in CTP's. On the second card we saw the second best Intermediate score from Chad Niezgoda (-7) who is relishing the role of spoiler. He goes home with only $2.50 in CTP's because of Jared's solid driving tonight. Aaron Zittnan ended up with $3.50 in CTP's while shooting a (-4). Chris Daskam managed $2.50 in CTP's for his (-3).

Greg, Pat, Shaun, Jared, Aaron, Chris, and Joe B. are already qualified for the Match Play but there is room for one more person. Dan B. and Collin K. are the only two people who can still get into the Match Play but Joe B. better be careful or he might miss out if both of them attend one more week and play well since only the Top 8 people who qualify get to play.

In Recreational we had all of our regulars attend this week. Greg Weber shot a solid Intermediate level round (-7) while playing on the Women's card so he walks away with all 18 CTP's for $4. Mark Olver ended up the big winner in Recreational with his $5 in CTP's for his (-4) round. Disc Dog also shot (-4) and takes home $4 in CTP's. Nick Williams ended up with a (-1) but still managed $2 in CTP's and Brian Williams who shot (+1) still managed $5 in CTP's.

The Recreational bracket will have four contenders but their seeding is yet to be determined. Right now Greg Weber would be the #1 seed and he would be playing Nick Williams the #4 seed. The other side of the bracket would be Disc Dog #2 seed versus Mark Olver #3 seed. Those seeds can still change especially with Double Points night but as of right now, after dropping the worst two weeks that is how the bracket would line up. Do you like that matchup or do you want to play someone else you think you have an edge over?

The winners of the first round matches would play each other in the finals and the losers would play each other to decide who ends up in 3rd place. Like I said anyone can win it with a hot round so bring your A game and bring your strategery. You can do it!

In the Women's division tonight we had Cassandra Brah shooting (+10) and taking $2.50 in CTP's while Loriena had a (+15) but still was able to get $1.50 in CTP's.

Ethan Weber had a (+35) but it is good to see him showing up every week.

We have one more spin of the wheel this week and it will determine if we play CTP or Stableford this week and the other format will be played next week in week 9. Week 10 will be the last jockeying for position with DOUBLE POINTS Singles so you do not want to miss that week because it will determine your fate in the bracket for the Match Play in Weeks 11 and 12.

Keep in mind even if you do not make it into the bracket, you can still attend league on August 12th and August 19th . . . we will pair everyone up with a match so that they can experience how great Match Play can be. There will still be a weekly payout for everyone who plays and wins their match so there is still something riding on the round.

The first few spins of the wheel were done by different people and all landed on events we have already played. Finally on the 4th spin Scott Slauson landed on Dealer's Choice. He decided to make the Double Points week be skins game. I heard him later doubting his decision and thought he should have done Alternate Tees instead. Once he called it out, it was decided however so Skins Game it was. I figured it would have been Skins Game, CTP week, or Alternate Tees as those seem to be highly embraced league formats in this league.

In Open we saw a lot of carryovers on both cards. I would expect that to happen a lot more in the upper divisions because anyone can deuce any hole on any day. On the Top Card we saw TJ Webber with the hot round (-13) of the night and he was rewarded with 10 skins for $9. Scott Slauson had the worst round (-9) on the top card but still managed to get 7 skins for $6 because he hit 1 big putt in the 3 hole playoff. I would say that is pressure putting! Joel Kamoske (-11) also took home 1 skin for $1 while Brad Weber was shutout in skins despite tying for 2nd place overall (-11) in Open.

On the second card we saw only 4 holes won outright just like the top card. I hit a skin on #4 after we pushed the first three holes and also a 5 hole playoff carryover for a total of 9 skins and $8 while tying for second on the card (-9). Bob Bawden ended up with an 8 hole carryover worth $6. Dave Olson tied me (-9) and unfortunately ended up with only 1 skin. Chris Onopa was somehow shutout of the skins despite the best round on the card (-11).

TJ moves up the ladder with his outright win and he helped distance himself this week from the others because there was a three way tie for 2nd as well as 5th. He may be sitting in 4th place right now but the points he is dropping are a lot smaller than the guys at the top right now so the contest for the top 4 seeds in the match play bracket is going to be interesting.

In Intermediate on the top card we saw the biggest skin winner ever Pat Brah take down 17 skins on 2 holes (14 and a 3) while shooting a solid (-7) for $11.00 FM. Then Shaun Kirchner got the remaining skin on the card for $1 FM. Greg Klein ended up shut out of the skins but he still remains atop the leaderboard for the division. That 1 seed might even earn him a bye if we do not end up with 8 eligible players, so he will look to rebound next week and maintain his overall lead.

On the second card we saw another large Skin winner in Aaron Zittnan who managed to muster a (-8) with 15 skins where he won 4 holes outright. Jared Jacobson was only 1 throw behind Aaron but walks away with just two skins worth $2. Collin Kingsbury who ended up (+1) on the night gets $1 FM for the 1 skin he won when he birdied #18. Chris Daskam had a close to his average round (-4) but walks away empty handed in the skins.

In Recreational we saw Disc Dog taking 9 skins worth $8.50 FM by winning 3 holes outright on his way to a (-2). Only 1 throw behind him were Greg Weber (-1) and Mark Olver (-1). Greg ended up with 4 skins on two holes to take home $3.50. Mark Olver ended up with 2 skins for $1.50 while Nick WIlliams who shot (Even) ended up with 3 skins for $2.50. That is competitive in score, competitive in skins, and competitive in the point totals for the first 7 weeks of league. The Recreational division looks to have what will be a small bracket for the matchplay but any of those 4 could walk away with the victory with 2 really good rounds. I suggest getting yourself into the #1 seed just in case because it might earn you a first round bye if 5 or more people are eligible for the Match Play portion of the league. Right now Only Keegan Wenzler and Billy Barnes can join the Match Play portion if they come the last 3 weeks of league, otherwise it will be the 4 of you (assuming Mark makes it a minimum of 1 more week, Greg, Disc Dog, and Nick are already qualified) battling it out the final 2 weeks of league in the Match Play. I will enjoy that immensely because it has been so close so far.

I am headed home tomorrow after spending Saturday and Sunday playing and trying to get one of my business ventures off the ground. I have been able to accomplish both, 6 courses played, and one business meeting handled. I am hopeful it will turn into something for this year when I had just about written off 2013. I am excited for the opportunity to promote disc golf and the event should be a lot of fun to run also. Wish me luck in getting the details ironed out quickly!

The Wheel of DIsc-Fortune returns this week after settling on Alternate Tees as a mandated week last week. We could be playing CTP week, Stableford, or the Dealer's Choice where the spinner of the wheel could select any of the other formats we have played. I still think that Skins Game will be the format of choice but Alternate Tees seemed to be very popular too.

As for this weeks recap . . .

In Open we had a tie at the top (slightly off of the normal winner scores) with Joel Kamoske and Dave Olson tying for the win at (-10). Joel went on to win the CTP playoff. TJ Webber, Scott Slauson, and Bob Bawden all tied with (-9) to take the last of the cash.

In Intermediate we had Chris Daskam with a really solid round (-8) to take down the division, while Shaun Kirchner and Aaron Zittnan (-5) had respectable rounds (given the circumstances) to take the rest of the funny money.

In Recreational we had Greg Weber (-4) have a solid round on a course I feel honestly played 3-4 throws easier. Second place goes to Nick Williams only 1 throw back but overall Greg and Nick are tied for the win. More important than the weekly win seemed to be the points totals. Greg knew the stats better than I did because he realized when he won the round tonight over Nick that he was going to tie him up in the point standings. Nice work Greg . . . maybe this is your season. Keep in mind in Matchplay ANYTHING can happen.

In Juniors . . . Ethan Weber (+22) continues to show his diligence by coming each week. Can anyone hook me up with someone locally.

The ACEPOOL was hit by me for a grand total of $16 from this week. On #5 I threw a Mako right straight at the basket with a slight anhyzer to hold the line and it went straight in and dropped to the basket. Then Chris Daskam proceeded to step up and also make a good bid for the Ace pool. He came up just short of having to split the small $16 ace pool. Either way this format was a lot of fun to watch and throw with a mix of longer holes coupled with some short ace runs and modified "Upshots".

Well we had a nice ace pool going this week after 4 weeks of noone hitting an ace and Greg Weber decided it was his turn. He took home $90, but I owe him another $1 because I had not written down one persons entry fee. Congratulations Greg!

In Open.. . . 1 disc night seemed to play about a throw or two harder than a normal night. We had Scott Slauson defeat Joel Kamoske (-11) in a playoff to take first and second this week. Then followed a few shots behind them were Brad Weber and TJ Webber with (-8). Bob Bawden and I had to split the last remaining cash with (-7).

In Intermediate we had Greg Klein with a solid and better than his average score (-9) to win the division. Shaun Kirchner also posted a score better than his average with a (-8). Aaron Zittnan and Dan Bertzyk tied with (-5) and Chris Daskam (-4) was just 1 throw behind them for the last of the funny money.

In Recreational we saw a personal best round by Keegan Wenzler (-9) while his previous scores put him right in line with the top end of Recreational. He just had one heck of a week with a disc he bought from me before the round. I have more of these so called "Magical" discs if anyone else wants to try to set their personal bests and I would never tell a lie . . . I always tell the TRUTH! In second behind Keegan was Greg Weber who apparently had some trouble calming down after the ace but still had a decent round (-1). Then Nick Williams followed up with a round of (E) for the last of the funny money.

Ethan Weber also had an excellent round in the juniors especially considering it was 1 disc night. Thanks for paying for you and your dad . . . I hope you got your $10 back plus a little extra piece of that ace pool. I would think 10% is fair so $9.00.

Perhaps those of you who did better than normal with 1 disc should consider that in future rounds. I do know some people who carry a smaller bag at VV because it avoids confusion and makes you throw less discs. I personally think that I play much better (I would venture to guess 1-2 throws better) with more discs and rather than manipulating the discs to do what they aren't "supposed" to do, that I let the different discs do all the work. Other people seem to have an easier time throwing less discs and making them fly differently. You just have to find what works for you and stick to it!

The ace pool is again rising . . . who will be coming out and playing for points and who will be playing for the ace pool. It would be one heck of a conundrum if we hit CTP week this week because it would be a tough decision to go for the CTP's or just run for aces. I hit the largest ace pool I can remember at Terrys Wednesday league this past spring ($222) and I was running at aces the whole time so it obviously worked. Can you figure out the difference in technique of running for aces rather than trying to park every shot for a drop in duece?

Either way we are set for another fun and unique week of league since we don't even know what the format will be yet. I hope you are all recovered from the Holiday weekend by then so you can join in the fun .. .and maybe walk off with the ace pool (well maybe just half if I have anything to say about it!)

So tonight was Putters Only . . . some people love it some people hate it and it is clear that some people know how to throw putters different ways since their scores were at or above their normal average while others suffered a tough night.

In Open we had Joel Kamoske shooting (-12) to take home top cash tonight. There was a tie between Brad Weber and Scott Slauson at (-10) but Scott also took home the top Open CTP prize. I shot a (-9) which I am thrilled with considering I was only -1 through 7 holes and TJ Webber ended up taking the last cash spot. Aaron Schultz got on the board with the 2nd place CTP.

In Intermediate we saw the Division Leader Greg Klein tie for the win on the night with Chad Niezgoda (-7). . . you two can playoff next week if you are both in attendance. Joe B. had a good week (-5) to take the next level of funny money, and there was a three way tie between Pat Brah, Jared Jacobson, and Vince Johnson at (-4). Also winning something tonight were two of the people that didn't win anything during the round (AND THAT IS WHY I LOVE ADDING THE CTP OR SIDEGAMES) with Dan Bertzyk taking home the first CTP and Aaron Zittnan taking home the second place CTP.

In Recreational we had the usual suspects playing again this week . . . we all missed you last week Mark and are happy you are feeling better. Disc Dog hit an incredible sidearm putt from the SHULE on the left of #9 which got him below par (-1) and he deserves the top funny money prize this week from what I saw from the group behind him. Tying for the next spot was Greg Weber and Nick Williams (+2) but Greg also won the CTP.

In Juniors, I would like to thank Ethan Weber for coming out tonight. I would love to encourage more women and juniors to come out and play I just am unsure of how to go about it. if you have any ideas please let me know and I will do what I can to promote those divisions as much as possible.

I also got an email from the parks department manager when I returned home . . . he said he will let me know when they start hauling chips. I would assume that this means after this weekend but I am hopeful it is soon. We need about 10-15 truck loads to really make the whole course playable. We still have a ton of mulch in the parking lot above the course that we can use . . . but it is not very efficient when 1 person could dump 3-5 yards at a time in specific locations for us to spread out.

The Skins Game seemed to be a very popular format. I found it interesting that it actually caused people to cheer for one another from time to time to tie and push the skin to the next hole. We actually had a group watch our Hole #7 because they knew 7 skins were on the line.

In Open I had the hot round of the night with (-12) and got $7.75 in skin money. Scott Slauson also got $7.75 in skin money for his (-11) because he was in the other group. Brad Weber got $2.50 in skins with a solid (-10) but he was playing against the top Open players and beating Slauson was tough.Bob Bawden found a way to get $4.00 in skins even though he was 2 shots behind Brad. He just had good holes when others didn't. Dave Olson, Peter Ralph, and Aaron Schultz also walked away with $2.75 each and Joel Kamoske got $1.75.

In Intermediate Aaron Zittnan walks away with $9 in skin money with his (-11), Greg Klein gets $8 for his (-7) while Pat Brah ended up with $7 for his (-7). Joe B must have had a tough group because he shot (-6) but only got $2 worth of skins while Chris Daskam ended up with a (-5) and won $10 in funny money. Shaun Kirchner tied Chris at (-5) but only got $2 in skins. Chad Niezgoda and Jared Jacobson also got $1 in skins money.

Unfortunately, we still have not brought in another woman to the league. I was hoping that we might get someone to compete with Cassandra. Have you all mentioned it to your significant others?

MULCH SPREADING
Shaun Kirchner, Brian Williams, Nick Williams, Pat Brah, Billy Barnes and myself were out at VV today for about 4 hours hauling mulch with Shauns 4-wheeler and trailer. We were able to do the paths between 11 basket and 12 tee (through the woods), and from 12 basket to 13 tee as well as around #11 long, #10 short left, and #8 Left . . . so we also moved those baskets into the newer locations. I am hopeful that the parks department can begin placing some piles of mulch soo so we have full use of this course the rest of the summer.

UPCOMING WEEK
The Alternate Tees format is not playable again this week . . . we hauled a bunch of mulch today in order to move some baskets and get rid of some muddy spots. I am hopeful to get some mulch placed and bricks in the ground to more easily mark the alternate tees before we play that format. I think I might have some time this coming 4th of July weekend.

Well . . . this new and experimental format was met with mixed reviews . . . I personally thought we would have a whole lot more action on the points. I also thought that almost everyone would get some points . . . unfortunately I was one of the people who got blanked so I know how "NOT FUN" this format was for many of you. Some of it may have been the wind and some of it may have been the awkward distances of 100-125'. Either way I think we need to do some tweaking of the format to make sure it is both fun and unique. I will take all criticism and compliments and use it to make sure this format gets adjusted for the future . . . or if it gets removed completely.

ON TO THE RECAP:

In Open we had the hot shooting Scott Slauson with 2 points for one basket hit taking down a lot of money for just 1 shot . . . but it was better than the other open players . . . some of that comes down to deciding if you are running at the basket or trying to layup for a guaranteed drop in. In this format if you are laying up for a drop in you are playing it incorrectly . . . all that matters in this format is hitting metal of any kind so don;t be afraid to make some firm runs at the basket. In second we had a three way tie between Brad Weber, TJ Webber, and Dustin Skorupinski for the last of the cash in open with pole hits (1 point) by each of them.

In Intermediate we had Pat Brah with a LEAGUE DOMINATING 10 points with an ace, two basket hits and a pole hit. Following close behind was Greg Klein with 7 points with two basket hits and a chains hit. Jared Jacobson was only 1 point back with an Ace and a pole hit. Dan Bertzyk with a chains hit and a basket hit for 5 points was just behind. Then Collin Kingsbury and Shaun Kirchner each had a pole hit for 1 point to split the last of the funny money.

In Recreational we had Mark Olver with an Ace and a chains hit for 8 points. Brian Williams had an Ace for 5 points and the last of the funny money. Congratulations gentlemen!

In the Women's Division Cassandra did better than any other woman at league tonight so she will bring home a little funny money for attending while all the other women stayed home . . . :(

Maybe we could get some of the other DOLLS to come to MANIC MONDAYS . . . I can certainly accommodate the women. Valley View is better than Estabrook for women (In my opinion) and I have reduced fees to try and entice some more women to come play. If the women wanted to attend Manic Mondays and pay $1 to the course but not play for any money . . . I would also be fine with that . . . I just would love to see a small group of women at every league out there, so invite your lady friends.

I am thinking about not allowing Alternate Tees next week to make sure that people are ok with that type of setup. I think it is fun and a great idea but if others feel like the setup is goofy or not fun . . . I am ok to try and find another format. Just give me your feedback. I am doing this league for you all and I want as many people to have fun as possible so if anything is not well received I am completely fine figuring out something else that works. I can take all criticism . . . in fact criticism is easier for me to take than compliments so bring it on. Give me your honest feedback! Was the Ace Race worth keeping and would the alternate tee setup be fun for everyone?

I will have to make sure those areas are easy to find possibly even 8 weeks from now but I plan to draw up an Map to show people where these tees are. For right now you are free to find the tees and practice but please be courteous to other disc golfers playing the normal course as well as non disc golf walkers because they will not be accustomed to seeing us in some of these tee areas.

Let them walk through before throwing and let faster groups play through . . . don't be afraid to tell them why you are throwing from these spots and invite them to Manic Mondays!

Well, we kicked off Manic Mondays Summer Edition with a beautiful night for disc golf. 26 people were in attendance. No Ace was hit so there will be $26 in the Ace Pool next Monday.

We saw a handful of people move up because of my new way of grouping people . . . the PDGA rating system just does not work at Valley View. I went with scoring average as the way to place people in divisions. Open should be averaging (-8) or better. Intermediate should be shooting (-4) to (-8). Recreational should be shooting (E) to (-4) and Novice should be shooting higher than (E) par on average.

In Open we saw Scott Slauson with the hot round of (-14). Brad Weber and Joel Kamoske ended up shooting (-10) for a tie for second. TJ Webber with just another solid (-9) and Todd Farnham and Bob Bawden shooting (-8) to split the last cash.

In Intermediate we had Greg Klein and Jared Jacobson tie with (-9) and if they are both present next week you can play that tie off if you would like. Pat Brah remained competitive by shooting a (-6) and Dan Bertzyk, James Barnes, and Shaun Kirchner shot (-5) to split the last cash also.

In Recreational we had Nick WIlliams with a (-5) to take the division this week, Disc Dog and Keegan Wenzler both shot (-4) to tie for second and Mark Olver shot a (-2) for the last of the funny money payouts.

I stepped it up a notch, however, adding 3 other formats (Skins Game, Alternate Tees, and an Ace Race). Then to top it off I added 2 more weeks of league focussed on an awesome format called Match Play. Basically if you qualify with a minimum # of weeks played (and you finish in the top 8 points winners) you will be entered into a match play bracket to settle your final league standings. There is a minimum # of rounds required to qualify but 6 out of 10 weeks should allow the competition to be fierce.
