With no aces in the Throwdown tournament, we decided to donate the $176 ace pot to our Charity Tournament Partner, the Educational Disc Golf Experience (EDGE). We also raised $510 for EDGE with the EDGE prize package raffle, won by Curtis Spence.
That means the Throwdown Hoedown and Disc Golf Symposium donate at least $676 towards EDGE curricula and programs in Pennsylvania.

Throwdown 2017 Handicap System

An “Ideal” team is made up of one player from each of the following divisions: Woman, Rec <899, Master 40+, Open.
In an effort to keep the handicapping easy and fair we have set the “scratch” team rating at 3600 (Open 970 + Master 930 + Woman 830 + Rec 870 = 3600).

Teams whose roster members’ combined player ratings are below 3600 will have their team score reduced by 90% of the difference between the team’s combined rating and the scratch team rating. Teams rated higher than 3600 will have their scores increased by 100% of the difference between their team rating and the scratch rating. One stroke for each seven points will be used for the compression factor.
As an incentive to field an “Ideal” team, one stroke per player will be deducted from the ideal team’s score for Round 1 Singles, and one stoke per pair will be deducted from the ideal team’s score for Round 2 Doubles.
Players who do not have an established PDGA rating will be assigned a rating based on league averages or average score relative to other team members.

Team A Example: Woman = 840, Rec = 765, Master = 895, Open = 945; Team A rating = 3445.
Team A rating is below the scratch, so 3600 – 3445 = 155 handicap. With a seven-point compression, the handicap would be 22 (155/7=22.1).
90% of 22 is 20, so Team A would have 20 strokes deducted from their combined score for the first round and 10 strokes deducted from their combined doubles team scores for the second round. If Team A is also an Ideal team, their handicap would be 24 for the first round and 12 for the second round.

Team B Example: Woman = 935, Rec = 890, Master = 975, Open = 1000; Team B rating = 3800
Team B is above the scratch, so 3600 – 3800 = -200 handicap. With a seven-point compression, the handicap would be 29 (200/7=28.6)
100% of 29 is 29, so Team B would have 29 strokes added to their combined score for the first round and 14 strokes added to their combined doubles team scores for the second round. If Team B is also an Ideal team, their handicap would be reduced to 25 for the first round and 12 for the second round.

Format
Round One: Singles. The board will be sorted randomly by division with no two players from the same team on the same card. Each team’s first round Singles scores will be combined. The accumulated team score will be adjusted by their team handicap.
Round Two: Alternate Drive/Best Shot Doubles. In advance of the second round, teams form themselves into two pairs. Pairs decide which partner will tee off for the team on the first hole and then alternate tee shots for the rest of the round. Best shot format after the drive. Second round grouping will be determined by adjusted first round scores with no two pairs from the same team on the same card. In the instance of ties after the first round, the team with the lower rating will be put on the higher card.
Total: Combined team score of the singles and doubles +/- handicap will determine the Overall winner.

Two exciting announcements today about the March 4-5 Throwdown Hoedown and Disc Golf Club Symposium:

1. We've partnered with the Educational Disc Golf Experience (EDGE) as a Charity Tournament Partner! This means that a percentage of the proceeds from the weekend will go toward funding EDGE resources being spent in Pennsylvania schools and recreation programs.
We will be raffling off a cool pile of EDGE merchandise to help us toward a goal of donating $1000 to get disc golf curriculum in physical education classes.

2. We have room for ONE more 4-person team to play in the Throwdown tournament on Saturday March 4. First team to get registered on the waitlist will get in.

We encourage individuals and clubs that are coming to the Throwdown Hoedown weekend to bring these items with them to Camp KonOKwee:
1. Club merchandise, unique disc golf equipment and/or other items related to our sport that can be sold/swapped or traded at the Flymart in Kramer Hall during the Saturday evening Hoedown. It is FREE to Hoedown and VIP ticket holders. Just let us know that you want a table to display your wares (reply "Yes" to the Flymart option when you register, post here, or send J. Gary a message)
2. One gently-used beginner friendly disc to donate to kids and camp users at YMCA Camp KonOKwee. We all probably have a old putter or understable midrange disc that we have grown out of. A collection of discs donated to the camp will pay it forward for the next generation of disc golfers and our excellent relationship with KonOKwee.

Request For Proposals: Regional Disc Golf Club Symposium

The Pittsburgh Flying Disc Society is hosting a March 4-5, 2017 weekend retreat for regional disc golf clubs in PA/OH/WV/NY/MD at Camp KonOKwee north of Pittsburgh. The goals of the "Throwdown Hoedown" weekend are to promote equity in our disc golf community, strengthen the leadership and membership of our clubs, and provide fun, competitive formats for disc golf play.

We are seeking proposals and presenters for two 20-minute large group (40 people) sessions and four 40-minute small group (10-20 people) sessions for disc golf promoters, event directors, club leaders and players. Topics could include, for example: promoting women in disc golf, how and why to incorporate your disc golf club, charity partnerships, youth disc golf, and running a state disc golf hall of fame.

Proposals should include a description of what the audience will learn from the session, strategies for audience engagement (a talking head is not enough), audio/visual needs (self-sufficiency is helpful, but we can provide some support), swag or takeaways for participants, and a short biography of presenter(s).

Informative, participatory and motivating presentations and presenters selected will be given VIP treatment for the weekend including catered meals, modern accommodations, a spot on the Presenters team at the Throwdown tournament, and guaranteed fun for entire weekend.

Excited to hear the buzz about the club team competition! We are finalizing the format for the 36-hole event for when registration opens 1/9/17.

As you are planning your teams, understand that one of the goals of the weekend it to promote equity in our disc golf community with ideal teams of 1 open, 1 master, 1 woman, and one U900 player. Teams that bring the ideal roster will earn a bonus deduction from their team score. We will also use handicaps based on PDGA player ratings to level the playing field. If a player does not have a PDGA rating, we will honor the team's best estimate for their player.
