There has not been any chatter in this group for about 3 years, so I was wondering if it is still active at all? I have just returned to playing tournaments, mainly as MP60+, and I'm constantly on the lookout for other similar aged players to join me at the events I'm planning on attending so that we can get at least 3 players. The next two I am currently registered for are: Green Lake Open (B) - Interlochen (https://www.discgolfscene.com/tournaments/Green_Lake_Open_2024), the River City Open-Pros (A) - Brewer Park (https://www.discgolfscene.com/tournaments/River_City_Open_Pro_2024), and the Michigan Masters (C) - Reed Co Park (https://www.discgolfscene.com/tournaments/Michigan_Masters_2024). I will "move up" to MP50/MP55...very reluctant but I might be convinced to go MP40+..currently rated 864 so I'd have to shoot the lights out to stand a chance in that one. I've got an entire store full of discs so at this point I have no interest in playing Am anymore. Anyone out there?

Played the Polk County Open in Florida this past weekend, and got absolutely spanked by a fellow Michiganian, Wes Steer. Wes was on fire for the first round shooting a 1014 rated 49 on the very technical Hidden Oaks DGC. I think he only missed his line once from the teepad, and his putter was on fire! The Discraft Michigan State Championships on Sept. 5 and 6 has already drawn together a good number of Masters + players. The registration remains open for folks with berths through Aug.28. Pool A (pro) and Pool E (am) include the Masters+ divisions. They are well below the pool maximums at this point, so the opportunity for those without berths occurs via the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) event. That event is scheduled for Sept.4 (in PM), with pre-registration ending Sept.3 at 2pm. The need to actually play on Friday may be avoided where the combined number of Berth pre-registrations, LCQ pre-registrations and DAY-OF registrations is below the cap. Choosing to register for the LCQ, but not play it, depends on your calculation of the total pre-registrations for your pool, and some speculation about the number of day-of LCQ registrations that are likely to occur. A smaller margin below the pool max creates a greater risk that day-of LCQ registrations will edge a non-player out. (A non-player who has pre-registered would be given a score like "999". That could be the worst score, but still good enough, being under the cap.) PEOPLE WHO REGISTER FOR THE LCQ AND BELIEVE IT IS SAFE TO AVOID THE FRIDAY PLAY CAN FIND INFO ON THE EVENT PAGES AND SEEK THE ADVICE OF KEITH ATEN CONCERNING PREPAYMENTS FOR THE MAIN EVENT.

In a recent exchange connected to a masters and older only tournament, the possibility of combined divisions was raised. Making something like that acceptable to people with 30 years and 100 rating points between them challenges our ingenuity. Let's collectively imagine how something could be done to make it possible. "Handicapping" comes to mind, but, I have no clue as to how that works.

Hey Old timers, My GF is on me to live down south a month or two in the winter. Next year I told her we could rent some place down south where it is warm for a month. From what she tells me you have to put a deposit down a year ahead of time. With that said where would be somewhere warm where she would be happy and I could throw some discs and minimize getting bit by a reptile. You all know I like throwing into the brush. :o)

Sure has been an awful lot of Masters and Grand Masters from the west side of the state signing up for tourneys, then either bailing, changing divisions, or showing up at other tourneys on the same day as the one they bailed on. This leaves the division in limbo and causes other players who do show up to switch. Sometimes the division you want to switch to, was on a the previous day! Come On Men!!

I neglected to identify the potentially competing tournaments this year. That may have been less critical due to the schedules for PDGA events. Craig points to another possible function of the MM&M club; that is, giving players improved probability for age divisions when they consider their choice of tournaments over a season. This would involve a 2015 pre-season review of the choices and some consensus building among club members. There will be different levels of readiness to travel and other real-world considerations. Alternative views about where the focus should be will need to be tolerated. I'll "get the disc rolling" with a couple ideas for identifying tournaments next year: 1) find two A-tier tournaments you could attend, 2) find four B-tier tournaments, 3) find two C-tier tournaments, and 4) find one unsanctioned tournament and make your case as to why members should attend. Bear in mind that 2015 world amateur championships is in the Kalamazoo area. We will hopefully focus on that for a good showing of MM&M members.

We've got 3 Pro Grand Masters and 1 AM Grand Master signed up for the MnM Series #1, "Near Wild Heaven", 4/26 at Manton, which is a PDGA C Tier and a J-Bird Series event. I am willing to switch to MPG, MG1, MM1, or MPM to accommodate players in any of these divisions. Also running a "double shot" side game for players who play this event and the Quinvitational, 4/27 at Ludington, a little more than an hour away from Wild Haven.

The 2014 Vibram Birdie Bash at Knollwood in Kalamazoo is coming up on May 17th! $30 gets you two Vibram discs, a dry fit shirt, a towel, and a Vibram mini!

Last year's Birdie Bash was an extreme success and I hope to see everyone there, the money raised from this tournament will go toward finishing up the installation of tee pads and tee signs.

Sunday Nov.3 at 10am. BELLE ISLE DGC, Detroit. Tournament to keep hope alive for a permanent course no matter how the political issues are resolved. Sport transcends these differences. Yesterday at Blue Gill the Old Guys Draw Dub's game was held; thanks to Joe Gill and Chuck DeVries, and 14 other great guys 46 or older. My extra treat was seeing Adam Weiss and Ray Hart. They were part of my earliest league: Royal Oak, Wagner Park, c.1984. (pre- Motor City Chain Gang).
The "OG Dubs" is the latest iteration of a dubs game that Chuck started recently. This 2013 event was won by Joe Gill who received the first trophy given. It was unanimously decided that each year the trophy would be produced on-the-spot, taking one of the winner's own playing discs, marking it "OG Dubs Champ", and having all players sign it. Each year a course is selected. The format this year was card-draw then 24 holes, lunch, "old school" flip for second partner then 12 holes.
I was happy to contribute a little in each round, but my redemption came when I admitted to having a BFA from Wayne State. That lead to my being given Joe's disc and a black marker. It was an honor to do the first trophy. I'll try to get to the 2014 game and bring some markers/designs. The keynote comments came from Don Stephens who gave voice to every player's joy in the game and the people who play it.
Noteworthy to MM&M members is the presence of leadership in Michigan for events that celebrate those players whose experience shows in the wrinkled faces and the smooth responses to the ups and downs of the game. I will keep this event in mind as an addition to my amateur schedule next year.

My 1st event at my new course, Wild Haven in Manton, will have Masters divisions, both pro and am. Saturday, October 5th. Camping available on site, night golf is in the forecast too. The four guys signed up so far are all at least masters age, and are pretty flexible about playing either pro or am. Two of us are too young to play GM or older though :)

I have some upcoming unsanctioned events that are very Masters friendly, I use a format of singles for the 1st round, doubles for the 2nd round, partners based on scores from round 1: highest with lowest, 2nd highest with 2nd lowest, and so on. Tried this at Whitehall earlier this year and three of the top 6 were guys masters age or older. Events are:
Wild-Koondog-Capsule Invitational, Wild Haven, Manton, MI 8/17
Wild About Disc Fun(d) Raiser, River Road, Petoskey, MI 9/21

Also, I should have at least an Am Masters division at the M.I.T. at Wild Haven, Oct 5th (B-Tier). I know at least 2 other Am Masters that will be there.

New Layout & 20 new baskets for Old Course in AuGres - wanna help ? The status of the course is WET !!! July 4th is the target date to have the baskets in and hopefully have a dry course to play. NO MORE RAIN !!! But the good news is that 4 of the 9 new holes are cut and ready for more hands to help with brush and log removal. Anybody that might want to help is welcome, bring friends, boots, gloves, trimmers, rakes and BUG SPRAY. Thus far there have been 4 different volunteers show up and course designer Ron Peludat has plans to have ALL 9 fairways cut by this time next week (weather permitting). Please, anybody that can make a trip to help, call Ron first and make certain that it is a work day -989-876-4155. Ron's plans are to be out there working everyday possible. Be aware, because of the wet entrance area, you will need to take a 10 minute walk back to the area where the work is taking place and you'll need to haul in equipment, water and etc. You may even want to bring a sled to haul stuff in, unless you arrive with a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Some of the volunteers do have 4 wheel drive so when they are there, you'll have a ride in and out for your equipment.
