Hi Andy, I'm not part of the organization anymore but I'm taking the liberty to answer a few of the points you brought up in the chat. First, for the “less popular” divisions as you say, those spots were filled but they got 3 cancellations in the last few days so why not give it time to see if they can fill these spots again. In the last couple of years in Quebec, there is a valiant effort from Tds to put forth the junior and female divisions. As for the caps, I was the first in Quebec to use that system, which is widely used in Canada, if it wasn't for these caps, the event would have been 85 % MA2 and MA40. In a season-long series like the Circuit, it is beneficial to have a better distribution to create divisional battles. I do agree that we have to come up with a solution soon and I believe this will go through a 2-day event where MPO, MP40, MA1 and FA1 play 1 day and MA40, FA40, MA2, FA2 and MJ15 play on the second day, but to achieve that, we have to let the organizers time to build a solid volunteers base. I know what they're trying to do. Chris is trying to do the same thing here in VT by letting women and juniors sign up a day early. The problem is that it just doesn't work. You only get more women and juniors playing by getting them involved in the sport through casual rounds first, not by reserving tournament spots. This simply creates an advantage for the few at the expense of the many. If you want more juniors and women playing tournaments, then get more hooked on the sport outside of tournaments. This is the only way those demographics will truly grow. It also actually hurts the points series aspect as most of your players will now not be able to get into 5 tournaments in a single division. This is the worst possible registration system and should be avoided at all costs! I was actually drawn to want to play in Quebec this year because of the huge MA40 participation. It's very disappointing to see the popularity of the sport amongst people of my age and ability being treated as though it's a problem instead of a blessing.

I'm super excited to finally be playing in Quebec again! I somehow managed to get into the second tournament even though 20% of my division was given away before registration even opened for some reason. This supply-side economics system is failing once again, so I'd like to ask my previous question again. What happens if these spots don't fill?

If what you are suggesting is to have people sign up, over for example, a 3-day time period, for perhaps a token fee, and then place everyone who entered into a lottery system by division, this would create quite a lot of extra work for the volunteers who run each and every event, and would have many people losing money as certain things on PayPal and/or DGS are non-refundable. If we were to do this for a small fee, we'd get a ton more potential entries due to the low risk and low-fee, but we'd also have players who jump in just on the off-chance they might be available to go that day. This creates a system where a lot of players would have to be partially refunded, and again creates more work for the volunteer, and more $ that fizzles out of existence. Food for thought...

Thanks, Don, for your observations, based on lots of experience. I agree that a method that does not overly tax the good folks who run tournaments is a requirement! (but this tournament will be having to process a lot of refunds, it looks like!). Anyhow I guess it is good to have problems due to the explosion of interest in DG!

To me, the biggest issue was the division caps attempting to keep nice neat 5-somes of the same division. There is no need to go to such extremes just to avoid a few mixed cards. It's not really fair to the people who signed up right away to sit on a 60+ person waitlist while players in a few select divisions can sign up late and get right in. Even if players were willing to play a different division that hadn't filled, there was no way to transfer your registration over. This also led to an allotment of slots which didn't match the demand. MA2 and MA1 are almost always going to be the largest fields, yet they were both given smaller caps than pro open. It makes no sense! The best practice is just to open registration to everyone on even terms and let the chips fall where they may.
