This issue came up during registration for the Beaver State Fling in Portland, and the TD said that lottery-based registration is no longer allowed for PDGA sanctioned events. I haven't been able to find this rule in writing, but it seems to be a thing. We could do it on the SDGQ side, but not the TPADG side. Their solution was a tiered entry system based on ratings, and this is how many events are run now. But demand was so high for the Portland event that, in the end, nobody under 900 could get in because it filled up before registration opened to the lower rated players. This is great for ensuring the most competitive field possible, but I'm not sure we want to go that route for our local scene here in Quebec. But yeah, as it stands now, the system privileges those who don’t work at night and have the fastest Internet, which is not great either.

Regardless of the time that is selected to open registration, it is going to be a negative factor for at least some players, as shift workers at some locations can be working at any time of the day. However, the time that registration opens is a known factor well in advance, so players also have the option to ask a friend with good internet & time availability. Just a thought.

I think, Don, that a system of pre-registration, open for days (which allows shift workers and the like to preregister), followed by a lottery (if allowed) if more folks preregister than there are spots for, is the most fair. Asking friends is hard if the friend also wants to register! This happened yesterday to a bunch of folks I know, Their friend registered, and then by the time they tried to register the person who could not make it at that time, it was too late (actually it was often too late for both). At the moment it is simply a race, which is hard to see as fair for anyone.

Opening it for days would not solve anything if an event is so popular that it sells out within 5 minutes or so. We ran with progressive entries for Nationals this year, which allowed us to keep divisions open longer for players with pre-qualified ratings.
