A few announcements and important information regarding The Father's Day Fling Tournament this Sunday:
The tournament will be taking place at Woodmansee as planned. While the water filling stations will likely still be there, I decided that we would just have to manage the parking situation and the traffic during the event. Myself and others have put too much work in to the course and in to the planning to let that deter me. I have been at the park the last few evenings and traffic in and out seemed to be slowing so hopefully by Sunday things will have subsided even more.
With this in mind, I have a few announcements and requests.
Parking: Parking at the event will be a challenge since the water filling stations are taking up the majority of spots in the lower parking area.
I am still working on parking alternatives at the retirement home, Winco and Judson Middle school. (I will post an update Saturday)
If you can arrange to carpool to the event please do so. I know a lot of people playing in the tournament know each other so please try to find at least one person to partner with.
Traffic:
There are two holes that throw over the road. 17 and 18. While I will try to have spotters to help look out for traffic, we really don’t have any right to stop cars from driving in and out to and from the Water fill stations so please just be patient, respectful and understanding of this.
Be careful when throwing or walking across roads to be sure cars see you. You will be crossing the road 3 times during the round. Once walking from hole 1 to 2, throwing from tee 17 to 17 basket, and throwing from 18 Fairway to 18 basket.
Speed of play/Course flow: Along with the above traffic challenges, you will need to be mindful of other speed of play issues.
The City came out with an inmate crew and cleaned up a lot of the course we will be playing so you should not have too many issues with lost discs.
Potential trouble holes will be the normal holes 2-8 (numbered 7-13 for the layout) if you get off the fairways. Please use card spotters on these holes and please follow normal lost disc rules. (3 minutes from the point all players are looking)
Other layout "Choke Points" will be the transition from Hole 6 to 7. You will have to walk back up either 6 or 7's fairway to get back to Tee 7. I will likely try to have a course marshal there to assist, but just watch for people throwing from tee 7 after you hole out on 6.
Please give right of way to cards on a higher hole number.
As a general rule; the course should be well marked for tee's, OB's and Mandos and all such rules will apply. All details about each hole will be on the tee signs and each player will have a hole list/description sheet on hand. Any concerns about a ruling should be decided as a card, and/or a provisional shot can be thrown and then brought to my attention for a ruling.
Alcohol and Smoking:
This is a PDGA sanctioned event and it is in a City Park so consumption of alcohol or smoking of any kind (including vape) will not be allowed in the park which includes the parking lot.
This will be a zero tolerance policy so if I see or hear any reports of people violating this rule, I will disqualify you and you will be asked to leave so please do not ask your card if it is OK.
Park Users and Casual Traffic:
Salem City Park regulations prevent us from closing the park or the course for the event.
I do not expect there to be much in the way of casual play and park use on the course but please be respectful of other park users and always give them the right of way.
Most casual players will see the full parking lot and realize there's an event and likely go elsewhere.
Day-of Registrations: If you are paying day of, please bring cash because I will not have a means to take other forms of payment!
I currently have 68 people registered and playing, leaving approximately 12 spots available for day-of registration. I have a list of approximately 20 players who have reached out to me to play so this is the way it will go;
7:30am: I will open "early-bird" registration to the first 12 people who show.
Once I get through that list, I will continue check-in for all registered players.
8:30 am: If you have not registered or checked in by 8:30am, I will give your spot to any remaining players on a first come first served basis up to a total of 80 spots.
I truly appreciate the interest so many people have expressed in playing and I am sorry in advance if I am unable to get you in to the tournament!
Player Packs:
All pre-registered amateur players are guaranteed a players pack which will include a tournament stamped disc and dri-fit style shirt. ($20 Value) Once I reach 72 total players, I can only guarantee a disc.
All pre-registered Pros will receive the shirt and will have the option to buy a disc for $10. The $10 disc purchase will go back in to the pro purse for payouts in each Pro division.
Final thoughts; The Father's Day Fling is a way for the Capital City Disc Golf Club to give back to the members and the disc golf community at large. Running my first PDGA tournament (or any disc golf tournament for that matter!) has been one of the most fun, frustrating, interesting, nerve-racking and rewarding things I have ever done with disc golf. The showing of support for the event, the course, Capital City Disc Golf and me personally has been a source of motivation to try to make this the most fun and successful event possible. I have nothing but gratitude for anyone who has shown their support by registering for the event, helping out with work parties, providing temp baskets, sponsorship's and donations. While there will be challenges to overcome during the event, I will do my best to mitigate these challenges, and if everyone is patient and aware, I feel this event will be a huge success!
I am extremely excited to see everyone compete and look forward to any feedback you have after the event close!
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Stacey Witenberger
