Winter is Over!!!!!! Ok just the DGLA MiCPS-Winter season is over. I thought I had schedule with Mother Nature but it looks and feels like she still wants to play her Winter game.....
Talking about Playing - it was an amazing season, one that we will be talking about for year to come - Remember the snow that lasted for ever and the number of bitter cold rounds of Winter 2014 and even more amazing is that through it all we had more leagues, more players and more rounds played this winter than ever before - You crazy Die Hard Michigan Disc Golfers - I love it!!!!!!!
MiCPS-W Point Series league - 450 total players
32 participating leagues
Well normally I review a bunch of stats before getting to who won the most points and ultimately who is at the top of the leaderboard. I don't think it will be a big surprise who managed to climb to the top of the leaderboard as he has been there for a long while. So who secure the title of Michigan Disc Golf League Champion for the Winter 2014 season?
Well out of 450 Players throughout the state of Michigan participating in leagues this winter - one stands alone at the top of the leaderboard....
45 rounds recorded
22 Wins - 7 weeks in a row at "Eastside Ace Run Winter League"
1 Ace
All to amass an amazing 953 total points and 1st overall
Congratulations Jay B our 2014 Winter Michigan Disc Golf League Champion
Also amazing seasons for may others to include the next two on the overall leaderboard
#2 Justin Dean 28 rounds and 690 Pts.
#3 Scott Sprow 25 rounds and 655 Pts.
Now Jay B and Scott Sprow are both DGLA Player members and on that leaderbaord they are #1 & #2 and besides receiving the largest payout they both are among the first in the state to secure their Berths to the The Discraft Michigan State Championships Saturday, August 30, 2014 - Sunday, August 31, 2014 Mason County Park · Ludington, MI
http://www.discgolfscene.com/tournaments/The_Discraft_Michigan_State_Championships_2014
No need to go up and compete in the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) Friday, August 29, 2014 Mason County Park · Ludington, MI http://www.discgolfscene.com/tournaments/Last_Chance_Qualifier_LCQ_2014
Hopefully you will earn your berth or head up to the last chance qualifier as this event hosted by the MDGO: Michigan Disc Golf Organization (MDGO.Org) is the biggest gathering of Michigan players, and an amazing weekend of disc golf and more. The funniest weekend of Disc Golf ever.
Congrats Jay & Scott - see you guys up in Ludington. I have your berth packages - see you soon.
I have to say in the last few years of watching the stats I have not seen a season dominated in so many categories by one player as this winter. Everyone has to determine what their personal goals are and then how they plan on achieving them. Not everyone can play multiple rounds in a week. Not everyone can make it to the top spot or have the goal to do so. But for those who desire the spot at the top there is a basic formula - Play as many rounds as Possible and Do Well Consistently. Jays stats show he did this very well.
To maximize your fun I suggest getting out to as many different leagues as possible as well. It's great to see friends and make new ones, see new courses and how different clubs run leagues.
You don't have to be a Pro to climb up the leaderboard. You can use me as an example, my spot on the leaderbaord is a result of many fun rounds as often as my family and work will allow which is normally a max of two a week. I get some help from some great double partners - I view the help is more in the form of stress relief and comrade but it also helps with the point total. I enjoy playing with Pros but there is some magic in playing a round with someone new to the sport. I dream of being able to play consistently well but I live for consistently having fun playing no matter what happens - I'm walking on a beautiful Michigan course, throwing plastic with friends and family - and my family grows each year. I still have hopes of getting better but my biggest hope is that I can continue to play and enjoy this sport with all of you for many years to come.
OK in February who are the movers and shakers on the monthly Leaderboards...
Wait - What is this - Jay B is not at the top of a leaderbaord???? Yes I just had to go out and play one more different league to try and top Jay B in this one stat. I wasn't going to reach him on # of rounds, Wins or Points but I could maximize my fun, see some friends and get another league in the month. I also had to break the rules and ask Pete to update the leaderbaord to get a late posted round included in the stats - just so the record would show I bet Jay on this stat. As a reminder the leaderboards lock two days after the last day of the leaderboard period (week or month) and the overall leaderboard locks after 1 week from the last round. and then the Disc Golf Scene Bling - achievements - are awarded and show on your profile page. So league admin please help get the rounds posted so players can get credit for their achievements and as always thanks for all you do to give us all a great way to get out and enjoy this sport in our local area. You guys are the true heroes - Thanks!
Great Month Sam and Jay - I'm always envious of how many leagues you guys play on a regular basis. Good luck this summer - I plan on trying to get to every Michigan league in the MiCPS-Summer at least once - I think we will have some extra awards this summer for reaching the top of these leaderboards - Bring it on....

May 3rd 2014 Saturday - DGLA Player level registration cut-off and deadline for adding new leagues to the Point series.
*********************
If you want to show your support for DGLA and the state-wide point series while getting a great players package and having a shot at MDGO Michigan State Championship berths you need to register as a DGLA player level member by May 3rd. Less than most tournaments gets you a whole season of fun and some return on your season. All 20 of the Winter DGLA Player members are already in for MiCPS-Summer.
League admin - send me the link to your summer league. The cutoff is earlier than previous years so even if your league starts after April 6th and you play rounds before July 26th create your league and send me the link so I can add it into the MiCPS-Summer before the cutoff.
Get out and enjoy these last few winter rounds - this is the season players will be talking about for the next 50 to 100 years - I'm sure the stories will get more interesting as time goes on - Yeah I played in 5 feet of snow at minus 70 throwing up hill on every hole from the ice - those 7 ft ribbon are a bitch ;-)
Peace -&- Enjoy the Rounds.

Sunday April 6th 2014 - Saturday July 26th 2014

OK we are in the 14th week - last week of the MiCPS-Winter 2013-2014 - I think most of us are ready for a warmer fun summer season.....
I got a kick out of week 14 Round leader board - with already 23 players posting rounds the leaderboard starts off with:
All Leaderboards » Rounds Week Fourteen
Player Points Rounds
1 Empty Bag 12 1
1 My back is killing me 8 1
So with an "Empty Bag" you can still play and take 4th place - got to love that unless "My back is killing me".... but even with a sore back he managed to get out and have fun in the cold while collecting more points. I feel your back pain and know your love for the sport - keep throwing it's the best medicine for life......
Thanks guys for a good chuckle on a Monday morning - I needed it ;-)
So yes we are in our final week of the MiCPS-W.
Reminder - Saturday March 1st is the last day for rounds to count for the MiCPS-W. Leagues have one week to post scores or fix anything before the overall leaderboard locks and our Michigan Disc Golf League Champion is crowned March 8th at Midnight.
Can anyone catch Jay B before the end. Not looking likely as Justin Dean and Scott Sprow are the closest with over 200 points to overcome. Just 8 Aces in a week - come on guys I'm puling for yeah ;-)
I'll break down the winning strategies and point out some interesting factoids while drinking some good beer in Germany next week.

Glow Zone's in the House!!!!!
OK it's been a long winter so here is long post to help fill you in on the latest MiCPS-W news as well as some topics related to Michigan Disc Golf I have been asked about often recently.
What topics will I ramble on about in this news post:
MiCPS - Finale?
MDGO & Berth info
Oregon <– O –> Michigan Disc Swap
January weekly and Monthly stats update
* MiCPS - Finale?
Several players have asked about a MiCPS Finale. I was very excited to see the Oregon Players were also interested in how to enhance the OrCPS experience and try and get the top players together for a shoot-out at the end of the season. Rick Saffeels has lead the charge and created the "DGLA (Oregon) Winter Series State Throw Off", http://www.discgolfscene.com/tournaments/DGLA_Winter_Series_State_Throw_Off_2014
Two rounds tournament after the Point Series wraps up, top player invitation, Top finishers in 2nd round playoff. If you like the idea post in the Talk section so we can gauge interest.
In the mean time you can consider another option to help wrap up the MiCPS-W with a Bang in your local area. With a little collaboration and some cooperation you can get a few local leagues to converge at one league and have super league rounds. If you pick a morning league and afternoon league you can really maximize the fun with many more players, and probably a few fair weather players who begin to come out of hibernation and are trying to get back in the swing of the game - Cha Ching $$$
MDGO & Berth info
Discraft Michigan Disc Golf Championship Aug 30- 31 2014 Labor Day Weekend. OK the premier tournament in the state, a weekend full of great disc golf and fun with friends from around the state and beyond. This is event is made possible by a lot of dedicated players organized by the Michigan Disc Golf Organization - a major undertaking and they get some great support from Discraft the main sponsor.
The MDGO also bring the Michigan clubs together to work out the yearly PDGA sanctioned tournament schedule to avoid conflicts of events to close to each other and plan 10 Featured events which are fund raisers for the Championship and run a Plant a Basket program to help encourage new courses. The list goes on. such as the exclusive MDGO Glow Zone's fund raiser disc. Get your Glow On with these long lasting GLOW Zone's - Get into the Glow Zone....
If you are wondering how to secure Berths for your club or get your events on the schedule or be more a part of the direction of Disc Golf in the state of Michigan get involved with the MDGO. There is a Yahoo group for info and messages and meetings a few times a year. Contact MDGO to learn more:

Berths - there are 466 berths to the 2014 Michigan Disc Golf Championships in Ludington this Labor Day.
+180 Berths awarded at MDGO Feature Events (18 Berths x 10 Events)
+ 286 Berths available for distribution by local clubs / organizers
Now of those 286 - DGLA has 6 for the DGLA Player level members. 2 will be awarded this Winter and 4 this summer. Currently there are only 20 DGLA Player level members. Given that many of these die hard players will win berths at their local leagues and tournaments that gives a high probability to all the DGLAplayer level members to get a berth. The Winter season deadline has passed but you can still get in for the Summer Point Series.
All Berth Winners Must Pre Register By Aug. 22, 2014 This is important - it's great to win a berth but you must register by Aug 22nd or the berth will be lost as it is added to the Last Chance qualifier event

FYI with half the month over I wanted to provide some status and some exciting news.
First the deadline for becoming a DGLA "Player" level for the winter has past (Jan 15th) along with the deadline for adding new leagues to the MiCPS-W 2014. So no new leagues and the DGLA Player leaderboard is set with 20 Players (2 have not played a round yet so they do not show on the leaderboard but they are in and all set for summer. I have the discs for Player packages so see me soon to pick your disc and get your DGLA glow mini. The MiCPS 2014 Glow buzzes are almost all gone - Must be that time of year - Get your glow on!!!!
Also we just had the 130th DGLA member sign up. There are two more in the pending email verification which is needed to activate the account and assign the DGLA lifetime member ship number. The DGLA membership is currently free and shows your support for what we are doing. You probably wish you had a lower PDGA number here is your shot at one of those early numbers that said I was there, I participated, I want Disc Golf Leagues to grow and improve. Thanks to the over 130 who have joined.
http://www.discgolfleagueassociation.org/Membership_/membership_.html
We also have the DGLA: Oregon <– O –> Michigan Disc Swap going on. You can see the discs collected that will be swapped. Reminder I will ship the collected Michigan discs March 1st so please contact me and ensure I have your disc(s) and dollar(s) by Feb 28th unless I collect 50 discs before then. First 50 discs will be swapped. Leagues/Clubs have priority but individuals may participate if desired. A limited number of duplicate discs are also welcomed as they will be distributed to multiple recipients on the other side.
Here are the latest discs collected:

So for January what are the trends:
"COLD" - Yes many double points rounds reported this winter for players playing when the temps are below 15 degrees F. Please make sure someone post in the talk section or sends me a message if you froze your @ss off and earned double points for the round.
Well for the first two weeks Scott Sprow accumulated the most points, 85 & 69. Then Jay B took it back again with 82 for the third week and currently Josh Minard & Scott Sprow are holding the top point accumulation with 48 points for this week (weeks end Saturday).
So far the most rounds played in a given week is 3 by Jay B.
So what does that mean for the January monthly stats looking like:
Well with Scott Sprow's two appearances at the top of the Weekly Point leaderboards it means we have some competition at the top of the leaderbaord. Jay B and Scott Sprow currently tied at 234 points earned in January so far..... Game ON!

This Disc Swap is an outstanding idea, Foz and Rogue Rider!! I am hoping that more local clubs and organizations get on board with it.I have donated several items from the Disc Golfers of Oregon and have several more disc's to add to the Oregon shipment to Michigan so if you have a new unthrown club or local tourney stamped disc, I will gladly collect them and make sure that Rogue gets them on the way East for this Disc Swap. Here is a perfect opportunity to show how big our disc golf is here in Oregon!!
I'm going to talk to Keith Aten and Matt Rinker, see if these clubs want to get on board. Its a grea ...

Show me the numbers and unveil the secretes of climbing those Leaderboards…….
OK what has happened in the last few weeks – December in Michigan has broken a bunch of weather records for snow and cold but we keep on play’n. Well many of us. More and more each year and this year you really have to want it.....Crazy Weather
What is the craziest weather you've played in this winter? I'd love to collect a few pictures from around the state of Michigan extreme winter disc golf. Post & link or send my your pictures. We can also link them on our DGLA Facebook page. Keep your camera batteries warm ;-)
Ok for the month of December (1st – 28th) , two days after the 28th, Disc Golf Scene magic happens and the special weekly Leaderboards lock – only those rounds posted to that points are included. The overall leader board updates when ever a league round is posted or updated. The results - Players get extra Achievement Bling on their profile pages and the special leaderboards memorialize the achievements; the most Rounds and most Points accumulated during a week, and Month, as well as most Wins and most Leagues for the month.
It’s currently week 7 so everyone still has time to climb the leaderboard. Let’s take a look at who is playing and who is achieving.

That first round was a Glow round at Waterworks in which he hit the Winter Ace on Hole #2 for 25 extra points – Get your GLOW ON – Nice week Jeff
The next highest point getters in a given week were also in the same cold week:
Ben Calhoun 80pts
Jay B 80
Most rounds played in a given week = 4, achieved by two players, one who achieved the max in two weeks during December and almost a third week. I wonder if that is paying off for him…….
Craig Clingan 4 - week 3
Jay B 4 Weeks 2 & 5
Five players hit 3 leagues in a given week.
Justin Dean
Jay B
Brian Kelley
Josh Taylor
John "NACHO" Norkowski

DGLA expanded the Statewide Cooperative Point Series to Oregon and Ohio this winter and already the expanded player cooperation has yielded new ideas. ROGUE RIDER (Lee) from Oregon sent me an idea to swap a few Michigan Event or Club stamped discs for some Oregon discs to help spice up their CTP and award disc selection. Pretty cool idea. With a little more cooperation, Lee and I have expanded this idea to help all the interested clubs and leagues in our state to create the first Oregon <– O –> Michigan Disc Swap
What we purpose is to collect discs from any club/league in Michigan and in Oregon and then swap the discs and redistribute the discs to the participating club/leagues. If you’re interested please contact Foz or Lee depending on which state your club/league is in. We will explore how to grow and improve the disc swap, such as adding other state into the mix. Keep those ideas flowing. It's amazing what can be accomplished when we work cooperatively.
Details:
Disc must have a Club/League/Event stamp and in New condition.
Deliver your disc and $1.00 per disc (to help with shipping) to your state contact (see below) by Friday February 28th 2014 .
Provide the following information with the disc(s):
Organization Name:
Contact Name:
Disc Golf Scene name (if different):
Contact Phone Number:
Description of disc(s) provided (Max 2 per organization):
Note Michigan Organizations - Two discs max per organization for this first Oregon <– O –> Michigan Disc Swap as we have many more clubs than Oregon currently.
The discs will be randomly assigned and redistributed to the participating organizations before the Summer season kicks off. (early March)
In Michigan we will have a random drawing event at a local Ann Arbor brewery for those who want to attend in person (details to be announced). I will also try and post pictures and details of the discs / groups participating on Facebook so everyone can see what discs are being swapped and are up for grabs at a league near you….
We hope to swap at least 50 discs in this first exchange so check your club inventory, or personal stash and swap for something most likely no one else in your state has in there bag or on their wall.

Before I get into all the cold facts I wanted to let you know that DGLA has just assigned Member number 119 with three more pending email verification. Now since this is a cooperative effort and we are always looking for more members to help grow Disc Golf and Disc Golf leagues – show your support – be a founding member for FREE. Thanks to the 119 for showing your support for our collective effort to make this more fun and grow our sport. Thanks!

DGLA is very excited to be expanding. We have added Oregon and Ohio Cooperative Point Series to build interest in these two states and see if we can build on what we collectively have built here in Michigan.
I wanted to also point out a few things related to our MiCPS-W. You will notice that the leader board updated recently. Besides the new rounds the three tiered point calculation is now applied. League less than 20 players are guaranteed 20 points for 1st place, League with more than 60 players are capped, trying to equalize things a bit. Based on the DGLA member votes this season will again keep your TWO best league rounds of the week (Sunday - Saturday) and ACEs are worth 25 points like Summer. It still plays to get out and play as many rounds as possible to maximize your points and improve while enjoy this great Michigan Winter weather. See all the details on the DGLA website if your interested.
Also the weekly and monthly leaderboard are now active. The DGLA Player level leaderboard is also active, for those who have skin in the game and are eligible for Mi Disc Golf Championships berths and other awards. Thanks again to the MDGO who do such a great job coordinating and hosting the Discraft Michigan Disc Golf Championships in Ludington in early Fall and making it possible for leagues and the MiCPS to be able to award berths based on players performance. These berth and the awards cost DGLA $ so they are only available for the DGLA Player level members who paid $30 to help us provide the awards. Besides a DGLA Players package, a portion of that goes to the Michigan Course Improvement fund and $15 goes to the awards. We pay out the top 40 players or 40% of the players which ever is largest. Deadline for becoming a Player level member for the Winter season is Jan 15th. You also get the Summer season included at no additional cost. The cost for Summer alone is also $30 so the best bag for the buck is two season for the price of one. Tell your secret Santa and let's enjoy the Winter season.
The Point Series is still FREE and everyone is competing for the Michigan Winter Disc Golf League Champion title. Bring along a friend out to leagues, enjoy the great courses, pass along good player etiquette and help keep our courses clean. We wish everyone a great season.
Double Point Rounds: I just updated two league for yesterday cold temps. DOUBLE POINTS!!!! Below 15 degrees earns you double points. Make sure you send us a message or post in the Talk section: "Location, Time, League Name"
Once reported and updated, you will see in the schedule "Double Points" next to the entry and in the player stats (2Xpts), for those who braved the cold to play.
Reminder if you see "Dropped" next to a round on your player stats it means you played more than two rounds and this was not one of your "Two Best Rounds" for that week.
Reminder from last Winter
# of Players 475 (through the whole season)

How is this season shaping up so far????
DGLA MiCPS-Winter 2014 – Quick Summary
Overall Summary:
# of Players 267
# of participating League 30
If a league you play is not listed or a new league is created playing in Michigan between now and Mar 1st let us know before Jan 15th and we will add - no cost. And there is nothing special or extra the league has to do. It's automagical thanks to Disc Golf Scene. Note Bag tag leagues and handicapped league that do not post the adjusted scores can not be added currently. But Santa's is hard at work on a solution for the handicapped leagues but probably not going to make it under the Christmas tree for this season. Hoping for the summer season if all the boys and girls are good this season.
Stats show me the stats:
The most rounds played this month so far is 4 with three players hitting that achievement, Criag Clingan, Phil "Puttimus Prime" Common, Jay B . Jay B did that by playing the most unique leagues played so far this month with 4 different leagues. Phil "Puttimus Prime" Common took advantage of the 4 rounds to collect the most points so far in December with 94 points and Corey Kieft, Bryan Murphy, Ron Howard and Scott Spear Sr. all securing the most wins in December tied with 2 win each. – Way to get out and enjoy the winter rounds.
All these stats and more are on the leaderboards:
