Good morning everyone! I would like to welcome you all to the 18th Annual Motor City Chain Gang Turkey Open Doubles!
Due to the COVID Protocol, we are taking a few new precautions this year. Once you check-in, I will go over a few things with your team and send you out to your holes keeping less people around the pavilion.
I hope to have all of the Rules and tournament procedures outlined here so you should have time to read everything before we tee off.
We will try to have the 2nd round start time posted online in the Comments section so you do not have to come to the pavilion to ask. However, you will need to come to the pavilion to see what hole your 2nd round starts on.
After the round, we will try to wrap up the event as soon as possible. We will hold a raffle and we will have pre-packaged prizes. This will help keep the teams who cashed separated. It also means that everyone will not be looking through the merchandise all at once. This is NOT the MCCG’s preferred way of doing payouts but these are strange times and we would like to keep everyone as healthy and safe as possible. Thank you understanding.
Before I get into today’s course layout, formats, and OB’s, let’s talk about some upcoming events:
Tomorrow, Monday, November 2nd, we are starting our 5 Star Winter Putting League. This is our 12th annual season of Indoor Putting. Once again we will be hosting the league at 5 Star Bowling Alley on 16 Mile Road in Sterling Heights. Registration is between 5:30 – 6 pm and we hope to begin play around 6:30 pm. To maintain social distancing we are implementing some changes. Registration and relaxing in between games will be now take place inside the Poker Room which is just inside the main doors. Rob Dahmen has taken over the putting league and is being assisted by Katie and Dave Banninger. Katie and Dave will be taking membership and handling the Double Tap. Putting at 5 Star on Monday evenings starts tomorrow night.
On Saturday, November 14th, we will begin the Saturday BOBIS traveling league. Shaun Adkins and Krystal Fromm will be hosting the league this year. A big shout out to Dave Tomlinson who ran it the past 4 years and did an amazing job. We cannot thank Dave enough and are looking forward to Shaun and Krystal taking over. The cost is $5 a week and a $1 voluntary Ace Pool. Memberships include the opportunity to get into the Super Pool. The league is on the Scene as well as a proposed schedule. BOBIS!
Now to the event: A big shout out to Josh Schulte, Chris Leo, Derek Michalak, and Brent Moreno for allowing us to use their baskets today on the upper course. Thank you guys!
I would also like to take a moment to thank those who have helped in some way and the staff. Scotty V was out here yesterday with his buddies and helped move some picnic tables around. Chris Leo will be assisting in the morning and following the 2nd round adding scores and helping keep the event run smooth. Damon Evans will also be helping do scores in between rounds and assisting throughout the day. My wife Brenda will also help with scores after the 1st round, she helped put the board together last night, and did shopping for the Turkey’s for the 2 lucky winners. We are lucky to have those mentioned above helping us pull off another successful Turkey Open.
We will have a few Discin’ For Damon discs available for purchase. All proceeds help Damon with his ongoing Cancer treatment. We are asking for a $20 donation per autographed disc.
We have to thank the Shelby Township parks and Rec for allowing us to barricade a portion of the parking lot for our event today.
Finally, a moment to thank Discraft for everything they do for the MCCG. Since the COVID pandemic hit, many disc manufacturers have had their inventory depleted. Discraft came to our aid for the Turkey Open and provided some discs hot off the press for todays payouts.
Now, to the course and format. The scorecards should include tee assignments by division and the holes being played in order. The short tees are in the title info and a blue “S” is above the hole #.
Today’s format: 2 Rounds of 18 Holes - BYOP DOUBLES! (BEST SHOT)
The 2 rounds at River Bends includes a temporary 9 holes around the Upper parking lot allowing us to play 2 unique courses on 36 different holes.
Course A will be holes 1 through 9 of the permanent course plus the nine temporary holes numbered 10 – 18.
Course B will be holes 10 through 27 of the permanent course
Today’s Tee Assignments for both rounds will be as follows:
• Open Arms, Big Arms, Old Arms will be playing from the Long Tees.
• The Small Arms and Mixed Arms will be playing from the Short Tees.
The OBs for today are as follows:
• The River, your disc must be completely surrounded by water or in some cases over the River on land
• All pavilions
• The walking path and over
• The Parking Lot
• The gravel road on temp Hole 11 is NOT O.B.
Here is a brief look at the temporary 9 holes:
First off, there is a very close map of the temp holes on the Disc Golf Scene Turkey Open page under the Pictures of Flyer tabs.
We are guests here and the Shelby Township Park Department is allowing us to use the land up top. After the morning rain has left, we are expecting a sunny, cold, and windy November day and there could be some people coming to the park to enjoy it. Please be courteous if someone gets in a fairway and explain what we are doing and why. If someone walks near the temp course, you can throw when they have reached a safe distance away and are no longer in harm’s way. Remember, any throw could bounce off a tree into the path of someone. Most of the temp holes have been designed with this in mind albeit, there are a couple of temp holes where park patrons may be close by. Be a good disc golf ambassador.
There are flags for the tee pads on all holes and painted arrows near the baskets pointing you towards the next tee pads.
Holes 12 and 18 on these temp holes have short tee pads.
Hole 11s basket is on the steps’ platform below the fairway grade. If both of your throws sail over the railing, you can putt up to the basket or use a Mulligan if your team has one to use. Throwing over the railing is not O.B. The gravel road / path on Hole 11 is NOT O.B.
The parking lot is OB on Hole 12.
If you go long on Hole 13, you could bring the path into play. If you go long and right on Hole 13, the sidewalk and cement in and around the pavilion as well as on the pavilion are all O.B.
Hole 14 is straight but right next to the parking lot. Be careful
