Typically, there are very few competitors in the juniors fields. So even if your son finishes 1st out of 5 competitors, he won't get many points. However, if he plays in Recreational division, where there are more competitors, or depending on his rating, Intermediate, he would score more points for each person he beats in that division. In order to get enough points to qualify for Worlds, we took our son to Illinois last year in August to play Rec division in the Ledgestone Open. He finished 87th out of 179 players and earned 516 points in one tournament. It was also an A tier tournament, so you are beating better rated players.
