What does the authority say on salting pads?
So after more research I say:
Avoid salting if possible. We generally don't know the quality of the concrete install. Because we don't know the quality it is risky to use salt as it subjects the concrete to a freeze/thaw cycle where the pores can absorb the water as a liquid. When the salts gets cleaned off or used up then the water in the pores freezes, expanding and causing surface degradation and potential cracking. If the concrete is a good installation then the pores should be minimal and small. I think we are pretty lucky around here because most of the concrete work has been done by licensed professionals, not Joe-Bob Billy in the back of his pickup.
Further, if you must salt then try to use the safe de-icers out there - potassium chloride or magnesium chloride as it will have a lower environmental impact and also be safer for the concrete. More discussion is welcome on this topic. Cheers
