I don't know if any of you will still get notifications from this league, but I wanted to let you all know that I am closing the books on the 2011 league ace fund. We voted to spend the left-over 2011 Ace Fund on course improvements at Tuttle, and most of it was spent for our Spring 2012 Workday. There is a small amount of money left over: $28.01 to be exact, which I am rolling over into the 2012 Doubles League Ace Fund. I will also post on our 2012 Doubles League Page to give you an update on that fund.

The 2013 Manhattan Area Discgolf Doubles (M.A.D.D. -- not to be confused with Mothers Against Drunk Driving!) will begin Tuesday, March 12th, 2013 at Tuttle. Hope to see you all there!

The earliest Tuttle work day I will be a part of will be Saturday, November 19th.
Here's why:
1. I still haven't heard from Rev Kev regarding how he thinks the unclaimed Ace Fund $ should be spent.
2. I still haven't talked to the River Pond director/staff regarding hauling in a generator & power tools to work on the baskets.

With that said though, I am only talking about basket REPAIRS, not course redesigns / pin changes.

Does anyone have any good ideas for a possible work day out there? (It is tough for me to get off work on the weekends, but I can usually work it out if I know in advance) Would anyone be willing to put in a little time early this Saturday or Sunday with me? I don't have the resources (tools) to dig holes/ cut posts or anything, but I am willing to do whatever it takes to help get the ball rolling and will put in as much work as I can handle.

Yes, I have a very portable Miller brand wire feed welder that uses a standard household 110 volt power source, OR a properly powered gas generator. An hour of touch up welding on those baskets could make them play like new. Or at least they would no longer spit out discs because of their funky rocking and pivoting lower cage.

So, I propose we have a half day work day (4 hours with 6-8 people minimum) and get the baskets back to rock solid shape. Specifically speaking we would do the following.
- Myself and one other person would set-up w/ welder in a fixed location at the course
- Two or three man teams pull baskets & haul them back to the welding location.
- Once the baskets are brought back to the welding location the guys who pulled them will hold the poles, chain racks & baskets perfect as I make the required welds. In other words, permanently welding the chain racks & baskets to the poles.
- After the welds have been made, the two to three man teams return their basket... then go grab yet another troubled basket.

I can even put a few beads of welding slag on the posts to make them fit their ground sleeves tighter if needed. However this should be kept to a minimum so as to not make them fit too tight (and maybe get stuck).

Regarding painting a few years ago I exchanged e-mails with the guy in charge out there. Not too long after that I decided to start working on the Warner Park thing, thus I kind of left it at that. At that time he was willing to provide some spray paint if we did the work. So, I suspect he will take us up on a matching spray paint idea.

If the chains get replaced on hole #3, I would offer 25 cents / foot for the old heavy chains that can be used for other course improvements. Rick and I visited a bit today about repairing some of the baskets. I don't want to volunteer his services but it sounds like if there is an outlet we can use at the lake he might be able to bring a welder. I think the wobbly chain racks and baskets make them seem worse than they are. I wonder if the Corp of Engineers would hook us up with some silver RustOleum if we offered to do the paining? Heck, if they know we are going to improve the facilty using our "course improvement fund" they might match it?

I personally think that it would be great to get some new chains on 3, but if it really kills our budget maybe we should either put on hold for the sake of more entertaining placements or give a trial ... show more ›

I personally think that it would be great to get some new chains on 3, but if it really kills our budget maybe we should either put on hold for the sake of more entertaining placements or give a trial run at possibly only replacing the outside chains (since it is the weight of the chains that makes putting difficult, maybe it would soften them up a little) Securing a few of the tops of the baskets a little better would also be great, but I'm not sure that would cost much (if anything). Depending on the cost of putting in new placements, I think we should put some thought into as many of the ones without alternates as we can. I have given some thought to a few in particular and would like to put some heads together to try and get a few creative ideas. I'm sure between us, we could come up with a few practice baskets and see how some ideas play out. I feel like I have a few great ideas for placements that might force a little creativity and possibly provide a little more risk/challenge.
Thanks RevKev for running the doubles league, I have looked forward to it every week and will miss Tuttle Tuesdays this winter. I hope some of us die-hards can still make it out there during the cold months and give the course some action.

Anything we don't spend on course improvements will go into next years fund. Several people have suggested that we put new (more friendly) chains on hole number 3. I know from past experience that this will cost around $50. We also have talked about buying concrete and putting in a few new basket placements. Apparently, the #14 right placement was removed prior to Stampede, so this would be my first suggestion. Any other thoughts?

No ties, thankfully, 'cause it was dark when we finished, and we spent plenty of time looking for discs on the last two holes. Good shootin' everyone!

However, I'm pretty sure it has concrete bridge abutments holding it in place. If that's true, moving it will require a notable amount of concrete work (pouring new abutments at its new location). That should be considered before asking for such a course improvement.

Instead, is there any way to change the course layout that would center the existing bridge between pin placement(s) & tee pad? There seems to be plenty of room to the north (dam side). Just thinking outside the box... would have to look at possible layouts...

The wind was intense, and so was the competition as we raced the darkness on the second to last night of league! The teams were Mark and Rob, Thad & RevKev, and Kevin Zane going California. There was no more than one stroke separating all three teams until hole 14 when Zane parred and the other two teams birdied to go -3(M&R) -2(T&RK) -1(Zane). Thad & I both missed short our short putt while the other two teams birdied, making the scores -4(M&R) -2(T&RK) -2(Zane). Jogging to beat the darkness, everyone parred 16. On hole 17, Thad and I slipped firmly into last place when we were forced to take a lost disc penalty for a circle 4. But Kevin Zane birdied his last two holes, sinking a near-blind putt in the dark on hole 18 to tie Rob & Mark for 1st. Not wanting to risk losing any more discs, the two teams shared the $20 purse and the win.

Join us next Tuesday for the last night of league. Discs in the air at 5:20 and 5 minutes per hole--wear your jogging shoes!

In response to Rick -- just as a point of information (because I know very little about these sorts of things) -- would it be possible to stretch the money by repairing the baskets at Tuttle, or must they be replaced, as Rick suggests? New baskets are pricey and if repair is an option, we could probably improve a handful of the worst baskets for the cost of one replacement -- better bang for the buck. I also think it looks a little odd when you have different types of baskets from hole to hole. But as I said, I don't have the knowledge, so I would not be surprised to be wrong.

The idea of getting more organized, as a club, is a good one and necessary for the kind of progress many of us would like to see (course expansion, better equipment and amenities, more local events, etc.). If nothing else, anything we can do to lighten the burden on Rick and Mark would be good for everyone, as they have been doing yeoman's work for disc golf in the area and can't be expected to keep that up indefinitely.

I think the model Rick proposed is a good start. We don't want to get too ambitious and build an organizational structure that ITSELF becomes a burden to maintain. I've been involved with a number of local volunteer groups, and keeping an optimal balance between member investment (of time/money) and reward is always one of the biggest challenges. The best plan, I think, is one that is simple as possible, and flexible enough to be scaled up or down if necessary.

IMO, the Ace $ should stay tied to the Tuttle course in some way. It was generated based on a skill competition that takes place there, so thats where it should stay. If someone wants a piece of it, use something it bought, etc.... they should have to go to Tuttle.

I do like what Jon is saying about the course winning. I think it would be wise to buy a replacement basket for #3. Then everyone wins (plus everyone could see right where the ace $ went). This could be a standard practice, everyone knowning that if you can't win it by a certain financial point, the course won & a new basket is bought. This would also put a cap on the size of the Ace Fund so we don't attract out of towners that want to play once just to take big big & money & run.

Question is, can we/you do that even though it was not specified to all who entered? I'm okay with it, but I'm not exactly a regular at Tuttle Tuesday...

Regarding clubs, there is no "DFOK account", nor is it an official club (yet)... just unofficial. At the end of the season, Mark & I plan to pay out 100% of the $ (minus expenses) from this years tag $.

DFOK became "public" so to speak because discgolfscene required a club name to set-up a bag tag league. My #1 goal of creating the bag tag league was to flush out as many local players as possible so we can provide an estimate of how many, what type, age, etc. of local people play disc golf. This will be vital information for our plans to expand Warner (& Fairmont too).

Here is where I stand on creating (re-creating) a local club. I suppose it is time we get a club going that is representative of the three county area, minimum. I'm thinking "three counties", rather than "Manhattan", because we're now working with a growing Ft. Riley crowd & many local players and courses are not in Manhattan proper.

So, the way I think we should structure the club (could be called DFOK) would be to have standard officers, membership dues, etc., PLUS establish an official representative (or 2) for each DG course in our membership base. Ie; a Tuttle rep, a Warner rep., Ft Riley rep, Pennyland rep., Fairmont rep, etc. That way we can do a good job of spreading the support (because properly maintaining one course is a lot), but yet being coordinated in these efforts like a club should be.

Sorry it was so LONG. But that stuff has been rattling around in my head for a while now.

Nice shooting last night everyone! This is about as tough as this course plays! The only thing I can thing of to make it harder would be to move #8 to the left position, and possibly #10 to the right. If anyone has time this week, we should move all the baskets to their shortest/easiest placement in order to speed up play.

Couple of things:
1st... Only two weeks left before daylight savings time, and daylight is getting hard to come by. We started around 5:20 last night and made it in with some reasonable daylight on the last hole. The sun will set 9 minutes earlier next Tuesday. Let's keep start time at 5:20 so that more people have a chance to play, but that means we will have to play each hole 30 seconds faster--no problem, right?

2nd... Since no one has seen fit to hit an ace yet, it is possible that we will end the season with close to $250 in the ace fund. Here are some ideas of what to do with that money, in no particular order:
1.... Somebody just hit a friggin Ace!
2.... Throw a party/cookout with the leftover money
3.... Leave some in the Ace Fund to start next year's fund
4.... Put some or all of the money in the Disc Golf Fanatics of Kansas account, or resurrect the Manhattan Disc Golf Club, and use it as seed money for course improvements like a bridge on 17, baskets, T-Pads, Signs, etc... or as seed money for a Disc Golf Event like a tournament or the annual Ace Race (LCM's "Break the Chains" tournament probably used about $800 in seed money between advertising and pre-ordering discs.) We are not a super-organized league/club, but we could do some cool stuff with a little cash and some extra effort.

With some volunteer work, we could make a little money go a long way. A bridge on 17 would be great as well as maybe even setting up new pin placements and/ or repairing some old ones.
