Awesome private course with lots of shot shapes, elevation changes, and range of scoring opportunities!
Pros:
Variety of Layouts: Junior, Short, and Long tees provide distinct challenges, from ace runs to decision-making par setups.
Dedicated Disc Golf Only: No joggers, bikers, or picnickers, just pure disc golf in a peaceful setting.
Scenic and Secluded: Mature white pines, oak, maple, and beech trees create stunning views and a cooler playing environment in the summer.
Elevation & Terrain: Dynamic elevation changes and strategic use of natural features like water/swamp hazards add depth to the design.
Intentional Design: Fair yet demanding holes, with a mix of shot shapes favoring both forehand and backhand players.
Professional Equipment: Outfitted with Innova Discatcher Pro 28 baskets, the gold standard in catching performance.
Low Traffic: Play at your own pace without worrying about crowds, backups, or pressure from faster groups behind you.
Ongoing Improvements: Reflective navigation and tee signs (glow round ready), clean outhouse, benches, picnic tables, and a growing list of player-friendly features.
Owner Passion & Care: Constant investment of time, money, and heart to improve and maintain the course.
Cons:
Natural Tees (for now): All tee areas are currently natural. While they're level, clearly marked, and functional, they may not suit every player's preference.
Navigation In Progress: Some players may still prefer to use UDisc to navigate unfamiliar stretches until signage is fully completed.
Some Tight Fairways: A few holes are still breaking in and may feel tighter than expected. The design encourages thoughtful play, but errant shots may be punished.
Ticks in Spring: As with any wooded Michigan course, tick awareness is needed during the early season.
Spikey Hazards: Autumn olive in some rough areas can be unforgiving—disc control is rewarded.
Other Thoughts:
Tomahawk Disc Golf Course is a privately owned, 18-hole disc golf destination tucked into a beautiful 35 acres of Michigan forest. Built over the past five years by owner Michael Johnson, the course began as a vision after realizing the land had the perfect amount of space for a full 18-hole layout. What started with hand tools and volunteer help has grown into a carefully developed course with heavy machinery, professional baskets, reflective signage, and a deep sense of purpose.
Designed to be both fun and challenging, Tomahawk features three tee layouts per hole, Long, Short, and Junior, offering advanced-level decision-making, intermediate play, and ace runs. The Long tees, in particular, force players to weigh risks and rewards with calculated precision.
This is a dedicated disc golf-only space—no joggers, bikers, or casual park users cutting across fairways. It's quiet, scenic, and intentionally designed using natural features like elevation changes, water hazards, and old deer hunting lanes. The result is a varied, forested course with plenty of shade in the summer and shelter from the wind.
More than anything, Tomahawk is a passion project. Thousands of dollars and countless hours of labor go into maintaining and improving the course every year. Players won't find concrete tee pads (yet), but they will find an engaging layout, thoughtful course care, and a welcoming space to enjoy the sport. Every dollar goes back to directly fund course development and maintenance - fairways are widened, trees are trimmed low to prevent tripping, and features like benches, signage, and navigation improvements are added with players in mind.
Tomahawk isn't a top-ranked course—yet—but it's built with love, intention, and a long-term vision to grow into a tournament and league-ready venue. Whether you're chasing birdies or just seeking a peaceful round in the woods, this course offers an authentic and rewarding disc golf experience. Put this course on your "wish list" and come check it out!
