This course, despite all the hype generated from its placement on this list, does NOT belong in the top 10 in Minnesota. The tees are just rubber padding, the course is infested with poison ivy, and getting to one hole from another was a difficult and long process. This course does have some merits, like the fact that the Mississippi bluffs present a nice backdrop to your game or the fact that it is free to get it. However it does not deserve as much praise as it has received.

ABOUT ME:This is my favorite course so far, and fortunately I live near it also. I have played this sport now for three years and would considered myself an above average player. I mainly use three discs, Cannon, Halo, and Money Putter. If you are looking for a good challenge, St. Mary's course is for you. ( FYI, if you look at earlier reviews, the holes might be different from what I am saying, but that's because they flipped the course around. The holes didn't change, just the hole numbers.)

Pros: This course is in a Wooden area with a wide range of different holes, from precision shots (hole 9), over water (hole 14), open fields (hole10), up hill (hole 3), and down hill (hole 17). It is a beautiful course with wind being hardly a factor on most holes. I go there when it's windy because it's in a little valley with trees blocking the wind. I see deer quite often when I go. If I go with a party of two people totally (same skill level as me), it will take us about 1hr 30mins ish to finish. It's a great challenge for more intermediate or up players. A birdie shot could turn into a double bogey. The best I have heard/seen anyone do on this course is +2. My personal best is +4.

Cons: Being in the woods, it is easy to lose a disc. I have a decent control over my throws and never lost a disc there, but one bad throw and your disc could go in some brush or in a stream. Is NOT a good course to begin your frolfing career. A lot of shots require skill and control. The signs for each hole are not fixed from when they flipped the course around. Most holes are a par 3 with four holes being a par 4. I would bring a hat. Ticks could be a problem. I already found one on me this year. If you have to go in the brush and look for a disc, you could also pick up a friend. Some baskets are on a slope, so a birdie shot could turn into a double bogey. I have had shots where they would hit the basket, and than roll down hill past where my original shot began.

Overall: I gave it an A, only because the signs needed to be updated and can get brushy if it's not maintained in the summer. Love the course and it's a great challenge. If you are in Winona, they also have two other courses in case you thought this course was too hard or didn't like it. One I use as a warm up 9 holes (rated C by me) before going to St. Marys, and another B rated 18 hole course.

The pros, a lot of the holes are fun but seem pretty lefty heavy. It is in a beautiful setting and almost like a nature walk. Now the cons....be prepared to walk. This course could've been 27 holes with the distance between baskets and the next tee. The tee signs are just the same course map, not the individual hole. Two of the tee signs are missing. I think it was 11 and 18. Be prepared to spend time walking each hole to find the basket as almost all of them are blind. If you do play, I would recommend find a regularly to guide you. I can't rate this course high because it should not be the #2 course in minnesota

This is an awful course to learn how to play on but as long as you're not a beginner and not too attached to your discs this course is a blast to play. Hole 17 is a really cool hole but I'd have to say my favorite hole is 10 just because of the cool drop off in front of the tee. To summarize, not for beginners but great for honing skill and frustrating you.

This course has great use of terrain, lots of up and down. There are a few water hazards on holes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 11. There aren't too many long holes here but some of the wooded ones require finesse at placement or an easy 2 can turn into 4 or 5 if you hit water. The course is open to the public too, just be sure to park in the lot next to the big The Woods sign next to the baseball field. Not a great course if you only have one disc and don't want to lose it.
