Discussion topics:

Masters+ events have occurred in prior years and there is at least one this year (Michigan Masters, June 11, Reed park). Much gratitude goes to those who organize such events. Limited time and space considerations can effect the opportunities for the less popular divisions in some of the big all-divisions tournaments; organizers can usually predict the player spots needed, but they cannot easily build the courses in a vicinity to insure that smaller divisions have equitable access to quality cou ... more

The 2016 Michigan Senior Olympics Disc Golf Tournament will be held at Oakland University Disc Golf Course in August. I am targeting the 21st as it is within the Michigan Senior Olympics 2 week window and I am running a Featured Event the week before. Saturday the 20th is a possibility but it is also Dream Cruise Saturday so that is a tough one ...

August dates for Senior Olympics at Oakland U. helps us identify events on our play schedules. Thanks...let us know how this goes.

PDGA Tier B is given...

For the May 9 Masters Open in Ypsilanti. Not only is it now Tier B, the number of holes look to be more manageable. The popularity of this event was high on the recent survey (unsanctioned group). Expect more registrations from those waiting for the tier approval.

steve nolff   April 10 at 12:49pm

Looks to be a good event. Honestly, I was kind of waiting until Terry kind of got his act together. There was a serious lack of information for a while. I also, like some, tried to sign up and found the mandatory t shirt cost. I understand that has been fixed. I will work on my schedule here soon and hope to sign up.

Randy "Shide-arm" Shideler   April 10 at 8:27pm

I'm in. Looking forward to this event.

Tournament Preference Poll

Let’s all plan to improve the concentration of Masters and More at tournaments throughout the “warm” playing season. What follows is intended to give some structure to an otherwise broad question, “What are your plans?” Making this poll involved some assumptions. Individuals wishing to offer consideration of a particular event are urged to do so. It should be acknowledged that the interest in larger age divisions that improve the status of the group will strain agai ... more

Handicap scoring

After a little web-surfing I see that PDGA has acknowledged a proprietary (trademarked) system done by Discgolfunited. It relies heavily on the PDGA player ratings and appears to have relabeled known features such as the Scratch Scoring Averages found with PDGA. The thing being marketed may be the software used to make it all work at a particular event (no small thing). Playing 20-questions with the folks at Discgolfunited would help with our estimate of the usefulness of the program, but it will also look like we are trying to re-assemble the elements into a different but competitive program.

Masters Tournament

On May 9 our friends at the Throw Shop/Lakeshore/Ypsilanti are hosting the Michigan Masters Challenge. Reports are that it will be PDGA tier B. Also, the nearby event event in Whitmore Lake will not be offering Age divisions; so, harmful competition is avoided. This will be a useful model on occasion. Too frequent use could lead to unhealthy disintegration.

Alztimers Disc Golf

I have purchased 10 of the vintage pin up girl (we all remember them) bag tags with Alztimers Disc Golf put on them. Alztimers is a cross of alzhimers and oldtimers. I am looking for 9 more 50 and over ( Alztimers) interested in an informal year long mid Michigan bag tag challenge. No cost and an altogether disc golf and party around early December of next year at a yet to be selected mid Michigan course. If interested let me know.

The first ten should be mailed today. So if we get another, I feelthat we can handle them. The rest of the bag tags can be given out for prizes. So as a general overview of the rules. It is mando that you play all other 10 players in this year long challenge. You can play as many matches as you want ... more

Great job James. Thank you for spearheading this. Just as a side note, my Tag will be on the line at States if I can get there to any of those in this group, even the State Champ Mr. Clingan :-)

John Minicuci   December 25, 2013 at 8:39pm

Got my tag yesterday. Merry Christmas to me. Thank you Josh!

Master appeals

See the recent talk posts for appeals to masters&more. This activity is welcome and will help in the formation of plans, especially when we get started for 2014.

Somethings to consider on a cold winter day.

A while back I asked the folks at DGS if another rating system could replace the one grade report-card that courses now get. It was panned ( probably too much work.) Recently a "news" comment reminded me of the issue; a fellow complained that a low grade came without any supporting references. Just earlier this month I individually questioned a cookie-cutter review that railed against any private course receiving high ratings. We "seasoned" players might generate, then re ... more

Another planning approach.

Another approach to planning/coordinating- (For the type A planner) Look at the choices given for a full or partial season and project your "wish list". One approach to doing this is to have a few "anchor" events in mind, and then space out the rest of the season taking into consideration your stamina, other events and peaceful relations with a significant other. Let's try it for the rest of 2013. Then, at the start of 2014, we can try it as one or two half season projec ... more

Oct. 26 Davison (Goldenrod); Oct. 27 Laingsburg (Sleepy Hollow)

These two tournaments may need coordination to form age based divisions. Please comment below to begin notice of your preferences and ability to change date and location.

Rob Jerisk   July 12, 2013 at 3:15pm

I will be playing Goldenrod that weekend

Rob Jerisk   September 23, 2013 at 9:49am

Registration is open for the Goldenrod Championships I just registered. IF enough of us register early, maybe they will order a Trophy ofr our division!! Seems like they never do for us!!

Fred Vocino   September 27, 2013 at 9:50pm

Rob makes a good point about early registration and the prospects for more recognition of M+. TDs are most likely to invest in trophies etc. when players prepay register for the smaller divisions. Also, other M+ players like to see prepay regs if the tournament involves a long drive or overnight.

Glad to have received your post. I'm a SGM and have a private course at 48851 and would enjoy hosting players for a round sometime. It's called Buck Creek 18 holes. 9 baskets and you would not be disappointed.

2 tournies: 5/25 is AJ Open, B-tier; and 5/26 is Flip Open C-tier. This is another coordination opportunity to give MMM club members a chance to have their preferred divisions at each or either event. Please post below your preferences including the possible "can do", and the impossible "can't do" events. Also post your preferred division. We are in the learn-as-you-go mode at this point. After a set of response posts are received, the division possibilities may be appar ... more

So...I guess what seems like "north" to someone who grew up in Detroit (ie. Ludington) is not north to someone in your neighborhood?

Adam Geise   May 11, 2013 at 1:04pm

Hi Fred et al. Only need 3 people to make a division for AJ or Flip. I am asst TD for the Mason County area events. If you ever have a question let me know.

Fred Vocino   May 12, 2013 at 9:43am

The Mason Co events are good examples. Lets say that AJ registers 2 masters and the other regs 4. This club might help 2 people by asking, "how can we change plans." A 3/3 or 6/0 solution might occur. We need to work on some guidelines that consider the TD's and clubs.

Opportunity - update

May 25 and 26 is the Southern Michigan Open in Ypsilanti. On June 1 and 2 is the Discraft Great Lakes Open in Dexter. These tournaments are both A-tier (2 days), They are separated in time by only 5 weekdays, and in geography by the city of Ann Arbor. This is the prime example of an opportunity for MM1, MG1, and MS1 to fail to form because too little coordination has occurred. So...we can avoid having too few at one or both events by getting our preferences down on this page and coming up with a ... more

Craig Clingan   April 29, 2013 at 4:37pm

There are 2 tournies up north on 5/25 and 5/26, so I will probably be attending at least one of them. So, of the two you mentioned, I am more likely to play in the DGLO. Do you see this group leaning more towards those in the AA/Detroit area? Just wondering why the AJ Open/Flip Open were not listed as opportunites.

Fred Vocino   April 29, 2013 at 11:48pm

Your observation is right-on. The first "opportunity" post was an attempt to seize the first thing that appeared to me as an example (both a-tier, close in time and place). Your tourney references show how well you appreciate the potential for the MMM club. There is no geocentric favori ... more
