There was an email sent out about this through Jr Worlds asking if we be willing to comment why there might be a low turnout. This is the POV of a dad with 4 boys, from Texas, from a blue collar family, with both parents who work, with one son who competes competitively.
I would say the reason it is low is because of families like ours can only take off two weeks at most for vacation. Maybe if it was the week after worlds and closer? But with it being 2 weeks later at the end of July, most Texas schools are starting their two a day practices in athletics for fall sports in the last week of July now. (Crazy that school seems to creep that far into August, remember the days when we don’t start till September and we are the ones running the world right now right? Ha ha!) School starts the middle of the 2nd week of August now. Since disc Golf is not and official high school or Jr. High sport in anyway in the south the other sports choke it out due to time requirements of high-school sports. Also in our case we live in more of a rural area and the closest course to us is 20 miles away. (I know some cheese ???? with the whine.. ha ha)
If disc golf is serious about wanting to grow the sport, they are going to have to take a page from Tennis but do it better. Tennis is a sport that has its own ratings system but still operates within a high school setting. Disc golf could do the same.
Getting into highs school sport could be a double edge sword as well. While it can gain popularity, it like ball golf and tennis will be limited to the size teams a school can support. That will bring the sport to a choke point.
So do you keep pushing it from out of school and get more kids playing, or do you push for the involvement of it becoming a sport that high schools can adopt and realize it will impact more kids directly in some ways while choking out a majority in other ways?
Love working through the sports psychology of things! I would say push to make disc golf a competitive sport in the high school and Jr high levels. In Texas that word mean you would have to get it into the elementary PE teachers line up of teaching proper mechanics and giving a chance for kids to throw disc! Ha ha Could you imagine being an Elementary school teacher and every kid has a disc to throw? “hey Coach could we borrow the football helmets & pads during off season, I want to teach my elementary kids disc golf!” Ha ha ha
Hope that helps with information of Maybe why the low turn out and a little bit of humor on working through what might need to come!
I think the other question/statement not being mention here is, are we growing the sport to form more competitors to get a larger recognition of the sport, for better sponsorships for higher purse prizes? Or are we will trying to grow the sport to get more kids and adults active to have a healthy life style. The answer to that is probably “yes”. But of course there is a want for the bigger prizes and sponsorship to come into play.
Thanks for reading the ramblings of a half crazed guy! Hope that helps with the thought process of getting towards having a more competitive play in juniors in some way!
