Since like a quarter of the field has made a group request at this point: 1.06.C of the Competition Manual makes it crystal clear that the only permitted ways to form groups is randomly or by rating. "I want to play with my buddy" does not fall into either of these categories. You have signed up for a competition, handpicking your cardmates goes against that.
