All;
It's here: the 40th Annual Duck Golf! Since 1983, this has been a Burke Lake tradition, and we're proud to be here carrying it on. Please read this entire email: you are responsible for the information contained within.
Off the bat, we want to give huge thanks to our longtime title sponsor and benefactor, Ryan Rice and Rice Properties Group. Thank you, Ryan, for everything you do for the community!
First: the basics. Note the schedule on the Disc Golf Scene page for your competition day. Watch the players' meeting video. Download the attached course map. Tournament Central will be near the tee for Field Hole F, next to the main parking lot along the mini-golf fence. We will not be playing holes 1-6. Instead we will play holes 7-10, then Field Holes A-F, then holes 11-18. Holes on the regular course will play from the long tees (except 7, which only has one tee). The Field Holes have natural tees marked by flags and play to blue Prodigy T-1 baskets.
Second: hole assignments, player packs and payouts, and scoring.
Your hole assignments will be posted on the relevant PDGA event pages.
Draft assignments are up now, but may change if players continue to drop. Speaking of drops, please note that we only will be able to provide you with a refund at this point if a player is available to take your spot from the waitlist (need not be from your division).
Projected Pro division payouts are linked on the Sunday page. We are currently estimating $1,750 added cash for this event. Amateurs will receive a shirt, disc, tulip glass (which you can pick up at Fair Winds Brewing Company), and a pair of handwarmers. Everyone will receive lunch: beef hot dogs for meat eaters and Impossible sausages for vegans (buns are dairy-free). An array of condiments and toppings will be available. As ever, you must bring your own ketchup.
Our expectation is that every player will keep an independent scorecard for the entire group. The official scoring method for this event is the PDGA Digital Scorecard, which can be accessed through your web browser or the new PDGA Live app (highly recommended). The passwords are:
[redacted]
If you need a paper scorecard, please let me know by 5:00pm tomorrow and I will have one available for you.
Third: conduct. This is a public, multi-use park that we share with many other park users. While we have a permit and exclusive use of the fields, other park users may still attempt to picnic, have photo shoots, or set up pickup soccer matches. If this happens:
(1) Be polite and inform them that there's an event going on. Thank them for their understanding.
(2) If they refuse to move, don't escalate the situation and stay calm.
(3) Call Sully at (703) 992-3035 and he will deal with it.
There may also be casual players on the course. We do not have (and cannot get) exclusive use of the disc golf course. If you see casual players, politely inform them of the event, and frame the issue as one of inconvenience to them ("you're absolutely welcome to play! however, you'll probably be waiting on every hole."). As before, call Sully if there's a problem.
Do not litter. Littering will mean your instant disqualification.
This is a PDGA event, so do not drink alcohol, smoke marijuana, or take illegal drugs on the property. Violating the alcohol and drug rules will mean your instant disqualification.
Fourth: fun! There is one exception to the alcohol rules above: thanks to our partnership with Fairfax County and Burke Lake Park, we will have a beer garden, provided by Fair Winds Brewing Company, open at lunch and after round 2. At the beer garden, you may consume only the provided beer, and only inside the fence enclosure.
There will also be a players' party at Fair Winds on Saturday night immediately following awards. All players and significant others are welcome!
Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions. We're excited to see you all!
Sincerely,
Sully, Gabi, and Bolden
