Thank you to all the participants of the first annual Mycelium Open in Troy's Prospect Park!
The weather was perfect with almost zero wind. Competition was fierce yet friendly.
The FA3 Division card was split up with six competitors on two cards. Play exhibited the best of disc golf with friendly mentoring amidst the competition but after the 18 holes we had a first place playoff and that's where the kid gloves came off. The lead player from each card came to do battle. Mel G and Shaina DeSapio played even off of a hole 18 tee. After doing the same on hole one it was back to 18 for a triple overtime playoff! Mel G threw a sweet drive off the tee only to have it take the Hole 18 roll and that left the door open for Shaina who took the first ever Mycelium Championship!
The MA3 men’s division was an enigma with talented players arriving from far and wide with several Darkhorse walk ups just making the 8:45 cut off!
Physical limitations were tested and only one injury reported as our own Jeff Daniels took a head over heels tumble on hole 7 while doing a Halloween back flip off the T of the Troy Stonehenge!
That may have cost Jeff as the toll of dragging a dead log over the course dropped him to a second-place tie with Ben Houck in another fierce playoff for a Mycelium prize. Ben Houck threw a perfectly parked throw that a healthy Jeff could have bested but not this day.
The second-place drama was exciting as there was no drama in Earl Steenberg’s calm and assured demeanor as he walked away with the MA3 first place finish and the best score of the whole tournament with a cool 51.
Congratulations Earl!!
In the Pro Division the story of the day was "Who is going to give the Wizard of Hogwarts, Greg Kurtz a challenge." Our Tournament custom disc Trophy creator Tyler Quinn and newcomer Dylan Courtney and I were willing and after 18 holes it was only 3 strokes separating the division with Dylan walking away with the Mushroom Trophy!
