Welcome to the 2023 Free State Fling presented by GRIPeq!
PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE EMAIL. WE ARE NOT HAVING AN OFFICIAL PLAYER MEETING…THIS EMAIL IS YOUR PLAYER MEETING.
If you are receiving this email because you used your email when signing up another player for the event, please forward this info to that player.
THANK YOU SPONSORS:
Thank you to Grip Equipment for their title sponsorship. Their support means a lot to me and Maverick DG. I personally carry a Grip Bag and think you should too.
THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS:
Thank you to Kyle Coleman for his continued work to make Bloomington playable all summer and fall!
ABOUT THE FREE STATE FLING’S NAME:
The town of Bloomington is now underwater where Clinton Lake is. Bloomington used to be a stop on the underground railroad for runaway slaves. The stamp this year is about The Freedom Rings Sculpture that is east of Hole 16. You can read more about the sculpture here:

DIVISIONS / DATES:
Everyone is playing two rounds on Saturday, August 19th on a shotgun start. Round one hole assignments have been posted. HOWEVER - Please recheck your hole assignments after you check in Saturday morning to make sure they did not change.
https://www.pdga.com/tour/event/67638
Round two shotgun start time and hole assignments will be posted at the same link.
>> As a reminder - you still need to check in with the Course Director from 7:30 - 8:15 Saturday morning.
LATE WITHDRAWAL / NO-SHOW
At this point, it is too late to receive a refund. However, if you notify me at 785-764-2229 prior to tee time, you will still receive your player pack for an Am.
To cancel, text or call your name and division, with comment you are canceling to 785-764-2229.
PARKING -
Please only park in the main course in-between Holes 18-10-1. All other areas could potentially be along an Out of Bounds line and affect play. The one exception is the road to the boat docks in between 16 & 17.
RESTROOMS
The vault toilets at 13/14/18 will be open. The flush toilets near Hole 1 and practice basket are open.
CHECK-IN
Check-in is from 7:30 am - 8:15 am at the parking lot near Hole 1. All players, Pro and Am, need to check in. If you don’t check in, I will presume you are a No Call, No Show and you may be scratched from the event.
SCORING
We will be using the PDGA digital scoring system. (This is not Udisc). To access it, go to pdga.com/score. Enter in the password, then your last name or PDGA number, and the card will pull up. I will have paper scorecards as a backup. You can also use udisc as a backup. However, to submit the scores, it needs to be done through the PDGA scoring system.
Password: FSF2023
CADDY BOOK
Hole lengths, pars, and OB rules are listed in the PDGA app while you are keeping score. You can also go to this link to find each course set up here:

COURSE CONDITIONS
Bloomington is mostly cart friendly with the exception of a couple of bridges that have poor transitions and getting to Hole 5’s tee box. There is a shortcut for it though so you don’t have to fully climb the hill with a cart.
AMATEUR PLAYER PACKS
Ams will receive a Discraft tournament stamped disc
Discraft choices:
ESP Zone
Z Buzzz
ESP Undertaker
Z Raptor
ESP Thrasher

WATER
IT IS GOING TO BE VERY HOT. BRING
GALLONS OF WATER FOR YOUR SELF.
While there will be water coolers on the course I fully expect they will go dry at some point. They will be refilled as soon as possible, but you need to be prepared to bring enough water for yourself. The water on the course is a back-up.
BONUS PRIZES
ROUND ONE PRIZE: If you have the Hot Round of your whole division (not your card, but the whole division) you will get a Hot Round mini. They are not much, only a mini, but the only way you can get one is by having the Hot Round, so it’s kind of cool.
ROUND TWO PRIZE: If you win your card, you win a prize from the white prize box that is called the Toy Box. Typical items are sticker sheets, can coolers, license plate frames, etc.
LUNCH BREAK / ROUND 2
We will have an approximately 1 hour lunch break after the last card is completed before starting round 2. The Clinton Store will be serving a lunch special:
Lunch will be pulled pork sandwich, chips, pasta salad, brownie, and your choice of drink (Gatorade, can of beer, can of pop, or two bottles of water for $15.
I would ask that you consider this as it is a family-run store and is the only option for lunch that will assure you to get back in time for round 2. If you try to drive to Lawrence you will likely be late for Round 2.
Round 2 tee time and hole assignments will be posted here:
https://www.pdga.com/tour/event/67638
IF YOU NEED TO WITHDRAW
If you decide for any reason that you don’t or can’t play the second round, please tell Matthew Schulze, the On-Site Tournament Director. This is crucial as it will affect others on how the second round is organized.
ACE / CTP FUND
If you paid into the ace fund during registration you are included in this. If you didn’t, you can sign up when you check in if you want to. It costs $5. If neither applies, skip to next section.
Thank you for participating into the Ace Fund. With all Maverick DG events, the Ace fund is paid out as large ticket items and not as cash. This is one of the ways MavDG is ‘maverick’ and it helps to pay for tournament expenses. I determine the payout items so that what is given out is higher than what was paid in so both the winner and the tournament benefits.
PRIZES:
The prizes for the ace pool will be GRIPeq bags. There will be a black AX5 (retails $259) and a tan G-Series (retails $99)
Please note: If there is a tie for first place in your division, we will start the CTP game before your playoff is done. If you super duper rather play the CTP game than for the First Place Trophy, you can always forfeit the playoff. I would ask you though - why are you playing in a tournament if not to win the prize of First Place?
For the full rules on how the Ace fund works, you can go here:
CTP / Ace throw off - Maverick style
Instructions on how to update your registration to include the ace fund:
On a computer, or mobile browser, under the Registered Players section, you will see your name as registered. Click EDIT and add the ace fund.
AWARDS / PAYOUTS
To decrease the amount of congregation we will not have a formal awards ceremony. The award will given out as soon as the clear winner is determined after the second round. PRO PAYOUTS can be either a check picked up at the ship or mailed to you, or PayPal Goods and Services (winner pays fees) based on what you chose during registration. AM PAYOUTS are redeemable at Maverick Disc Golf in Olathe, KS. If you proactively request one, you can also redeem it at our webstore maverickdiscgolf.com. If you choose the webstore, it will charge you shipping.
TROPHIES
There is a First Place trophy for all divisions that pre-registered by Thursday (yesterday).
1st, 2nd, and 3rd for Recreational.
PDGA POSTING
My goal is to have the 'official' results posted to the PDGA by Sunday evening.
THANK YOU
I want to sincerely thank you for choosing to play in Maverick Disc Golf events, and particularly the Free State Fling. If you are a first timer, I hope you enjoy it!
