Sir I review everyone's rating before all my PDGA events. I know the individual you are speaking of and he has only 1 career win in the MA4 division. This is his 1 and only PDGA event. I know the rules and have already before your notification, how a player can be rated that high and only have 1 event under their belt. This is where I loose faith in referring to the PDGA rating system as it is set to be used as a guideline as well. However, with your notification, I am about to send out a mass email and have each individual review their rating to make sure they have placed themselves into the right division. The unfortunate thing that you will see happen is that an intermediate or even an advanced player may have a low rating so you could be competing with those advanced players. I personally use outside of PDGA events, the number of years a person has thrown, how many tournaments have they particapated in and how many have they actually placed. This makes more sense to make sure the field of play is even and everyone has a great time. For an example, I am rated below 900 and have thrown for 4 plus years and I consider myself an intermediate to advanced type of disc golfer. I could sign up for the Rec division based on my rating but I am not that kind of person and neither is the gentleman in question. Justin, great point and thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Not a problem. This is definitely something that I look at Sir and whether it be sanctioned or not, it is the responsibility of the individual to be fair and compete at the skill level they are currently at. Most have been very receptive of my intentions but unfortunately there have been a couple that were not and they do not attend my events. We have still remand friends they just do not. I believe it is more of being embarrassed by being called out but it is what it is. I just want everyone to have fun and a great time, sanctioned or not. There is a bit of an issue with the PDGA rating scale just as you are seeing with this individual. The only penalty, would be disqualification, I have yet to have to enforce this on anyone. Unfortunately you know as well as I, there are those who are out to just have the win. A C-Tier event is doing your individual best, the win is the reward for doing so. The Rec and Novice groups are the hardest to govern as we all want to have the win and forget about the fun and hanging out with other disc golfers. Any TD will tell you when things like this happen and they do happen at this level of play, it breaks our hearts and puts the event with a black eye. Sad because of all the hardwork from everyone including yourself to make an event fun and successful. Thank you again Justin. Looking forward to seeing you Sunday.

Rick, I’ll move up. Just so there’s no confusion about why I entered rec. I started playing in may of last year. Played rec in the harvest open and got wrecked. Finished +30. Next tournament which was your tournament last year, I entered novice because I felt I was still a beginner. I threw from the shortest tees. After that, I felt that I should move up to rec. I shot the round of a lifetime to get that rating and wish I hadn’t. I didn’t play any more tournaments this year. But to make sure everyone feels comfortable, I’ll move up. I’m hoping that this creates more dialogue around our sport and how ratings can impact a player. I think a minimum number of events can maybe come into play. Some guys in rec have been playing 3 or 4 years. How do we know they aren’t sandbagging? Can go both ways.

I only started playing in July and consider myself fairly new. I'm coming from over 2 hours away and have never played here so I will be playing it blind. And I also have never played a singles tournament.. is novice a fair division for someone to start?

Same here Gary. First sanctioned tourney I’ve ever played and I started last august trying out disc golf. I feel novice is the spot for me right now that is.

I was there last year. Playing a few months and my 2nd event. Got my butt kicked in rec the first event and scored well in this event in novice last year. Felt it was time to go up. Unfortunately I scored too well they I have to go up 2 levels. I’d say go novice and if you find it easy, move up next time!

To All and thank you for all the responses and assisting this guy. What is paramount for me running any event whether it is sanctioned or not, that everyone has a great time. The structure of the design at Sunset is have fun with the course, that is why I have set 4 tee pad locations. Each location is set through reseach and data gathering to accomodate any disc golfer and the community. This course is a family course but also a course to match your own personal skill level and have the chance to try different things that work for you. Even though there are set mechanics, just like our fingerprints, we all throw differently and that is what I kept in mind during the design process. With that, I am still evaulating the course pretty much 24/7 for you, your family and the community. As like we are still learning to be better disc golfers, we are still learning the course for these improvements. Safety is always first and as a TD, I also want to make sure that the playing field is a fair one. Some rules that have been but into place are there for a reason and PDGA has done an outstanding job developing these rules with the understanding that there will always be continuous improvement and they are quick to help any of us with outstanding support. Most organizations do not do this. So anytime a TD reaches out to you, know that they are on your side, they want you to have a memorable experience, they want you to be in the division that best fits your skill set. Thank you all for what you do for disc golf and your support to all the efforts to have a successful event. YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!!!
