Indy Disc Golf Club only has one PDGA-certified Tournament Director. That person is unavailable to run this event. The group of guys that volunteered to administer the event decided not to sanction it. Even without the administrative turnover for this particular event, though, it's unlikely that Fall Classic would have been PDGA-sanctioned. Too many costs associated with sanctioning an event from our perspective as event-organizers. Biggest hurdle in past years has been coming up with a merchandise pay out system for amateurs for sanctioned events, especially after the Club stopped keeping an inventory of discs. It's usually much simpler to leave the event unsanctioned and pay amateur divisions cash via PayPal same as the professional divisions. We have no desire to make money off amateur divisions via the margin on player packs or the margin on amateur merchandise pay outs. Indy Disc Golf Club has an event liability insurance policy independent of the PDGA that allows us to organize leagues and tourneys in Indy Parks, so the PDGA-provided event insurance is not a major incentive. Main sanctioning benefit to us would be access to Tournament Manager, but UDisc works well-enough. We understand that playing a PDGA-rated round can be a major incentive for potential event participants, but sanctioning an event is generally more of a hassle than a boon for us (plus sanctioning disincentivizes some potential participation due to the $10 non-current-PDGA fee; 100% of current Indy Disc Golf Club members can play in our non-sanctioned events for no additional cost). The Checkered Flag Open is currently our only planned PDGA-affiliated event.
