Bruce’s Bad Ass BBQ. There is a coupon in your player package for a free sandwich and a chip. This can be redeemed Friday – Sunday at Mason County Park.
This is the first year that I have been the Tournament Director of this event. Here are some of the things that I wanted to improve upon for this year’s event. Better course signage. Bigger player package. Larger player payouts. Increased social activities. Bring Whiskey Creek back into the rotation with improvements. Bring in another course to eliminate the less popular Scottville.
The staff of this event worked 100s of hours to bring you the best tournament experience possible. This is an EXCEPTIONALLY large disc golf event. We will have more players than at the Amateur World Championships this summer. I can guarantee before we start that everything will not be perfect. We strive to run a bigger and better tournament every year. However, please remember that we are all volunteers trying to make your weekend the best that it can be! Our enjoyment from the event, is the amount of enjoyment that you get.
Flex Awards Ceremony. Some people want to wait around for an awards ceremony and some people do not. In efforts to satisfy both sets of people, we are planning on doing both of these things. We will have a smaller awards ceremony at your final course of play on Sunday. If you would like to get your trophy and leave the event, you are most welcome to do so. However, if you would like to be a part of the Champions Award Ceremony which will be held at Mason County Park following the completion of all the divisions play on Sunday, we would love for you to be a part of it! However, if you choose to not take part in this Champions Awards Ceremony, you will still be recognized as one of the new 2023 State Disc Golf Champions. Your Course Directors will remind you about this and ask if you plan to attend.
Link to Player Guide. The link will be posted online on Monday. I would STRONGLY recommend downloading this to your device due to its size.
Other Notes:
If we need to suspend play due to dangerous weather (lightning within 12 miles of the course), there will be 3 horn blasts. If the horn is sounded 3 times, please immediately mark your lie, and seek shelter in your car as fast as possible. Play will resume after there has been no lightning within 12 miles for 30 minutes. There will be a warmup period, followed by a 2-minute warning horn and then a horn to resume play. Being a tee time start, there will not be any other horns used.
Course Names. Some courses do not have a consistent naming throughout all the listings on the internet. Here are some of the alternatives you may find:
Beauty/Beast <---> Mason County
West Shore Community College <---> Labyrinth
Whiskey Creek <---> Whiskey Hills
Lake Michigan Camp <---> Fairway to Heaven
Payouts for all divisions will be posted on Friday. A Huge thanks to Discraft as the payouts are large even with the upgraded player packages due to their partnership with this event.
UDisc has all the layouts for all the courses that we are using. Please feel free to use this to assist you.
Mason County Courses will be open for practice rounds on Thursday during the Last Chance Qualifier.
Lake Michigan Camp Course has 4-5 holes that are not at all cart friendly. I would personally suggest not using a cart on this course. If possible, I would recommend switching to a carry bag.
We will have water at all the courses. This should not be your only source of drinking water while you are competing. You should bring plenty of water to keep yourself properly hydrated.
Michigan is home to many “poisonous” plant species. You should become aware of them.
There may or may not be mosquitos at your courses of play. Plan accordingly.
Please report any course issues (bees/fallen trees/hole) to your Course HQ as soon as possible. We want to address them as soon as possible and have staff available to do so.
Lastly, constructive feedback left in a direct manner is a fantastic way to help an event see where it can improve. Please feel free to see me at the event as my plan is to be available to the players all throughout the weekend or drop me an email at [email redacted]. Vitriolic online bashing is not a terrific way to help an event see where it can improve, and the staff of this event will not be participating in it. I am not saying you cannot post what you want to post and where you want to post it. You totally can! We, however, will not be addressing that.
I cannot wait to award all these 2023 State Champions!
Straight Drives,
Mark Stephens
