Thank you for registering for the Inaugural Disc Golf NL Club Championships. My name is Johnston Miller, the Event Director for Disc Golf NL. It is our hope that this grows into a marquee event, with players vying for spots on their club’s team. For this first year, we’re happy to get together and play in a unique format. Here’s the plan for the event, though things may change depending on final registration numbers and any concerns expressed.
Quick Summary:
There’ll be four 9-hole rounds of singles and doubles matches. Each club will pick a Club Captain that will help assign players to matches. Check-in is at 8:45AM Sunday July 13. Matchups will be emailed the night of Saturday July 12.
Format:
There will be four 9-hole rounds: two in the morning and two in the afternoon. In each round, there will be several stroke-play singles and/or doubles matches, with each match including a member/team from each club. For each match, the player/team with the lowest score gets 4 points, second place gets 3 points, third place gets 2 points, and fourth place gets 1 point, with ties splitting points (e.g., if the scores are A: -4; B: -3, C: -3; D: -1; A gets 4 points, B and C get 2.5 points, and D gets 1 point). After each round, the points for each club will be tallied. The club with the most points at the end of the four rounds will be declared the 2025 Disc Golf NL Club Champions.
Due to uneven numbers among the clubs, some players will not be able to play every round, but clubs should ensure everyone plays as equal an amount as possible.
Schedule:
8:45AM: Check-in at lodge; Pre-round talk
9:00-10:30AM: Round 1
10:45-12:15PM: Round 2
12:15-1:15PM: Lunch
1:15-2:45PM: Round 3
3-4:30PM: Round 4
Captains:
Each club must select a Club Captain, who will be the main point of contact between the Event Director and the clubs. Club Captains should be available at the Runway Rumble after party at the Corner Pocket to help determine matchups. If there is no Club Captain available, the Event Director will select the club’s matchups. The schedule, starting holes, etc. will be emailed to all competitors the night before the event.
Rules:
This is not a PDGA-sanctioned event, but all PDGA rules will be followed and enforced. Groups should come to a consensus on any rule interpretations. As this is the first event of its kind, there may be issues that arise. Any matters that impact competitive balance will be voted on by the Club Captains. In the event of a tie, the Event Director will cast the deciding vote.
Doubles rounds will be “Best Throw” doubles (https://www.pdga.com/rules/official-rules-disc-golf/appendix-b). At the start of the hole, each team member throws a tee shot (the team decides who throws first on a given hole) following the tee order (i.e. Player A from Team 1, then Player B from Team 1, then Player A from Team 2…). Each team decides which one of their lies to throw their next throws from, continuing until one of the throws lands in the basket. Your team’s score for the hole is the number of unique lies your team throws from before landing in the basket (e.g., both players on a team throw a tee shot; the team decides to use Player B’s lie; Player A putts first, misses and rolls out of bounds; Player B putts next, also misses but lands close to the basket; Player A taps in from Player B’s lie; Player A does not putt; the team’s score for the hole is 3).
The start times listed in the schedule above are a guideline. Doubles rounds will likely take longer than singles rounds. After the last group completes their match, the Event Director will confirm the start times for the next round, with at least 15 minutes between rounds 1 and 2 and between rounds 3 and 4 and at least 1 hour as a lunch break between rounds 2 and 3. Any player/team that does not show up for their start time will receive a score of Par +4 for every hole that they miss, and zero points for the match if they miss five or more holes.
Layouts:
Everyone will play the Red layout. Each match is 9 holes. Starting holes will be chosen to minimize walking to starting holes and from finishing holes. In cases where a doubles match and a singles match start on the same hole, the singles match will play first. The assigned holes for each match will be made known to Club Captains before groups are assigned.
Scorekeeping:
Each match will be scored using UDisc. Before the round starts, one player in the match will set up a card. Select the “Runway Rumble Red 18” layout; select/add your card mates; choose singles/teams (as appropriate); for doubles matches, ensure teams are correct; and start round. Select your starting hole and keep score.
At the end of the round, the card must confirm scores and submit them to the Event Director by taking a screenshot and texting it to 709-639-4529 (I’ll be around and we can do this together).
Discussion:
I’ve posted this to the Comments section of the Disc Golf Scene page. I encourage anyone with questions to post them there. Somebody else might have the same question and it’ll save me answering it twice (I’m also open to discussion on everything in here). I will send a note with any changes before the event and also summarize the rules at check-in on Sunday morning.
Also, feel free to use the comment section of DGS as the official trash-talk HQ.
Chowder Cup:
The format for this event is inspired by the Chowder Cup, a yearly competition between teams in the Maritime provinces. We would love to send a team representing Newfoundland and Labrador this year. This year’s Chowder Cup will be held in Wallace, Nova Scotia on November 8/9. If you are interested in competing in this year’s Chowder Cup, please reach out.
