WE'RE BACK!
With the private Charlotte matchplay closed, it's time to run back the CROWNTOWN MATCHPLAY series!
If you're unfamiliar, this is a matchplay open to the public, where selected captains will draft their teams for the season that will compete over an 8 week season. Points will be awarded based off wins and ties of each match throughout the season, then the teams will be seeded accordingly. Then we get to the playoffs, with the winning team getting paid out in cash to all members!
For those who don't know, instead of normal stroke play, you will be matched up with a single opponent. You'll both play the hole, and whoever scored the least strokes that hole, wins the hole and are now "Up 1". If you tie, the hole is a wash and you continue to the next. Whoever ends the round with the most won holes, wins the match. Birdies, pars, bogeys, none of it matters, just hole by hole against your opponent.
Each team will travel through 8 courses here in the area. The home team each week will select a 12 hole layout for everyone to play. Teams are decided by a snake style draft done by selected captains. A questionnaire will go out just before the season starts that will ask your skill level in certain areas of the game, how many weeks you can attend, and if you'd like to be considered for captain or not. Each player will be guaranteed at least 4 matches played.
Looking to play with someone specific? We will have OPEN pairings! You two will be locked in to be drafted together, adding some extra stress to the captains when they give up two draft picks back to back. Both players need to list their partner in the notes/comments when registering.
One key difference in this league is flexibility. It's the Summer, people have plans, and making it on a certain day every week can get challenging. So, we ask our captains to create matchups Sunday night, to free up the players to meet up with their counterpart at their respective courses at a time that works best for them that week. There will be a rule though that states a majority of matches MUST occur on Thursdays, as that's the day the CDGC has allotted us to play.
As stated previously, the winning team will receive a CASH payout! Last year in our inaugural run, each member received $62, a nice 3x their buy-in! Looking to expand on that with more players this season.
I'd also like to mention, with the help of engineer Evan Furr, and Excel whiz Bobcat Buckley last year, we partnered up to create a ratings formula that goes in to your Matchplay ability. Normal stroke play, one bad hole can really blow up a round. But Matchplay, it only counts as one hole, and you have 11 others to fight back and try and win! So someone 900 rated in PDGA, could be a 975 matchplay shark ready to pounce!
