I personally think that trophy only for Adv Am players is a good idea, it will get the ones that are sandbagging to move up to open. Yes, if you are truly an AM player, I can see the disappointment if you play to win plastic in order to build up a stock of discs. I was disappointed years back when I went to one of the largest amateur events at the Shoe Sensation in Bowling Green, KY and finished in the top ten, and only got a trophy. Had only been playing for a little over 2 years and was my first advanced tournament, but made me strive to be better so I could compete for money. I can see both sides of the picture and understand both.

One of the biggest tournaments of the year, The Memorial, is trophy only. Personally, as a forever Am player, I see your points but after awhile, what exactly are you playing for? Is it the plastic or is it the win? If the funds brought into tournaments was dedicated back to the AMs in the form of an excellent player's pack (see above mentioned tournament) then trophy only is the way to go. I don't know why the assumption is that the monies are automatically going towards the Pros Trophy only events.

in my opinion, If PDGA tournaments start going to this trophy thing then they might draw some people away from tournaments and weaken the sport. Disc golf is growing STRONG and I fear the growth will be on a fast decline if this turns into a trend. I'm all for a chance at a trophy but all the time, not really. These are little tourney's with most likely cheap plastic or homemade but sentimental trophy's I'd imagine. If it was a trophy like what the NFL,NHL and or NBA get then heck yeah, im down ALL the time...lol. Lets face it, most people aren't wanting to just come spend there good money and so called "pay the Pro's" and give there money away without a chance of getting something more out of it than a "nice seeing ya, come again" speel. Like Bob said the top 15 or 30 should get a little more in return. I love you Sharon and LeRoy for alot you stand for and have done for the sport and your our course for that matter but maybe having the First Family in Disc Golf and Two world class Pro's as Children its harder to see the Rec's, Int's , lower level players point of views and where there coming from.

Please don't slam me in the dirt or kill whatever name i may have I can do that myself just fine, im just giving an opinion.

I can at least trade the disc for one I may throw or sell it cheap to someone else, don't know anyone who would trade me a disc for a trophy, or buy that trophy. And let me get this correct as well, If 30 people are in my division, only the top three get trophies. In a normal payout PDGA tourney, 15 of the 30 typically would be involved in the plastic payout. I never finish top three, but I often finish top half and that disc you're sure I wouldn't want, sure seems like some kind of reward for my time and efforts. If I wanted trophies, I'd still be bowling. Hopefully, this trophy only thing doesn't catch on or I'll go from 30 tournies a year to fishing on weekends. Wish I was good enough to play pro because all this is, is a way to exploit Ams to pay the pro's. No thanks...enough of that already.

I work 6 days a week and sparingly pick a few weekends to take vacation to play our larger NY tourneys..If any of you have a chance to play the Beachwood classic 6 this year (July 15-17..pros play all 3 days, ams play sat sun) sign up quick because there is usually a wait list. Great corse on a private farm, camping, meals, all the beer you can drink, great time. had to plug this event because it is that much fun. Anyways. I will making the drive down to play your champion creek challenge and really look forward to playing this course and meeting all you ohio golfers. i cant wait! sounds like a blast.

These sort of events are starting to happen more often lately. the A-tier Masters Cup last year in Santa Cruz was one and there is an upcoming tourney in Mich. the same way. The Masters Cup wasn't cheap to enter. We are making the entry fees lower than normal. Let's face it for years most of the stuff people did win they didn't really want and end up trading or giving it away. Jay, you are uniquely situated to handle good am payouts, and you do this very well.
We are of the mindset that first and foremost the event is about the competition and playing on a challenging layout. If you are in this to win fantastic prizes or big money, you're in the wrong sport. We're not going to have a ring of fire that lasts an hour like the "Revenge", but we are working to make solid player packs for this tourney. I don't know of any successful tournaments where they don't use money from the Ams to boost the pro payout. It's all about sponsors, Jay. Show me a sugar daddy and we'll run a Supertour event every year. I've never had anybody say we had mediocre payouts in Medina (am or pro), but we're trying something sorta new here to make it cheaper for players to compete.

Fully agree, i used to pay about $300-400 a weekend to race my sport bike at nelsons ledges race course and all over, just to win a plastic trophy.

True i do this to spread the good word of disc golf and to see everyone else enjoying what i like to do. Throw a Frisbee

maybe i need a lesson on this part, cause i dont remember it when you me helped with shoot the moon payouts at fox creek back in 08, so i have abandoned it in my payouts, but i just run fun dinker events for PDGA points and charities.

i think if more people got involved they could be run on sponsors only, instead of dipping...pros(not touring pros) want a big payout? find some sponsors for your home event the more sponsors the bigger the pro payout. lots of people want things but no one wants to motivate and do any of it.

As we reviewed our course par it was evident that for quite a few holes (long tees) a player has to have a lot of shots in their bag in order to get a three. A few holes such as, 2, 12, and 15 will give a 950+ rated player a 4 most of the time. And the scorecards pretty much substantiated this. Along with the possibility of OB in the creek on eleven holes, and the tournament OB lines we believe par is no less than 57 from the long tees. The short tees don't really give a player a big break. The shorter distance to the basket might make a 3 a bit easier, but you still have throw good smart shots. A number of holes share long/short tees. Par from the short tees for this tournament is no less than 55. We're proud that the oldest Ohio course is still very challenging. Or....is it just a lot of fun?
