Congratulations to Coachful -- 2019 Can Am Cup repeat champs !
Twelve teams invaded Brown's Farm to battle for the right to have their names engraved on the Cup for the 21st time. Five 9-hole matches in two pools, two cross-over matches, semi-finals then finals tested not only the players’ disc golf talent, but their mental strength and physical endurance as well.
Ultimately, the team of Bobby Jones, Chelsea Carl, Dan Brooks-Wells, Justin Whitney, Jeremy Hoeltke and Jamie Rockefeller prevailed in the ninth match of the weekend, winning 4/6 individual matches over their Rochester doppelgänger "Coachless." "Coachful" gained the champion's share of the $2000 purse and possession of The Cup for the next year.
Coachless broke their 8th place tournament seeding to claim second place and 27% of the loot. Congrats to Mike Herzog, Sherry Herzog, Michael Falconio, Carson Reber, Mike Neufeglise and Nick Walker for their strong play.
Mother Huckers beat Jimmy Stewarts in the all-Pittsburgh 3rd place match by one hole on a tie-breaker after both teams each won 3 of the individual matches.
Eight other teams from New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New York came, played, won, lost and tied as many as 7 matches or 63 holes of disc golf match play. Tri-State Shockers, GRDGC, Good, Bad & Buckley, Skvader, Flaggerdoots, Thunderhawks, Chainbiters, and One Tree to Beat will have the first chance to return and play in the event in 2020.
Each of the twelve teams picked their MVP who was awarded a Bag O’ Stuff, including Leroy’s game-worn jerseys donated by Team Jenkins, Great Disc Golf Holes of the World collector discs and minis donated by Grip It and Rip It Disc Golf.
17 players were named Spirit Award winners by their peers for their demonstrated effort, grace and spirit of the game. Prizes were donated by each of the teams, Trader Joe and Innova Disc Golf.
Attagirls and Attaboys to Tara Dixon, Maria Montano, Margaret Sassamen, Clint Eastland, Graham Riggles, Sid Olcott, Jamie Rockefeller, Jordan Bochenski, Ben Hoolahan, Jack Dobmeier, Hugh Perkins, Joe Johnson, James Johnson, Matt Rosier, and Bart Sheer.
Players fortunate enough to have competed this year were in it for more than the money. They were rewarded with an exhilarating environs experience of throwing fairways through the shady canopy of mature hardwoods and conifers, over hilly grass-mown fairways to baskets perched on precipitous ravines and ponds. The players were feted with lunch and dinner on Saturday and vouchers for whatever merch they desired, thanks to Pittsburgh Flying Disc. Baked goods prizes for Long Drive on hole 18 and CTPs on Hole 4 were again donated by our hosts, Mrs. Brown, and the Brown family led by Tournament Administrator Rex Brown.
3 bonfires at the campsite kept the mountain pies and s'mores cooking well into the starry and lunar-lit nights. Thirsts were quenched with flowing spring water, apple, berry and mango moonshine, and many crafty brewskis. Cheers of "Das Boot!" "Stella!" and Deee-Lite, ACDC and Billy Joel singalongs echoed off the ridges of Western New York's Lake Erie moraine.
