A little Q&A from a question I received on Facebook from Tim Beal.
My answers to Tim's questions are CAPITALIZED:
we both throw from our respective tees and if either of us aces the hole, our score is 1. TRUE
But if neither of us ace, we can choose either location for us both to throw our second shot, right? TRUE
So let's say we choose the guy's spot and one of us hits their second shot: that's a birdie so it still doesn't matter which if us threw it, score is 2, right? TRUE
OK, but if we both miss our second shot, what happens then? Must we both shoot from the same second location? YES, YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO SHOOT FROM THE SAME LOCATION, HENCE BEST SHOT.
Because if the female hits from the male's second throw, or the male hits from the female's second throw, we score a 3; whereas if only the male hits from the spot of his second throw, it sounds like our score is 4 (3 + 1 penalty). TRUE,
TYPICALLY WHAT WILL HAPPEN IS THAT THE MALE WILL THROW FROM THE BLUE TEE, THE FEMALE FROM THE RED. THE MALE USUALLY WILL THROW PAST THE FEMALE BUT ONLY BY A LITTLE BIT. AT THIS POINT YOU SHOULD DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT YOU WANT TO TAKE HER SHOT. IF YOU HAVE A RUN AT A BIRDIE FROM THE MALE'S SHOT THEN TAKE THAT, BUT IF BOTH SHOTS ARE GOING TO BE UPSHOTS THEN THE BETTER BET WOULD BE TO TAKE THE FEMALE'S SHOT (IF THEY AREN'T TOO FAR APART FROM EACH OTHER).
I like the idea of all players having a role in the scoring but it feels like the formula is heavily weighted (even worse than Best Disc doubles) in the favor of teams where one of the players can consistently birdie holes on his/her own. ACTUALLY THIS IS FALSE, AND THIS IS THE REASON FOR THE MARK STILES REMIX. WITH THE MALE'S TEEING OFF FROM THE BLUE TEES IT MAKES IT VERY HARD TO GET WITHIN THE PUTTING GREEN (ON MOST HOLES), THEREFORE LEVELING THE PLAYING FIELD
