Thursday jazz music option. Guys are really good, classy venue too. The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra will present "Local Boy Makes Good" featuring Frank Basile on baritone saxophone and Jonah Bennett on bass, the winner of the 2019 Young Jazz Artist Competition. The concert begins at 7:30 PM on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at The Cornhusker Marriott Hotel, 333 South 13th Street, in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra will be performing "Tricotism" by Charles Mingus, "How Insensitive" by Antonio Carlos Jobim, and "Booke Ends" by Tom Kubis with Jonah Bennett.
Frank has sent some music from his experiences in New York City: "Something Different" by Cannonball Adderley, "Blues in a Minute" from the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis big band, "Sophisticated Lady" by Billy Strayhorn, and two pieces for an 8-piece band. He will also play two tunes from our library: "Up For The Count" by Dave Sharp and "The A & J Express", a baritone saxophone duet.
An Omaha native, Basile was the winner of the first ever NJO Young Jazz Artist Competition in 1996. Frank Basile has been fortunate to establish himself as one of today's most in-demand baritone saxophonists. After graduating with honors and a bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas, Basile moved to New York City in 2001 and was accepted into Julliard’s first Jazz Studies program. Basile has been called upon to perform, record, and tour the world with many of jazz’s finest musicians and ensembles. In addition to performing regularly in some of New York’s major jazz clubs, Basile has maintained a private studio for the past decade and has served as an adjunct faculty member at The New School. In addition to his activities as a sideman and educator, Basile also takes an active role as leader of his own quartet, quintet, and sextet. To date, Basile has released three recordings as a leader, and his band has headlined at many of New York's major jazz clubs.
Jonah Bennett is a sophomore at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. He is currently working towards a degree in Music Education. In the seventh grade, Jonah began studying bass under the instruction of Dave Klein, retired orchestra director of Kearney High School. Since then, Jonah has been an active musician since high school, winning the Greely Jazz Festival Outstanding Performer Award and Omaha Jazz Festival Outstanding Soloist Award under the instruction of Nathan Lefeber at Kearney High School. Through his time at UNL, Jonah has studied with Dr. Hans Sturm and Bobby Scharmann and has had the opportunity to perform with many groups at UNL, including the Big Band, Undergraduate Jazz Combo 1, and the Symphony Orchestra.
