Looking forward to tomorrow! We did get to practice Lake Arvesta once last week and I have a couple of questions about specific holes. I'll ask here to make sure they won't be surprise questions at the players' meeting.
On the gold layout there's a double-mando wooded hole, pretty short around 180' if memory serves. I didn't see a drop zone on the signage, nor did I find one. What happens when players miss the mandos? Will they have to actually unwind like in the old days or is there a DZ I didn't see somewhere? Sorry for not remembering the hole number, but it's the only one like it.
Interestingly, there was a water carry hole elsewhere that also didn't list a DZ on the sign, but I found one halfway up the fairway after the water carry, and it was, in fact, labeled for that hole. So the signage didn't always reflect DZ realities, although it's possible my eyes are so bad I missed it on the sign.
Second question, regarding the double-island #18. There's some confusion on my part here because I remember there being a DZ in each island. So...If I were to tee off and go for the riskier long island, and land out of bounds, would I get to take my stroke penalty and attempt my 3rd from THAT island's DZ, or would I have to come back and play the DZ in the first island? Perhaps the second island's DZ is only useable if you've already landed in-bounds in the first island? Perhaps you can only use the long island's DZ if you've crossed over in-bounds there? I have no idea and don't recall seeing instructions on the sign there either. In my 34 years of play I've never encountered a hole like this one.
Oh, and one more question. I played in one of the NADGT's at Meyer Broadway last year where we old guys had one of the longest walks out to start and back again when finished. Lake Arvesta is an even more vast place. Would it be possible to start/finish the age-protected players nearer to tournament central? Thank you for your consideration.
