2023 Keyblade Open Results
Thank you to the 31 people that came out for the 2023 Keyblade Open on Saturday (4/15). As you may know, this is a tournament I started in 2021 as a way to celebrate my birthday (4/17). Thank you to all those that came out and made it special! I was especially glad to see solid representation from our members in the greater Lenawee area. Praise the Lord we had BEAUTIFUL weather too!
SPECIAL THANKS to Sebastian Dunham for doing all of the custom trophies, and to Jordan Monnin & Brian Ulch for donating 7 CTP discs!
All AM divisions played a layout with a par of 56 for both rounds.

This was a tight race at the top between Gavin King & Jeremiah Peterson. After round 1, Jeremiah had a 1-stroke lead. They started round 2 on hole 10. King started the second round with 5 straight birdies (10-14). ???? Peterson would regain the lead on hole 16 though, as he found himself amid a 5 straight birdie streak of his own (13-17). ???????? On 18 things would take a drastic turn as Peterson would take a triple bogey, swinging the lead in favor of King by 2 throws. Fast forward to 4 holes left to play, Peterson was back 3 strokes. He was able to cut the deficit to 2 with a birdie on 7, following matching birdies on 6. Both took par on 8, so on the final hole (9) Peterson would need to swing 2 strokes to force a playoff. Peterson was able to throw an incredible drive to give himself a putt while King would strike an early tree, giving himself an extremely difficult upshot. He was unable to get his upshot close, missed his putt, and Peterson made a great putt for the birdie. King tapped in for bogey and we went to a playoff! I'm unsure how the playoff went but, King came out on top. Congratulations on a great tournament, Gavin! This was Gavin's first Keyblade Open win.

Michael Pirkle was able to achieve a 5-throw lead heading into round 2. The rest of the field all tied with the same deficit to Pirkle. King was able to pick up one stroke on Pirkle in the second round, but ultimately it wasn't nearly enough and Pirkle would hoist the MA50 Trophy, his first Keyblade Open win. Congratulations, Michael!

MPO (10 players, Payout to top 4) - Note MPO played hole 13 from the blue tee, 164 feet farther than the amateur division hole 13. Everything else was the same.
This one was a barn burner! After round 1, Ben Creger, Blake Hohlbein, and Jordan Monnin were all knotted up at a score of -8. The next closest players after round 1 were Aaron Tracey and Levi Peck at -3. It was fair to say this became a 3-horse race. Hohlbein started round 2 with 2 birdies (hole 1 & 2). Creger would also birdie 2 but give the throw back on 4 where he would bogey. Monnin remained steady with pars before getting things going on 5 with a nice birdie. Monnin would miss the birdie on 6, which Hohlbein and Creger would get, but would birdie 7 & 8 alongside Creger, tying things back up with Hohlbein. Hohlbein would stop the bleeding with the only birdie from the MPO field on hole 9 for the day, with a beautiful forehand roller. Creger swung right back on 10 though, with the only birdie on the lead card. Hohlbein and Creger would both birdie hole 11 while Monnin had a horrible rollaway on his birdie putt. Fortunately, he was able to clutch up and hit a long putt to save his par and remain within 2 strokes of the lead. Hohlbein took the outright lead with a birdie on hole 12, and proceeded to birdie 13 & 14 as well, alongside Monnin. Creger, unfortunately, got stuck on the par train, as he would birdie 5 straight (12-16). After 14, Monnin and Creger both sat 3 throws back of Hohlbein with 4 holes to play, three of them being the longest par 3's on the course. Monnin, with a cannon for an arm, was likely the last hope at overtaking Hohlbein for the win. Monnin picked up the birdie on the 393ft hole 15, closing the gap to 2. Things would take a turn on hole 16 as Monnin missed his line and ended up taking an untimely double bogey. Hohlbein was able to make it through the last couple of holes without too much trouble to secure the victory. This is Blake's 2nd Keyblade Open win. Happy birthday, Blake!
Honorable mention, Michael Rivamonte came back from the last card to take 4th place, shooting the tournament hot round, 47 (-9). ????Great shooting, Michael!

We hope everyone will be back next year for the 2024 Keyblade Open! It will likely be April 13th, 2024! Traditionally we have alternated the tournament (singles '21, doubles '22, singles '23) so next year would be doubles, but we may make the tournament permanently a singles tournament, and form another spring tournament as a doubles tournament. Stay tuned.
