About this tournament

Visit world.discgolfmatchplay.com for additional details.

The Dynamic Discs Match Play World Championship (MPWC) presented by Ogio will bring 64 of the top-rated and ranked disc golfers together to play a bracket-style match play event to be completed over a five-month period, culminating in the semi-finals and finals in Emporia, Kansas from October 30 to November 1. The first-place finisher in the event will win $15,000. The runner-up will win $10,000. Third and fourth places will win $5,000 and $3,000 respectively. The fifth through eighth place finishers will each win $1,000

Match play is an exciting way to compete as a disc golfer and even more exciting for fans to follow! Match play has grown in popularity and the unique format provides an opportunity for using a different strategy than what disc golfers typically employ playing traditional stroke play. The event will crown a champion who absolutely has competed successfully against the best disc golfers in the world.

HOW IT WORKS

All male disc golfers rated 900 or higher as of the April 17, 2018 ratings update will be eligible to register (discgolfscene.com).

All female golfers rated 900 or higher as of the April 17, 2018 ratings update will also be eligible to register (discgolfscene.com).

The field is capped at 64 players. If more than 64 players register to play, spots will be awarded based on PDGA ratings (as of the April 17, 2018 update). The top 4 rated women and the top 60 rated men who register will earn spots in the field. If there is a tie in ratings for the last spot(s) the player’s highest career rating will be used to break ties. If this is still a tie, a coin flip will be used. Registrants falling outside of these parameters will be refunded their entry fees in full. The MPWC is dedicated to having the top players compete in this event.

Registration will open on Friday, May 11 at noon CST and close on Friday, June 1 at noon CST.

The field will be seeded based on ratings on Sunday evening, June 3 at 7PM CST. The unveiling of the field seeding will be broadcast via Facebook Live on the Dynamic Discs Facebook page.

First Round
64 players will be required to complete the 32 first-round matches between Saturday, June 9 and Monday, July 23. Players shall coordinate with each other to determine a suitable location to complete their match. With many of the top players touring to similar tournaments during the summer months, it should be relatively easy to coordinate a time to complete the match. If a match has not been completed by Monday, July 23, it will be scheduled to be played at a course to be determined by MPWC tournament staff in/near Burlington, Kentucky on Monday, July 23 at noon CST (following the Idlewild Open). If one of the players due to play the match on Monday, July 23 is not present the present player will win by default. If two players are unable to coordinate a time to play, the MPWC tournament staff will make a decision on who advances from that match based on the efforts of the two players to make the match happen. While this is somewhat arbitrary, it seems to be the fairest way to determine who advances when players are not able to get their matches complete in the required timeframes.

Second Round
32 players will be required to complete the 16 second-round matches between Monday, July 23 and Monday, August 27. Players shall coordinate with each other to determine a suitable location to complete their match. If a match has not been completed by Monday, August 27, it will be scheduled to be played at a course to be determined in/near Leicester, Massachusetts on Monday, August 27 at noon CST (following the MVP Open at Maple Hill). If one of the players due to play the match on Monday, August 27 is not present the present player will win by default. If two players are unable to coordinate a time to play, the MPWC tournament staff will make a decision on who advances from that match based on the efforts of the two players to make the match happen.

Third Round
16 players will be required to complete the 8 third-round matches between Monday, August 27 and Monday, September 10. Players shall coordinate with each other to determine a suitable location to complete their match. If a match has not been completed by Monday, September 10, it will be scheduled to be played at a course to be determined in/near Jefferson, Vermont on Monday, September 10 at noon CST (following the PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships). If one of the players due to play the match on Monday, September 10 is not present the present player will win by default. If two players are unable to coordinate a time to play, the MPWC tournament staff will make a decision on who advances from that match based on the efforts of the two players to make the match happen.

Fourth Round
8 players will be required to complete the 4 fourth-round matches between Monday, September 10 and Monday, October 8. Players shall coordinate with each other to determine a suitable location to complete their match. If a match has not been completed by Monday, October 8, it will be scheduled to be played at a course to be determined in/near Rock Hill, South Carolina on Monday, October 8 at noon CST (following the United States Disc Golf Championships). If one of the players due to play the match on Monday, October 8 is not present the present player will win by default. If two players are unable to coordinate a time to play, the MPWC tournament staff will make a decision on who advances from that match based on the efforts of the two players to make the match happen.

Semi-Finals
4 players will be complete the 2 semi-final matches on Tuesday, October 30 in Emporia, Kansas. Details regarding times and course will be posted later. If one of the players due to play the match on Tuesday, October 30 is not present the present player will win by default.

Finals
2 players will be complete the final match on Thursday, November 1 in Emporia, Kansas. The two losing players from the semi-final matches will play in a third-place match as well on November 1. Details regarding times and course will be posted later. If one of the players due to play the match on Tuesday, November 1 is not present the present player will win by default.

PAYOUT
Competitors must complete both the semi-final and final matches to receive the payout due to the first, second, third, and fourth-place finishers.

RULES
The MPWC – Singles will adopt the match play rules as set forth by the PDGA (which includes following all standard PDGA rules of play unless superseded by the specific match play rules):
https://www.pdga.com/rules/official-rules-disc-golf/appendix-a
There are two exceptions/clarifications to these rules:
A.01.c.
A pair of opponents plays in a group with at least one other pair, or an Official.
Exception: During MPWC matches, another pair or official is not required.
A.06.b.
If a pair of players is all square at the end of the round, the match is tied. The Director decides if and how ties are to be broken.
Breaking Ties: MPWC matches that end up all square after 18 holes will begin a sudden death playoff starting on the first hole that they had begun their round on.

PROMOTING MATCHES
Once two players have decided when and where they will pay their match, this information needs to be shared with [email redacted]. We will promote your match and any related media coverage that is available. The sooner we have this information, the sooner we can start promoting.

REPORTING RESULTS
As each match is completed, the winning player should report the final score to [email redacted]. The bracket will be posted on UDisc and will be updated each time a result is reported. Results must be reported within 24 hours of a match being complete.

MEDIA
Players are encouraged to promote and possibly have someone cover (ex. Facebook Live) their matches in rounds 1 to 4. The MPWC will promote any coverage of these matches that is shared with the MPWC tournament staff. MPWC believes that the disc golf fan base will be very excited to follow the results of these matches.

REGISTRATION FEE
The entry fee for players competing in the MPWC is $150. The $9.600 gathered in entry fees will only make up a small portion of the final payout which totals $37,000.
