Tournament payouts. I have now heard from one person personally and at least one person asking about/complaining on FB about the payouts for this weekend's event. Firstly, I am not here to cheat or take your money, really, this event is run for you, I didn't get a chance to play and all I did was make it happen for you. A little breakdown on where funds went. Each AM was charged the same, $45 per player. This is not what the PDGA recommends, they recommend a tiered system where the more experienced the AM the more each will pay. I have found that if each division pays the same then there is less likely to be players bagging into lower divisions and thus playing to their competition. I believe that warrants itself based on the tightness of the fields in each division.
Payouts were done using the PDGA tables which are built into the excel spreadsheet distributed by the PDGA for turning in tournament results. This table is public knowledge, you can find it under the Tournament Directors link in the Events tab over at the PDGA.com website. The AM field is always spread much thinner, the philosophy behind this is the PDGA's own but I agree to it, it helps grow the sport by allowing more people down the line on the winning side to share the wealth. If anyone seriously believes that making money at a tournament for either side is realistic, ask any touring pro who is asking for couch space in order to save a few ducats here and there when touring. Now, where did your money go? Starting with the $45, $3 went to the PDGA for each AM player, standard fee, $1 went to the NEODGA to support our participation in the NEO point series. $17 came out for each player pack disc. I personally thought the choices available and quality there were very high end. Yes, this is an area where cost could have been kept down, if someone happens to have the money to front the disc purchase up front before the tournament please feel free to step up and offer that, otherwise, I will deal with what my merchandise handler and I can work out. No one is looking to rip you off here. An additional $4 came out to pay for tournament running costs, this includes the $75 PDGA sanctioning fee, costs for printing score cards, round cards and the bit left over (about $130) went back into the club/course. If you did the math with me, that left $20 from each player to be placed in the pool for payouts. I personally didn't think that was too ridiculous or too low. I know that some will disagree.
I appreciate all the people who are willing to talk about this to me in person. Thank you. If you feel I screwed you, sorry, it was never the intent. I have long thought the purest route would be to run a trophy only event (like The Memorial) where the vast majority of the players fee came back to you in the way of plastic and stuff. Thank you to the people who helped make this past weekend a success, as I believe it was. See you on the course.
