What is WBDGW
The World's Biggest Disc Golf Weekend (WBDGW) is an annual, global event dedicated to celebrating and promoting the sport of disc golf.
- Global Celebration: It's designed to be a worldwide coming together of disc golfers, encouraging both casual play and organized events on the same weekend.
- Inclusivity: The emphasis is on participation and fun for all skill levels, rather than strict competition, although tournaments can be part of the weekend. It aims to introduce new people to the sport and foster community among existing players.
- History: The event was created in 1991 by John Houck, a significant figure in disc golf, initially as the "World's Biggest Disc Golf Tournament" in Austin, Texas. It evolved into a global event to promote disc golf and raise money for non-profit organizations.
- Growth and Impact: At its peak, WBDGW involved hundreds of cities across numerous countries and is credited with introducing the sport to many people worldwide.
- Non-profit Transition: In recent years, WBDGW has transitioned towards becoming a non-profit organization, World's Biggest Disc Golf Wishes (WBDGW.org), with the goal of funding course development, education, and access to the sport for various groups.
- How to Participate: Individuals and clubs can register their rounds or events on the official WBDGW website to be counted in the global participation statistics. This registration is typically free
