James Coste: I came to Valdosta today and played all 27 holes

I came to Valdosta today and played all 27 holes to prepare for next Saturday. I've got a series of questions that will help me, but possibly others as well.

1. The "About" section mentions, "9:00am - First Round Starts (Look on PDGA tournament page for starting hole)". What date/time do you think we'll know what starting hole we'll be on?

2. If you know already, can you tell us which 20 holes we'll be playing round 1 and what holes we'll be playing the 2nd round?

3. I followed Udisc layout, "All 27 White Pads" today. To my surprise, after hole 5B, it jumped to hole 8, 8A, 8B, 9, 7, 6 then resumed "numerical" order from 10-18. Do you anticipate following that order for the tournament?

Cant answer #1 for you, but I can answer the rest.

#2: both rounds have been adjusted to 21 holes now. Round 1 will be holes 1-14 including 2A, 2B, 2C, 5A, 5B, 8a, 8B.
Round 2 will be 1-5 including 2A, 2B, 2C, and then hole 5A, then go straight to hole 6, then to hole 10, and then play 10-18 including 17a, 17b.

#3: yes that will be the order in which the holes will be played. We (the VDGA board) have adjusted the flow of the holes so as to minimize long walks with the new holes we have added, so that section of the course from 5B-8-8a-8B-9-7-6-10 does not go in numerical order.

I didn’t mention this in my earlier comment because it was already a long comment, but the VDGA Board Members (myself included) are working on getting holes renumbered. Like Grant mentioned, we have just within the past few months got these holes put in, and it changes the course flow. Unfortunately, 99% of the work done on Freedom Park is on a volunteer basis, as the VLPRA does not complete tasks for us, although they will pay for our supplies. I can say however that there will never be a 1-27, as we will eventually have 2 courses in Freedom Park, each being 18 holes each. We are working on trying to get everything done without having to go back and re-do things as more holes are added in the future.

Thanks for the replies. I could tell that several of the tee pads were installed recently with the concrete bags still there. I should have followed the order on the Udisc layout as it would have shortened my walk. Looking forward to being up there with the club on Saturday. The added holes were a lot of fun! Once the new tee signs are up, it would be so nice if someone would map out the various layouts. For Tom Brown, we have 4 different schemes and set the current scheme as "active" in Udisc. Visitors to the park have options to play 18 holes (long, short, JR pads) or 24 holes (long, short, JR pads). If they have Udisc, the layouts are all mapped directing people to near to where the pads and baskets are. If they don't use Udisc, the park is lacking in signage (an issue we are working to fix).

That is certainly something we could take into consideration. As I mentioned we are working to have 2 separate 18 hole courses at freedom park, the Stars course (original hole 1-11) including the lettered 2’s, 5’s and 8’s) and the Stripes course (original hole 12-18) including the lettered 17’s as well as 9 TBD holes that haven’t been created yet. Currently I believe that we have too many layouts on Udisc, but also we are in a weird transitional stage where we also have 27 current holes, but plan to not keep the course as a 27 hole course, but to take it back down to 2 sets of 18 in the future. Having few set layouts is a great idea, but I’m not sure how long it will be until we are able to do that. (Plus we will always have people wanting to play some holes on one of the courses, and the rest of their round on some of the holes on the other course.
