No one is more disappointed than I am with this announcement that the 2020 Can Am Cup Team Matchplay Championship is cancelled.
Over the past two weeks I’ve had discussions with Rex at Brown’s Farm, with team captains, with my own team members, and with my family, and I’ve come to the conclusion that with our tournament format and with as many of 75% of players planning to camp at the farm, it’s not worth the risk of anyone getting sick from COVID-19.
This pandemic has turned the world upside down, and believe me, we’ve been turning inside out to try and mitigate the possible risks with plans for social distancing, wearing masks at the barn and in close quarters on the course, and limiting communal food.
It is crazy that we have to cancel after working to get the biggest and strongest field of teams this year, but we will try again in 2021. The 16 teams that were registered in 2020 will have the first chance to register next year. I will be processing entry fee refunds (minus DGS admin fees) immediately.
Thank you to all the captains who recruited their squads and for your counsel and advice leading to this decision. I know some may think that we could have pulled this off regardless of the pandemic, but one weekend of high-spirited fun and competition is not worth the possible loss of health or life that could have resulted. Ultimately, I could not bear that responsibility.
Thanks to all the players who signed up, and I look forward to seeing you next August at Brown’s Farm.
