There are no rules per se. Some tips I would use though. #1: Always make sure you apply tape when discs are at room temperature. Try to use a quality tape if possible. Anything decent from the hardware should do. Also keep in mind you don't need 6 feet of ribbon. An arms length is generally more than enough to make sure it doesn't completely disappear.
