Am nats, and worlds switched to this format a few years ago, they give you a huge players pack , and give out trophies to the top 10 or so in each division, it's not about the players, it's how they make money,

I found this article from a couple years ago. They want to make disc golf more professional. Amateurs are supposed to get other things in place of the non cash prizes. Like bigger player packs, pro clinics and/or player party. That's what I got out of it anyway. Here's the link.. https://dbfreediscgolf.wordpress.com/2013/04/11/true-amateur-initiative/

I believe the cost of the player pack and AM "payouts" is built into the reg.fee. By eliminating the discussion about the retail value of the pack/payout, versus the actual cost of those materials, amateurs are better able to make a value judgement about the quality of each tournament. Then they can go pick what they want in plastic etc. at retail prices.

This is not just a Michigan thing. Many of the big events have adopted to the True Amateur format. There are many good reason for doing this. It does take a lot of coordiantion on out part but in the end, the benefts outweigh the negatives. For me, and I am basing this on having run many events, the biggest complaint about an event is the end where payouts drag on way too long. There are guidelines on how we are supposed to award trophies as well as other details on the True Amateur format. They can be found here if you would like to read on them: http://www.pdga.com/files/pdga_true_amateur_event_guidelines.pdf

To All who think this is a money making scam please think about this. We pay Addison and Stony $1500 alone in pavilion rentals. We pay $2000 added cash to the Open field. We pay $3 per player (144 players) for both courses at Stony x 2 days at a minumum of $150. So when the Pros only had 40 some players last year, we still had to pay the $150 minimum. We pay $5 per person to the PDGA for an A Tier. From where I sit, it is easy to sling cheap shots from the cheap seats but as a TD, sometimes the view is not worth the climb when it goes unappreciated.

Making a meaningful contribution to the sport and their community is the first and controlling character of the TDs I have encountered. The move to True Amateur events solves my long standing doubts regarding the cost (fee) component and the benefit (plastic) component. I prefer to keep my tournament venue decisions separate from my disc selection decisions.

Standing in line to get cashed out has always been a long standing complaint by many players, myself included. We try not to hand players plastic and even though the line my be longer to get through, I would rather have a nice assortment for you to look through when completing your players package rather than simply handing you a nice collection of 'stuff" and have you walk away excited/disappointed when you finally look through it all.

I throw discraft and have always found at Mi State Champs discs worthy of going right into my bag. My support of the True Amateur approach is partly based on the theory that it is always better to shop for discs in the broadest retail market and, shop for tournaments based only on the playing experience they offer. Player packs can sweeten things, as I understand that the materials are expensed separately from the registration fees.

Personally, I would rather have a killer player pack as opposed to big payouts to the Am Divisions. I go to tournaments to have fun and see friends that I normally only see at these tournaments. If payouts are that important to you, then move up to the Pro Divisions.

Don Cantwell, did you see what we provided the players last year in the Great Lakes Open players pack? There are great tournaments every year that sell out in hours like Bowling Green, The Memorial, etc, and they have all gone to trophy only. Please understand that Trophy Only does not just provide a trophy for the 1st place winner of each division. If you are going to post a question like this, you need to understand what the guidelines are from the PDGA. You can read about them here: http://www.pdga.com/files/pdga_true_amateur_event_guidelines.pdf

One of the state premier events and TD. You enter a tournament for the entertainment value, much like nearly every other amateur sport around. The entry fee goes for overhead to present the event and give out a few medals or trophies. I have participated in no other AM sport that even provided player packs, let alone extensive payouts to AM winners. The bottom line is very simple, if not pleased with the way any tournament is run, don't enter. If payouts are your motivation, Pro divisions are designed for just that. I am always excited to play in this event.

While the pros and cons on this subject can be played back and forth all day long. To me while reading the "PDGA True Amateur Events" it comes down to the fact that this even will only be giving trouphys to more than likely 1st and 2nd place as the cap for this event is 244 and only 144 AM's . it also suggests that the entry fee be 60 dollars where as this is 20 dollars higher. unless this players pack is like the GBO or Ledgestone players pack I dont see a reason for me to cough up the large event fee to go to an event where I am needing to get first or second place to get some sort of prize.

Then don't play it. Seems pretty simple to me. If you don't like the setup of the tournament then don't play it. There are plenty of others out there that fit your needs. It is not necessary to criticize or complain that a certain tournament doesn't do what you want it to do. Go play somewhere else. I highly doubt anyone will be offended if you don't want to play this tournament. Have a nice day and good luck wherever you decide to play.
