The sad rumors many people have been hearing are very true. After a long life on 17 Mile Road beginning in 1936 Sunnybrook will be closing their doors forever. This has been a very difficult decision for Randy and his wife to make but it has been made. By the end of September, the new owners will take over the property and begin developing it for industrial use. Randy has contacted his extended Sunnybrook family, all who work there and all who run either golf or bowling leagues and disc golf events so we all can begin focusing on the what next. While we are all is shock about this, I have to congratulate Randy and his family on their new-found future. No more 4:00 am alarm clocks so he can rush to the course to mow the greens or get to the bowling alley so he can oil the lanes.
We began running tournaments here and we either brought our own baskets or Discraft donated them. Travel to get the donated baskets, assembly lines in the cart garage, waiting for the frost to leave the grass in the morning so we could install them, and then the opposite to take the course down all were baby steps along the way in proving to Randy that we would support a course at his establishment. A solid business plan presented to him allowed him to make a very fast decision that it was time to invest in a permanent course. Little time was wasted and the course was installed after many suggestions by more than a few to get us to the final course design. Almost all of our events here were sell outs. Thank you all for helping make our presence felt in an area that was not ready for us. I cannot thank all of those enough who have helped me bring disc golf to Sunnybrook. Thank you! It has been my pleasure. Again, while this is sad news, as the old saying goes, "When one door closes, another opens." I hope to see you on the other side! Maybe we will move the Turkey Open to a new venue. Thoughts?
