DGLA: Michigan Cooperative Point Series - Summer 2014 *** 5th Annual ***   May 2, 2014 at 9:31pm

DGLA MiCPS-S: Updates, Stats and News..... 5/02/2014

So Spring is finally starting to take shape and the Michigan Cooperative Point Series Summer 2014 season is starting to heat up as well. Just a few weeks in and the leaderboard is already highlighting some of the great state talent. We'll take a peek at the leaderboard to check out what's Hot and Who is shooting it. I also like to see who the disc golf gypsies are? You know those players that are always going some place new to play, they know all the courses and always have stories to tell. Man we are blessed to have so many courses throughout the state with more each year which is also the case with leagues and league types; singles, doubles, putting, bag tags, skins, safari, glow, and point series....Oh do we know how to have fun.....

I know I have posted in almost every message that after May 3rd the MiCPS-Summer locks and no new leagues can be added. But still after May 3rd I know I will get a few message that say "hey can you please add our league to the MiCPS, we have players who are asking about getting points for their rounds?" and it kills me to say SORRY. That is why I try so hard to avoid having to say that - so I ask you to bare with me. It's just one of those rules that helps make this work, and fair to the 456 players who are already playing in the 39 leagues - but we look forward to adding your league next season.....

May 3rd is also the deadline to upgrade to DGLA player level for those who want to get some awards and a shot at a berth to the The Discraft Michigan State Championships. I will be activating the separate DGLA Player level leaderboard after May 3rd. Several players from winter already have their berth and several others will secure their at other events during the season so they will not eligible and the berth awards will go to the top Players who do not already have berths after the summer season is over. If you don't have the $30 for the season than make sure you secure your currently FREE DGLA lifetime membership.

Before I start to highlight leagues and players I have had several questions about "The Berths". So I tell people that the berths are won and are your invitation to compete at The Discraft Michigan State Championships Sat-Sun, August 30-31, in Ludington. The MDGO (Michigan Disc Golf Organization) hosts this B-tier,PDGA sanctioned singles tournament for all levels of players. The MDGO help organize tournaments throughout Michigan, provide fund raising opportunities for clubs and events and support new courses throughout the state in many ways. Coordinating the years tournaments to avoid conflicts is a daunting task but the results we all get to enjoy and the celebration in early Fall, of the season is always an amazing weekend of disc golf in Ludington, at some of the states great courses to be enjoyed with an amazing group of people. The Berth also comes with a Discraft Michigan State Championships player package - super color event discs. It normally is one of four event discs that make a set and are limited edition event discs with matching minis. The other three discs you can get at the event if you want the whole set. Also included is a useful MDGO bottle opener and a variety of Discraft hats with some Buzz caps in the mix this year. Also very useful during the rounds is one of the best water bottles I've used the Discraft water bottle looks sharp too, and especially useful while competing in those three Michigan Championship rounds in Ludington. Now there are only 480 berths awarded at Tournaments and Leagues from January until early August and then there is one last chance to qualify for the State Championships - amazingly enough called the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) the Friday before the Discraft Michigan State Championships, Friday August 29. All levels of players can compete to get in to the Championship if you did not earn a berth but spots are limited and if you want to ensure you get into a specific division you want to register as early as possible. With a lower number of women and youths it is easier for these divisions than some of the others. So there is no reason to not start planning your Championship adventure now because it will be here before you know it and things get booked up as there is a lot going on around Ludington during this holiday weekend especially if you like the outdoors. Now there are more details so I point them to Disc Golf Scene as a starting point:

The Discraft Michigan State Championships

Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ)
http://www.discgolfscene.com/tournaments/Last_Chance_Qualifier_LCQ_2014

and those who are running events/clubs in Michigan who are not familiar with MDGO I point out they are on Disc Golf Scene but also they have a website http://mdgo.org/ and a Yahoo group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MDGO_Organizers/ to help with more information - You can even get $5 off your PDGA membership by checking out their website before you register with the PDGA.

OK now most that venture into my kind a long winded posts know I like to dig into the stats and look for trends - now that a bunch of the administrative things are done I can devote a little effort to that here and in future posts. Did I mention the MiCPS locks on May 3rd....

OK so I like to start with the weekly leaderboards to see who is playing the most and who is collecting the most points. These leaderboards have a few surprises from time to time but are a good indicator of who the top performers are even if they can not continue for the whole season.

The most rounds played in a week for April were as it often is, 1 samuel Samsquanch smith with 5 the week of April 13-19. Sam is normally up there in rounds week after week and for all the weeks of April he is near the top with a min of 3 rounds. The list is getting to long at three rounds so here are the top players per week above three:

1 Geoff Bennett 4
1 samuel Samsquanch smith 4

1 samuel Samsquanch smith 5
2 Jay B INSANITY DGC 4

1 samuel Samsquanch smith 5
2 Jay B INSANITY DGC 4

Now the more you play the better your odds are that your point total will climb faster since you have the opportunity to maximize your two best rounds for the week. But what are the biggest point combinations achieved each week?

Well the most points amassed by a player in a given week in April was 112 pts -Wow. Now that was actually just two rounds, of course it helps if each of those rounds has an Ace to collect 25 extra points per Ace. Nicely done Jay B INSANITY DGC. Geoff Bennett best week was 107pts with one Ace. Taggart Anderson collected 102pts with just two rounds - a 1st place finish and a 7th place finish. Well played guys.

Top three week pts overall for April

1 Jay B INSANITY DGC 112
1 Geoff Bennett 107
2 Taggart Anderson 102

Top point totals by week:

1 Jay B INSANITY DGC 112
2 Taggart Anderson 80
3 Geoff Bennett 78

1 Geoff Bennett 107
2 Taggart Anderson 102
3 Joe 'Dirt' LaPerna 88
4 Samantha Socia 86

1 Ted Stoebling 81
2 2 J 76
2 brett hagen 76

1 Ryan Herzog 80
2 2 J 77
3 Jay B INSANITY DGC 72

The April monthly leaderboard currently only has three weeks since the last week is split between April and May so with just three of the April weeks the most league wins belongs to mark ellis with 4 - 3 in a row at Chill Son Dubs, Brighton Recreation Area and 1 at Ypsi Dubs 2014 Summer League -={Church}=- Suuuuundays, Rolling Hills County Park. Dave Lassen was right behind him with 3 back to back at Night Moose Spring/Summer 2014, Willow Metropark.

Wins
1 mark ellis 4
2 Dave Lassen 3
3 Geoff Bennett 2
3 Paul Tribble 2
3 Ryan Anderson 2
3 Chris Wojciechowski 2
3 mark manard 2
3 Marc Sobota 2
3 Eirik Kauserud 2
3 Ted Stoebling 2
3 Scott Sprow 2
3 "J Bluntz" Quiton 2
3 Jay B INSANITY DGC 2
3 John "Johnny Mac" McClenahan 2

I love to see players get out to several different leagues. This helps spread the good ideas and make the rounds more fun for everyone. I just dream of being able to get out that much so I live my disc golf dream vicariously through these Disc Golf Gypsies. samuel Samsquanch smith & Sam Hardesty managed to get to 5 different leagues in these three weeks. They hit several of the same leagues but there were a couple differences. Man are we lucky with the number of leagues throughout the week in so many areas.

3 Paul Tribble 4
3 Bill Hall 4
3 Joshua Seaver 4
3 mark manard 4
3 Mike Stratford 4
3 Jerry "Chilly" Chilson 4
3 Jason Kirkaldy 4
3 Nate Wheeling 4
3 Jay B INSANITY DGC 4
3 Matt "The Spider" Swider 4
3 Ben Calhoun 4

Not everyone can play 3-5 times a week and that is why we try and balance things out by keeping just the two best rounds per week but when you can, not only should your game improve but the point total should be maximized each week. So watch for the Samsquanch lurking in the wood near you and taking home all those points with 14 rounds in three weeks this guy is a playing beast.

Rounds
1 samuel Samsquanch smith 14
2 Geoff Bennett 11
2 Jay B INSANITY DGC 11
4 Taggart Anderson 9
5 Kyle Decaussin 8
6 Ben Calhoun 7
6 Jake Pardo 7
6 Phil "Puttimus Prime" Common 7
6 Jason Kirkaldy 7
6 Foz Miller 7
6 Sam Hardesty 7
6 Mike Stratford 7
6 Nate Wheeling

Now the ultimate focus of the Point Series is Points and for these three weeks of April, 255 points was the highest accrual achieved and that was by Geoff Bennett. Followed closely by Taggart Anderson with 244.

Points
1 Geoff Bennett 255
2 Taggart Anderson 244
3 John "Johnny Mac" McClenahan 188
3 Jay B INSANITY DGC 188
5 Ted Stoebling 157
6 Ryan Herzog 155
7 Ben Calhoun 154
8 2 J 153
9 brett hagen 152
10 Christian Sersha 150

So what did all that do to the overall standing to date?

I think 6th - 1st will not be a big surprise given the recent weekly and monthly stats review. The Samsquanch shares 6th place with Ben Calhoun but with a big difference in the number of rounds each has played. 2 J own 5th by 3 pts over them but he managed to do this in the least number of rounds - only 5 and yes he took 1st twice but the other three were high point total from a large league - 2014 Friday Night Discin @ Stony (DGLA Summer). Just a small margin above climbing up to 4th for John "Johnny Mac" McClenahan with overall a low round count but he made them all count, with an average of 27pts per round with the best round worth 54 points for the 1st place at Metro Detroit Disc Golf League 2014, Firefighters Park. Our Winter MiCPS champion still playing at the top of the Summer leaderboard currently in third overall with 14 rounds and a big jump up to 300 pts - Jay B INSANITY DGC. Loving those Aces. Only 12 rounds but an extra 24 points for 324 total for Taggart Anderson is well positioned in second, only 9 points out of first. With 14 rounds, one ACE, Geoff Bennett currently commands the top spot on the leaderboard. Congrats to all the top leaderboard spot owners and a special highlight at spot 21. Samantha Socia 154pts in 5 rounds, she achieved 86 points in one week and is representing in grand style for the ladies - Well played and congrats on your berth for the 2014 PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships Sat-Sat, July 19-26, 2014 at Kaposia Park in South St. Paul, Minnesota - Rock On and represent Michigan Samantha - Whoot Whoot!
