The poker chip method: (random draw)
Player shows up, pays the money to get into league. He picks a poker chip out of the bag. There are 52 chips labeled #1-#50 (I used a sharpie) plus two "u-pick" chips. After he draws the chip it does not go back into the bag, it stays out. Next players steps up and does the same thing, etc..
Write down the players name next to the number he draws on the league signup sheet.
This is a sheet with 50 blank spaces for names. We do a two column sheet. #1-#25 is column 1 then #26-#50 is column 2. The U-pick spots are on the bottom. I also have a little spot for ace pool and ctp options (since they are optional) next to each name.
After everyone has a number then you ask (if there is a u-pick) who he picks. The u-pick person can pick any player at the league. If there are two u-picks drawn then they are automatically partners.
Count the number of players. If it's odd then you do the cali flip. (u-pick trumps cali). After cali flip then you create teams. We do it by who you are next to on the list. SO if I drew #3 and Bob drew #7 (and no one drew 4-5-6) we would be partners. We would play in a group with the next two people on the list (although sometimes we allow pick your own group).
This is nice because it is completely random and it can easily handle the situation where a new player shows up right when everyone is ready to go out and start playing. New player simply picks a chip. Groups could reshuffle but you are not starting over.
This is the method used at The Grange glow league, as experienced first hand by myself and Fortunato this summer. They actually do a staggered start based on the chip order, so you know how long you have to drink and hang out and get warmed up, etc. based on your number.
Pro/AM variation: We do two separate sheets for pro/am. The pros get paired up with the lowest number ams in the same order they draw. lowest number pro with lowest number am, etc. until there are no pros left them the ams get partnered up together.
