John, I did some internet research to see how other sports do leagues and/or tournaments and I think I found one that might work good for this. I got it from the American Cornhole Association (
www.americancornhole.org), in their "traditional" league format they play 1 match = 3 games or best of 3. I've copied some text from their rules, as always this can be tweaked as needed......
-----------------------------------------------------------------
7.3 Cornhole “TRADITIONAL 21†LEAGUE FORMAT (Recommended)
(applies to Doubles and Singles)
• Play one match per team or player in an outing
• 1 match = 3 games
• Games are scored with Traditional 21 scoring (or 13 like we did)
• Winner of best of three games wins the match
• 1 league point is given for:
– Each game won within a match
– Winning a match
An example
Game 1: Bailey Geers 21 – Max Charles 19 (one point BG)
Game 2: Bailey Geers 19 – Max Charles 21 (one point MC)
Game 3: Bailey Geers 21 – Max Charles 13 (one point BG)
Match winner Bailey Geers (one point BG)
Bailey’s league points: 3 (2 for games; 1 for match)
Max’s league points: 1 (1 for game)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Now my opinions - Random draw works well for setting up the doubles team. A predetermined bracket could be set up to determine team vs team (Ace red vs 8 black…etc). With each Match possibly playing 3 games we could set up so that every team play 3 Match’s per week. Weekly winners could be determined by weekly league points and if a tie-breaker is needed a single game could be played. Or another option would be to bracket weekly having a winners and losers bracket with a two game knockout, with this we would only be able to play games and not matches, depending on turnout and time.
I was also thinking that since they have the overhead projector in the room we might be able to hook up a computer to it and have all the teams, games, points, brackets…etc showing up on the big screen.
Just my thoughts.
