The conventional thinking when I was starting out 20 years ago was that the "more competitive" divisions were enticed by the lure of a bigger prize pool, having more skin in the game so to speak. It's kind of just held over, though to be honest I haven't really analyzed if that thought process is still prevalent amongst current tournament players.
