Some player highlights
Dan (me, I, this guy) took 1st place. Admittedly it's more of an attendance award of sorts and I've won 5 of the last 6 winter series. DANG YOU JOHN DEL REAL (2023 winter series 18). For this series my best round was the 8th week for our first 20 hole 2XL at the goon. I also snagged the only ace of the series that same day on hole 5 to the yellow basket. Unofficially rated 1017 which was the 2nd highest rated round for a player this series. Allen Black's 1019 was more impressive at Kincaid tho. I guess I'll sink down in the ratings and points standings as we put Westchester to bed for the summer.
Co-Director James Robinson arguably had the best series with the higher rating overall. He shot 952 for the series which is 24 points higher than his rating. One may be tempted to wonder if he would have taken first place if he hadn't missed week 5? James got paid out more than any player despite missing a round. Black barely came in second. So again, best rating, most money awarded... ya'll can decide. His best rounds were a 984 week 8 performance at the 2XL goon, and a 982 week 3 which was our first Kincaid round of 2025.
Morgan turned out a solid performance this winter with a 931 rated series, 7 points above his rating. He saved his best for last scoring his highest rated rounds to close out the series in week 9 (Kincaid Blues) 959 rated, and week 10 (goon 2nd 2XL) 948 rated. Those two rounds kept him atop the leaderboard in 3rd place. He also impressively shot 948 rated week 1 at the goon during that crazy icy/windy round. Best of all I was able to witness his miracle birdie on the final hole of the season. Week 10 at the goon. Hole 20 which was 3s teepad to the temporary basket location deeper in the woods. Morgan throws a forehand from the tee probably thinking it'll finish right and give him a open approach to the basket. However, being the final hole of the series, and possibly knowing in the back of his mind that Scott is shooting hot hot hot and charging up the series standings, Morgan puts a lil too much oomph on his drive and it ends up flipping flat and drifting left! Oh no the trees! But it holds some of its stability and doesn't flip all the way over and finds itself landing just past the red basket location. What now? He's pinched off. Everyone is watching. Sweating, nervous, old. Morgan stands alone with no direct path to the basket. He sees something, pauses to double check, grins, grabs his go-to plastic, clutches up and throws a forehand roller! Because of course who wouldn't think that's a great option in the snow and woods. And off it goes, under the spruce branches, between birch trunks, over the rotted logs and branches, and somehow nestling around circles edge. Yea, no brainer. So after all that, easy money. He steps up and drains the putt for birdie and third place overall for the series beating Scott by 2.5 points.
Scott get honorable mention as he only played 7 rounds and didn't get the benefit of dropping any bad weeks. He shot a 991 week 9 on the blueish Kincaid layout and a 984 final week 10 which catapulted him just shy of podium glory. That final week he birdied 9 holes (11-19) in a row! When the guy is on, he's on fire. Thanks for coming out Capt Groves.
That concludes the winter series! Mini's will be awarded in few weeks! Next series will likely start Tuesday 4/29/25 at Kincaid as we get amped up for Kincaid Kickoff. Weeks will alternate mostly between Kincaid and Peters Creek, however we will toss in a Girdwood round when needed for those tourney weeks. MSDGA now has Monday leagues going so we'll keep our leagues well away from their hood so we don't get any MSDGA league cooties. And who knows, maybe we'll get Davis Park back from the residents there someday and we can see what's left of our other woods course. Let's go tourney season 2025!
