Hi Jon! Divisions are for different skilled players. Sanctioned or not, many tournaments have different divisions. MPO costs more because then the payouts are more. The more confident you are as a player, the more players you think you can beat, the more winnings you should earn. Likewise, divisions should be available so newer players don’t get “hustled” out of their fee and still have a chance to win as they build their skills to compete in higher divisions. Also, New Yak City started as a fundraising tournament to actual gain the funds to install Hawthorne. There was no Hawthorne the first year. Just a bunch of dudes and dudettes with an idea. It’s a unique tournament with a unique dynamic that got too complicated the one year it was sanctioned. So in the spirit of its grassroots start, we’d like to keep it unsanctioned. If you haven’t played, it’s a different feel and a lot of fun. I hope to see ya out there!
