I'm a guardsman along with another member of my team, plus we have a reserve member and an active duty member; You can get the time off for the event if you use the right words to explain what the event does and is for. My biggest selling point to my leadership was point out that it is an all military and veteran event, the charities it supports, (I work at JFHQ in my state) and the potential to send some recruiters and/or PA out to the event to improve our accessions and for Public Affairs to show the US NG what we're doing. Lots of ways to "spin" it, but it's all factual, it's just the delivery...and of course your Units OPS Tempo. Sorry for the long "I got leave too bad you didn't" reply, not intended to rub it in anyone's face or try to tell anyone "how" to talk to their leadership to request the time off. Every unit is unique as well as every supervisor/Shirt/Commander, so I get it.
