It was a hot, 6 hr round of 27 holes on Saturday. The heat kicked my butt. Seriously contemplated not playing Sunday even though I had the lead. It just felt borderline unsafe (for me, on that particular day. Somedays you can handle it, other times it handles you). Put some thought into it Saturday evening as I recovered at home, and came up with a better game plan. Copious amount of hydration all morning before our 12:30 tee time. Broad rim hat to help shield my face and neck from the sun. Switched from the Grip bag to the Zuca, keeping it off my back, removing the lifting/lowering exertion, and letting me bring a ton of water and chilled gatorade. So much water I could spare some for cooling my head. This all helped. I felt healthier, stronger, and most importantly, my head wasn’t foggy. Limited the penalties to 3, shot an -11. Even birdied the last three holes, the last of which was a long water carry. Just watch out my friends. I live in a hot area. I suffer sometimes from the “manly man” cliche, where I believe from force of will I can just handle physical adversity. Heat stroke can sneak up on you. Don’t let it.
