Well, that’s a wrap. Congrats to Matt who is our 2023 League Champion!!! He threw the gauntlet down early and was an absolute beast all season. Congrats also to Josh and Erik who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. There was a lot of competition this season and most rounds were decided by mere strokes, but these three competitors were by far the most consistent all year. Great job, fellas!!

Thanks for a wonderful season, everyone!! Special thanks to all of you who played 12+ rounds this year. It was great to see so many new players come out and keep coming back. I hope to see you all on Oct 29. Remember to let us know if you’re coming so we can make a plan for food.

Continued Policies for Next Year

1. We will continue to use the current flex start format where you have a week to get your round in. If you are having scheduling conflicts, just reach out to me and ask for an extension. It’s likely no big deal for me to grant you extra time.

2. We will continue to play 12 courses twice to determine course champions. I will likely keep all of the same courses for next year but look for substitutes for Starr-Jaycee and Grizzly Oaks.

3. Because of the flex scheduling format, we still will not be able to run an ace pool or make weekly payouts. That type of thing is exclusive to an in-person league.

4. This will remain a very chill league with friendly competition and players who are highly supportive of one another. There are plenty of alternative cut-throat options in our area if that is your scene. I encourage you to seek that out if that’s your preference.

Notes on Divisions:
Like in the PDGA, you would need at least 3 players to field a division. If you cannot field a division, you will have to play the division above you. You will not be forced to play in your handicap division. You will have the option to play above your allotted division but never below for the sake of fairness. A running handicap will continue to be calculated for each player’s round to help curb sandbagging. Players may be moved up a division at the commissioner’s discretion.

2. Number of Rounds Going Towards End-of-Season Championship:
We will continue playing 12 courses twice to determine course champions. However, the end-of-season championship for each division will be determined by each player’s best score at each course. Players who play both rounds can compete for course championships and have the advantage of improving on their first rounds. Players who have to miss certain rounds due to vacations, family obligations, etc. will only have to play 12/24 rounds (each course once) to compete for the end-of-season championship for their division.

Survey responses: There were 13 survey responses. 25 people played at least a handful of rounds with us this season. 16 players played at least half of the rounds. 13/25 = 52% of people who responded likely played at least 6 rounds.

Handicaps: 5/13 (38%) would like to switch to natural scoring with divisions, 62% would like to keep handicap scoring. The most common complaint with handicap scoring was that it wasn’t fair for a better score to lose to a higher score. Handicaps were introduced a year ago to allow for lesser-skilled players to still be able to compete.

Course Championships: 10/13 (77%) people would like to continue competing towards course championships, 1/13 ( 8%) did not like playing a course twice to determine a champion, and 2/13 (15%) did not care one way or the other.

Course Selection: 9/13 (69%) of people were fine with the course selection, 3/13 (23%) objected to Starr-Jaycee, and 1/13 (8%) objected to Grizzly Oaks being selected for league play.

Flex Starts: 12/13 (92%) people elected to keep the current flex start format, 1/13 (8%) indicated a preference of switching to an in-person league that meets at the same time and same day every week.

Season Length: 10/13 (77%) people thought the amount of rounds was perfect, 2/13 (15%) people wished we had played more rounds, and 1/13 ( 8%) felt the season had too many rounds.

Off-Season Doubles Play: 12/13 (92%) people expressed an interest in meeting in person to play some doubles throughout the off-season (late Oct-April). 1/13 (8%) is not interested.

End-of-Year-Celebration: 100% of respondents expressed interest in attending an end-of-season celebration. Please find the post labeled “Save the Date!” and indicate your intentions so we can get a headcount for food.

Save the date! I’d like to do an end-of-season get together on Sunday, October 29 at 10 a.m. at Independence Lake County Park in Whitmore Lake. My plan is to get a round in, break for some food, acknowledge some players and season highlights, and then either play the other course or send people on their way. One quick note about handicaps…up until this point, they’ve mostly been calculated using an arbitrary number provided by DG Course Review based on how they think a 1000-rated player would perform on the course. In an effort to be as accurate as possible, I will be abandoning the DG Course Review scores from my calculations and instead use the top 25% of UDisc scores for each course and layout instead. There’s no need to use an arbitrary number when UDisc maintains an active all-time leaderboard for every course in its registry. I suspect that most people’s handicaps will increase as a result, so don’t be alarmed if that’s the case..
