League Director commentary on Week 1
Highlight of the night was the extreme cold. Us Wisconsin disc golfers are quite used to playing in below freezing temps, but not so much when its a week before spring, so the bitter cold temps during league caught us all off guard. Fortunately, attendance was low and we could expedite play to finish before it got too dark on us.
Because I'm a new LD and this is a fairly unique way of playing, I'm compelled to explain scoring items in a wee bit more detail, especially as it relates to payouts and top place finishes.
If looking at Leaderboard for Thursday, Mar. 15th, in Pro division, you'll see Kevin at -6 for the night to Brad's -2. And yet, you'll also see Brad gets the $6 payout. Here's why. Kevin beat Brad in Round 1, so Kevin gets 2 points to Brad's 1 point. Brad beat Kevin in Round 2. Points double in Round 2. Brad gets 4 points to Kevin's 2 points for that round. Add those totals together and Brad has 5 points for the night, while Kevin has 4.
Similarly in Am division, Josh (myself) and Laura were the top 2 contenders. Laura beat Josh in Round 1, she got 3 points to Josh's 2 points. In Round 2, Josh beat Laura (who took 2nd). Josh gets 6 points to Laura's 4 points. So total points among those top 2 was Josh at 8, Laura at 7. While they tied in overall score for the night, Josh wins the weekly payout.
Doubling the points in 2nd round was decision I made before the league began because a) it will help keep people around the entire night and b) because some portion of that 2nd round is played in the dark (so more challenging).
Besides the "15" side pool each league night, we also do a "best round" side pool. In week 1, Brad and Kevin both shot a round of -5, and due to the extreme cold and hurry to get out, Brad conceded that payout to Kevin. Going forward, I'm thinking I'll adjust that based on how well each player does in their other round as clearly Kevin shot better overall than Brad, and so I think Kevin winning that side pool makes most sense. Possibly, I'll just change that side pool to best overall score for the night, but for now I'm sticking to "best single round" for the side pool.
The "15" side pool had no winner in week 1. The pros found that too challenging, but acknowledged the cold and moderately strong winds were a factor. In my practice rounds, I've had 5 makes myself and I'm an Am. Making 15 is very challenging, but I think it's possible. We shall see!
