Tonight was the ace pool playoff round for the Bryan doubles league, and some familiar faces returned to throw for dough after some time away. Coming into the evening, the pool money stood at $140, and two more players bought in prior to the round to bring it to $160. This proved to be quite fortunate. Weather conditions the last few days allowed much of the course to dry considerably except for the swamp around baskets one and eight. Hopefully, this trend continues so we can enjoy our rounds more as the year wears forward.

Getting to the scores, Brian Taylor and Larry Smith started off the round hot, but cardmates John Broering and Scott McCullough pulled even with them by the end. The pairs posted matching scores of 43, which caused a four-way split of the $160 pool. Louis Salinas and Ben Wonders carded a 48 for third. James Zimmerman and Jacobie Bagley tied with Bret Stopher and John Bingham at 50. Rounding it out were John Ryan and Brian Barclay at 51.

I cannot express enough how much everyone's participation in this adventure has meant to me. I was sincerely concerned that the idea would flop due to lack of interest or poor conditions, but those fears proved to be unfounded. Even on days when it was smarter to stay home, enough players showed up to make a round of it. Thank you all so much for caring to play.

This was the last scheduled round of cash doubles for the season. My original plan was to continue meeting on Tuesday evenings, with no player fee, and draw for formats. We can discuss this in the coming days. The idea behind drawing formats is to spice up the round from week to week. I like playing doubles as much as the next guy, but after 16 weeks, I'm ready for something different.

The July 21 round of the Bryan doubles league will be played under the ace pool playoff rules which can be found at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-MO1WKNE21tUXhUbjlrbG5lU3c/view?usp=sharing. We will draw for partners at 6:15 PM.

Players who have paid into the ace pool have already paid the fee for this round and do not need to bring any additional money with them on July 21. Players who have not paid into the ace pool but want to play this round will pay a $10 fee to do so. The round will be played much the same as we have been playing, with A and B tier players pairing up.

Noteable exceptions to the normal rules are:
1. This is a winners-take-all round. The only paying place will be first. There will be no playoff in the event of a tie. The prize money will be divided evenly among any teams tied for first place.
2. An ace carded during this round will be scored as a 1 on the scorecard, but no additional prize will be awarded for the shot.
3. If there is an odd number of players, an A-Tier player will be alone and get two tee shots and one additional shot per hole. No extra fee will be required for this player.

The evening breeze was strong at times tonight, and brief sprinkles were seen as round fifteen of the Bryan doubles league went off with the players making their last stabs at the ace pool money before next week's winners-take-all playoff. James Zimmerman joined in for his first time with the doubles league and played A-Tier to establish himself in the statistics.

The round was carried by Bret Stopher and Brian Taylor, carding a 43 to take home the $30 top prize. Larry Smith and James Zimmerman were second at 45 for $10 in prize money. Scott McCullough and Ben Wonders were third at 48, and Nathan Opdycke and Nick Witter came in fourth at 49.

Scott McCullough kicked in for the ace pool tonight, which brings the current total to $140. Nick Witter had an ace run at hole 5, but his disc dipped and bounced off the basket, so the ace pool survived the first fifteen rounds and will be won by a team next week in a special playoff round. The rules for next week's round were posted here a week or so ago, so look for them and familiarize yourself with them if you are planning to attend. There will be another post forthcoming concerning next week, so check back.

Is anyone else curious about what it might be like to play on a firm, dry surface again? After one of the rainiest single days in recent memory on Saturday, the Recreation Park DGC was spongy, to put it mildly, for the June 30 round of the Flyerz doubles league. Eight players squished their way through the course tonight, braving the swampy conditions. Scott McCullough was able to participate this evening thanks to a fortunately-timed break in his work schedule and played in the A-tier for his first round in the league.

Scott and Nathan Opdycke drew each other as partners and turned in a 45 for the round to take home $30 for their finish. John Ryan and Ben Wonders finished one shot behind at 46 for second and $10. Brian Taylor and Nick Witter shot a 48, and Brian Barclay and Larry Smith finished at 50 to round out the field.

The ace pool remains at $120 for the time being. There are three league rounds left, and if nobody gets an ace in the next two, we will play a winners-take-all round for the pool money on July 21.

We will be continuing our Tuesday night shenanigans once the doubles league wraps up. Suggestions for round formats will be written on slips of paper, and we will draw from those to determine what we will do for the evening. Format ideas will be all over the place, so come ready for an adventure. You may end up playing a round completely different from anything you've ever done. The $1 optional Tuesday night ace pool from past leagues will be up for grabs, too. I can't wait.

It's been a long time since one could say this, but the weather was nigh perfect tonight for the June 23 round of the Fountain City Flyerz Tuesday night doubles league. Eight players took to the course, and we were putting today, indeed.

John Broering and Larry Smith carded a 43 for first place and $30 in prize money. Nathan Opdycke and John Ryan took second with a 47, and Alex Czech & Nick Witter and Brian Barclay & Ben Wonders tied for third place at 48 strokes.

Larry Smith bought in to the ace pool, which brings the total for it to $120.

As explained this evening, the final round of the league will be a winners-take-all doubles round for the ace pool money, if it is not claimed in any of the preceding rounds. Those players in the pool as of that day will play for no additional fee. Any other players are welcome, provided they pay a $10 fee.

The rain gave way to pleasant weather for the June 16 round of the Flyerz Doubles League, and eight players showed up to compete on the soggy marshland that is currently the Recreation Park DGC. Larry Smith, a newcomer to the Bryan area, joined in the fun for the first time this year and played in the A tier for the round.

Winning the night with a score of 46 were Nathan Opdycke and Louis Salinas, and they grabbed $30 for their effort. Second were John Ryan and Bret Stopher with a 49 for $10. Tied for third place and the prize of knowing they hadn't wasted a night of their lives on the couch were the teams of Brian Barclay and Larry Smith and Nick Witter and Ben Wonders.

John Ryan entered the ace pool, as well, bringing the total to $110.

Eight players geared up for the June 9 round of the Flyerz Doubles League. The weather was warm and pleasant allowing for some excellent scores.

Nathan Opdycke and Johnathon Ryan were paired together for the round and shot well, recording a 43 to capture first place and take home $30. Brian Barclay and Nick Witter turned in a 44, good for second place and a $10 prize. Other scores were Brian Taylor and Ben Wonders at 46 and John Broering and Bret Stopher at 47.

Nobody finished a hole in one throw, so the ace pool is intact at $100. If nobody takes it before the final league night, we'll play for it then in a winners-take-all round.

For the first week, I'd like to have everyone meet at the course map by hole one at 6:00 to go over the rules and get signed in. We will begin play as close to 6:30 as possible, which will be the goal every week, so late arrivals are heartily encouraged to contact someone (preferably me) to let me know you're on the way. As the season moves on, daylight will be more plentiful, so it won't be such an issue.
